  • LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORMy heartfelt thanks to each one of you, our wonderful nonprofit cinema members, supporters, and friends. In 2018 we had the opportunity to purchase our building and were able to do so with incredible community generosity and support!

A generous bequest from the estate of Christine Pavlak provided the foundation of our capital campaign. Christine was a passionate lover of film and one of Ciné’s very first members. Her friendship and presence at the theater is deeply missed. We were also very fortunate to receive an anonymous gift in 2017 that jumpstarted our fundraising.

Long-term Ciné members and supporters Kathy Prescott and Grady Thrasher helped us formally kick off our Let’s Buy Ciné campaign in April 2017 with a benefit premiere screening of their newest film ATHENS IN OUR LIFETIME. The event allowed us to make our first public fundraising pitch to a packed house of appreciative community members.

Deeds Publishing donated the production of a campaign video promoting matching challenges that brought in support from the Athens community and from across the country (including from the family of independent art house theaters). Thank you!

Other fundraising events that helped us in 2018 include:

    • The “Take Your Seat at Ciné” campaign

    • Fundraisers at board members’ homes

    • “From Broadway To Hollywood,” at The Foundry, produced by Pat Priest and stage managed by Leara Rhodes, featuring Athens musicians performing songs from the screen

    • “Stars in Their Eyes,” at the Seney-Stovall Chapel, produced by Lorraine Thompson, showcasing Athens’ gifted young performers

    • A spectacular Turkish rug sale

In 2018, we secured a $2 million mortgage from the local Athens First American Bank & Trust with the help of a $250,000 low-interest loan from Georgia Cities Foundation as part of the down payment. Our thanks as well to the Athens Downtown Development Authority who approved the submission.

Ciné’s immediate focus and goal is now to achieve operational stability and to pay down our new mortgage. This means increasing our income. We need to expand our member base, the heart and soul of Ciné; successfully apply for grants; and grow our programmatic partnerships and signature film festivals such as HEAR (Holistic Health + Empathy + Accessibility + Recovery), our new, upcoming film series in partnership with Nuci’s Space and Family Counseling Service, Inc. And of course, we look forward to our 2019 annual fundraising campaign.

Thanks to the AFAI Board of Directors for your immense effort. Thanks to the wonderful Ciné staff for all your great work, and for the warm and welcoming atmosphere you create for all of Ciné’s patrons. I am very honored to be at the helm of this treasured community institution. I can’t thank you all enough for your continued support.

    With best wishes,
