Ex-Franklin student strangled to death
By Jason Anderson
Record Staff Writer
April 19, 2014 - 12:00 AM
One former Franklin High School student is dead and another is locked up in a Seattle jail on suspicion of homicide in
the strangling death of his girlfriend.
According to reports in The Seattle Times, Gabriel Navarro, 20, called 911 at 11:50 a.m. last Saturday and told
dispatchers he had killed his girlfriend inside their apartment in Renton, Wash. The newspaper identified the victim as
20-year-old Allison Leedy, who reportedly ran away with Navarro four days after her 18th birthday but planned to leave
their abusive relationship.
Navarro was charged Wednesday with first-degree murder involving domestic violence in a King County courthouse,
according to jail records. He is being held in lieu of $2 million bail.
Two Franklin teachers who knew Leedy expressed shock and sadness Friday, saying she was a talented young artist who
excelled in the school's International Baccalaureate program.
"I knew her well," Liz James said. "She was very sweet-hearted and soft-spoken. We were all rooting for her to go to art
school. She was just a tremendous talent. You just knew that girl was going places. You could just imagine her in New
York or San Francisco with her own art gallery, being creative and doing amazing things."
Bill James said Leedy was in his English class when she was a sophomore.
"She was a good student, and, like most of our IB students, she was motivated," he said. "She was one of those people
who always had a smile on her face, always seemed happy, was always kind to everyone - just a nice, sweet, innocent,
happy person."
In spring 2012, about two months before she was set to graduate, Leedy dropped out of school and moved to
Washington with Navarro, Bill James said.
Citing court documents, the Times reported that Leedy spent the past four months planning to change jobs, go to school
and leave Navarro, who was aware of her desire to end their relationship.
"After a three-year relationship with the defendant which was marked by manipulation, isolation and psychological
destruction ... Allison Leedy had hope," King County Senior Deputy Prosecutor Adrienne McCroy wrote in the court
documents, according to the Times. "She began making plans with her family to leave the defendant, complete her
GED, go to college, and eventually art school. The defendant was aware of her plans and was determined to prevent
Allison and her family from realizing her dreams."
The Times reported that Navarro text-messaged a number of Leedy's relatives after strangling her to death. He
reportedly sent one message to Leedy's grandfather, writing: "If you are getting this you are responsible for Allison's
death, you turned her against me, you abused her heart by offering her to go to college." Navarro reportedly sent another
message to Leedy's father, writing: "She's dead. I have the last laugh."
A memorial fund has been established to help Leedy's family with burial costs. Anyone wishing to donate can
visit giveforward.com/fundraiser/k1g4/allisonleedyfuneralfund. A memorial site has been set up at
facebook.com/groups/AllisonMemorial.
"I don't know what to say except that everyone's just beyond devastated," Liz James said. "It's beyond words. It's just
awful and such a horrible, horrible loss."

Sensei,
I was accepted to the Naval Postgraduate School and the US Department of Homeland Security Center for Homeland Defense and Security master’s program. It is the nation's premier program for a master's degree in homeland security. It is an 18 month program that combines residency requirements and online learning. It is a program that is nine years old, and I am the second person in my department to be accepted to the program. The degree is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and is awarded by the Naval Postgraduate School. The degree provides leaders with the knowledge and skills to:
Develop strategies, plans and programs to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, and reduce America’s vulnerability to terrorism;
Build the organizational arrangements needed to strengthen homeland security, including local/tribal/state/federal, civil-military and interagency cooperation;
Help mayors, governors, and federal officials improve homeland security preparedness by conducting “real world” actionable policy and strategy development.
The curriculum is structured around the key policy and organizational design problems that future homeland security leaders are likely to confront, and the analytic skills they will need to meet those challenges.
Again, thank you for your guidance and tutelage over the years. The focus and dedication I learned in the dojo has affected my life in ways I cannot enumerate. T Sajor
