Football Round Up

As always the football competitions kicked off the year in great style, all of which were highly competitive.

The Y5 & 6 and Y7 & 8 girls competitions ran alongside each other with 17 teams competing across the competitions, a great platform for girls sport and fantastic to see. In the Shield competitions it was Dr. Thomlinson and Newminster Middle Schools who won the Y5 & 6 and Y7 & 8 competitions respectively. The Cup competitions saw Newminster winning the Y5 & 6 competition and Chantry Middle School winning the Y7 & 8 competition. Both teams will progress to the Level 3 School Games in June.

The Y5 boys competition took place in November with 9 teams from Chantry, Newminster, Ponteland and Dr Thomlinson Middle Schools and Darras Hall and Richard Coates Primary Schools competing for both the Cup and Shield. The standard of play was highly impressive and it was an exciting afternoon of football. In the Cup competition things were very tight at the top of the table and going into the last round of matches any one of 3 teams could take the victory. Richard Coates and Ponteland were both level on points and goal difference which meant it came down to head to head with Richard Coates coming out on top. Good Luck to them at the Level 3 School Games. In the shield competition it was Newminster Middle School who were victorious.

Mulit-Skills Festival

In October Year 2 children from across Morpeth & Ponteland took part in the annual Multi-Skills Festival. The Festivals were spread across 4 events at Chantry Middle School and Ponteland Leisure Centre with over 450 children taking part. Leaders from Chantry, Newminster, Richard Coates and Ponteland Middle Schools helped the children through a carousel of activities working on the ABC’s of PE. Everyone got the chance to practice and improve their Agility, Balance and Co-ordination whilst having lots of fun!

Y5 Festivals

In the first 2 weeks of the term Chantry, Newminster, Richard Coates and Ponteland Middle Schools took part in a team building festival to support and aid the transition into Middle School. Students took part in a range of activities where they had to work together to solve problems and accomplish tasks as a team.

The Y5’s from the Ponteland Partnership Primaries took part in a festival designed to prepare them for PE during Upper Key Stage 2. They took part in activities focused on sport specific skills, fitness, competition and team building with an overriding theme of leadership and working with others.

Tag Rugby

A change in the calendar for this year saw both the Y5 & 6 and Y3 & 4 Tag Rugby competitions take place in October.

In the Y5 & 6 competition teams from all 5 middle schools and Whalton, Belsay and Darras Hall Primary Schools competed for the Cup and Shield. All teams showed some fantastic rugby skills and teamwork. In the Shield competition Ponteland Middle School, Darras Halll Primary and Newminster Middle School were the winners of their pools and in the Cup the results were decided in the final match with Chantry Middle School winning their last game to take the qualifying spot for the Level 3 School Games.

The Y3 & 4 competitions saw teams from 13 First and Primary Schools compete in separate Morpeth & Ponteland competitions. Over in Morpeth All Saints and Morpeth First won their pools in the Shield. In the Cup competition a hard fought final between Abbeyfields and Morpeth First saw the match go to golden try with Morpeth First School clinching victory. In Ponteland the Shield pool winners were Heddon, Ponteland and Darras Hall. The Cup was won by Ponteland Primary who won all their matches. A play off between Ponteland and Morpeth First will take place later in the year to see who will represent our area at the Level 3 School Games.

Creative Festival

Over 300 children from Year 3 took part in the creative festivals in December. Four festivals were split across Morpeth and Ponteland Leisure Centre. The festival is ever popular with children as they get to experience 4 creative activities aiming to try at least one new thing. The children look part in activities including rhythmic gymnastics, group balancing, French skipping, dance and judo. A huge thanks to Molly and Destination Judo for supporting the festivals. All the children had a fantastic time, trying new skills and completing personal challenges, some of which they can take back to school. It was fantastic to see the creativity of the children, especially when thinking of new ways to become active.

Volleyball

Year 8 students from all 5 middle schools took part in the Level 2 Volleyball competition in December.

In the girls tournament 8 teams competed against each other in some highly contested games. After winning all their matches Ponteland Middle School came out on top.

The boys competition was just as intense with 7 teams competing. There was some fantastic team work and set plays on display from all teams but it was Chantry Middle School that claimed the win.

We wish both teams good luck for the Level 3 School Games in June. Thanks to Chantry for hosting the event.

Hockey

The annual Quicksticks Hockey Competition took place in November at Morpeth Hockey Club. The competition is split into Y5 and Y6 competitions with teams competing in both cup and shield competitions. There was some fantastic match play and all teams showed great sportsmanship. In the Y5 cup competition after winning all of their matches Ponteland Middle School were victorious and in the shield competition it was Belsay School who topped the table. Over in the Y6 competition Ponteland Middle School topped the table. Both their Y5 and Y6 teams qualify tor the Level 3 School Games in June.

Leadership

Throughout the term the partnership have had the pleasure of working with some fantastic sports leaders from our High and Middle Schools. Y8 students from Chantry, Newminster, Ponteland and Richard Coates Middle Schools were trained to lead the Multiskills festivals, they were all extremely enthusiastic and were complimented by school staff for their efforts, thanks again to you.

Sports leaders from KEVI and Ponteland High have volunteered at the majority of our Level 2 competitions, they have officiated and lead in a range of sports and enabled the competitions to run smoothly. It has been lovely to see students broadening their

volunteering and leadership experiences. A huge thanks to each and everyone of you for your hard work. We look forward to working with you again in the future.

Sportshall Athletics

The Sportshall Athletics competitions saw Chantry, Newminster, Richard Coates, Ponteland and Dr Thomlinson Middle Schools compete against each other for the title of Morpeth & Ponteland champions. In the morning the Y7 & 8’s competed in seperate competitions for boys and girls. There was some fantastic athletic talent on display and the competition was intense. Newminster Middle School was incredibly successful, winning the Year 7 Girls and Boys competitions and were joint winners with Ponteland Middle School in the Year 8 Girls competition. Ponteland Middle School also took the victory in the Y8 Boys competition. The afternoon saw the turn of the Y5 and 6 mixed team, where the competition was just as intense and some incredibly quick athletes particularly in the Over/Under Relay. The Y5 & 6 crown went to Ponteland Middle School winning by 34 points. A huge thank you to Northumberland Athletics Network for supporting and helping with the events.

Rowing

The Level 3 Indoor Rowing competition took place in December which saw individuals from Y7-Y13 competing against students from other areas within the county. As always it was a fiercely competitive event with some quick times. Congratulations to all the rowers from Morpeth & Ponteland that took part.

Handball

Y8 boys from Richard Coates, Dr Thomlinson, Ponteland and Newminster Middle Schools took part in the Handball competition in November. The games were intense and fast paced with goals galore. The overall winners were Ponteland Middle School, congratulations to you and a huge well done to all participants.
