December 18, 2017

Dear Together in Mission Friends,

2017 has been an incredible year.

Our Together in Mission 2017 “Be the Light of Christ” campaign is drawing to a close and we are very happy to share that ALL of your hard work has paid off. In this third week of December, we have received total pledges of almost $17M and have raised over $15.9M in gi s. Our $16.1M goal was a difficult one, but with the leadership of our priests and their parish administra ve staffs and commi ees, as well as your extremely generous parishioners, we are solidly approaching 99% of our goal!

From our Together in Mission Staff, thank you for being a beacon of hope for our poor who live in our Archdiocese.

It is safe to say that a well-developed fundraising plan must include clear and measurable goals. This has always been our objec ve here at Annual Appeals, but with a lean department team, cri cal data reports o en were not able to be prepared because of more immediate opera onal responsibili es.

This year, we re-classed an open posi on and hired a database coordinator who could provide the database management team with key metric and key performance indicator reports so that we could study how our donors are giving. There is a maxim “What gets measured gets done” and that is exactly what we were able to achieve by evalua ng these cri cal reports.

With our results, we were able to reach out to our donor base and encourage them to either fulfill an exis ng pledge or consider a new one through alterna ve pla orms. Mobile-friendly online gi s via Mobile Cause increased 34% between the 2016 and 2017 and taught us that convenience is a key component to giving. We also learned that people do pay a en on to their emails. Constant Contact allowed us to reach out to our TIM donors especially in the second half of the campaign and they kindfully responded. Search Bug helped us with discerning a LANDline telephone number from a cell phone number, so that we could be more precise with our text releases.

For the TIM 2018 campaign, we will be saying goodbye to Luminate Online and will be adding a more online payment solu on that is streamlined, easy and customizable and will allow our donors to set up pledges with installments and actually see/track the history of their giving. Real- me transac on no fica ons will be generated so our donors will be certain their gi s were processed.

Many of you may have no ced that in addi on to the Parish Details Reports this year, our data team designed and created Individual Donor Reports for all 303 parishes, enabling and empowering every pastor and TIM Contact with a clearer understanding of their parish’s new, increased, decreased, drops, renewals, returns and walkaway TIM dona ons. This is the power of data and accurate and mely repor ng, when a strategic and very experienced fundraising team is at your disposal!

Our 25th anniversary Together in Mission theme “Let us Love” was influenced by Our Holy Father’s Declara on of the First World Day of The Poor. Our annual appeal is a direct expression of solidarity for

our needy brothers and sisters, so we were inspired by these words of sharing and support in this special year of annual giving.

Regarding best prac ces, you filled out your Together in Mission surveys and we listened to your feedback!

In the TIM 2018 campaign, we have added 5 Webinars to our suite of Parish Leadership Training Sessions. If it is inconvenient to drive to one of our Parish Leadership Training Sessions, please feel free to RSVP to Veronica Leon for one of the 5 webinars. Our a endance rates to these sessions are higher than ever, so we are looking forward to either seeing you in person or via the internet.

TOGETHER, we will celebrate a quarter century of helping those in need. YOU CONTINUE to BE the essen al catalyst of this appeal’s success. Thank you for allowing us to help you and in turn help those we love.

Amemos!

With gra tude,

Dee Smith

GETTING READY FOR CAMPAIGN LAUNCH

Bring the Campaign to Life

To ensure 100% of parish families make a gi to Together in Mission requires an enthusias-c and impassioned launch of the campaign at the parish.

Prepare the materials. In-pew envelopes, bulle n inserts, and pencils, should be divided and distributed for every Mass. For easy transi on between Masses, use clearly labeled bins.

Enlist parish volunteers to distribute and collect campaign materials during every Mass. U lize all resources to enhance the ask. Use homile cs, the campaign video, Altar and

Bulle n announcement samples to enhance your own talking points about the cam-paign.

Conduct the in‐pew process using the in-pew script, video, pledge cards and pencils. Reach out to poten al new donors. Invite those who specifically have never made a

gi to the campaign to do so this year. Share the story of Together in Mission

Have a Speaker: Contact the TIM office to have a representa ve from a TIM-supported parish and/or school speak to your parish. Or have a parishioner speak about why mak-ing a gi to TIM is important for them.

Show the Together in Mission campaign video. (During Mass if possible, or by sharing in parish hall during Announcement Weekend to prepare your parishioners for Commit-ment Weekend.

Speak passionately about the campaign u lizing TIM-provided resources. Include your parish’s specific 2018 goal and share with them the past results from 2017.

The Importance of the in‐pew process

Everyone needs to be asked

The in-pew process is the personal invita on every parishioner receives from the Pastor during Commitment & Follow-up Weekends to make their pledge. Even the most faithful of donors needs to be invited to make a gi and feel that their gi is integral to the success of the campaign. Addi onally, the in-pew process should also be thought of as an impac ul way for your parish to invite parishioners who have never made a gi to make an introduc-tory gi this year.

Commit to make a gi

It is important that every parish family make a pledge and/or gi at the designated me during Mass using the supplied pledge envelopes or their mobile phones. Ensure that pa-rishioners understand that they are able to make a pledge that they can pay off over several months and billing reminders can be emailed and mailed for their convenience.

GUEST SPEAKERS

What the speaker is expected to do?

Speak with the parish to coordinate day of logis cs with the parish and to make sure there is a point of contact and a mee ng place upon arrival. What the parish is expected to do for the speaker?

Inform the speaker when during the Mass they are to speak. (Preferably during the homily immediately preceding the in-pew process)

Provide them with space for respite between Masses. Including basic essen als snacks, drinks, and a restroom. What the speaker is NOT expected to do:

Conduct or lead the in-pew process. Leave before the end of the day or as agreed upon in advance. Solicit gi s on behalf of their own parish and/or school. What the parish should NOT expect:

Their assigned speaker to be available for BOTH the Saturday Vigil and all of Sun-day. We only ask our speakers to commitment to Sunday Masses. What the Together in Mission office is responsible for:

Assigning and training speakers to ensure they have access to facts and figures of the appeal.

While our goal is to facilitate speakers from recipient parishes & schools for donor parishes during both Announcement and Commitment Weekends, your parish can also invite a member of your

community to speak about the importance of making a gi to Together in Mission.

It takes a village

Consider invi ng those who make a pledge to step forward and deposit their pledge cards into a designated basket in front of the Altar to enhance their in-pew process and make your congrega on feel as though they are a part of something bigger.

Follow‐Up Weekend is vital Not everyone that will be at Mass on Follow-up Weekend will have a ended Mass the previous weekend.

HOMILETICS‐Announcement Sunday

Every me scripture is proclaimed Christ speaks. The readings assigned for the fi h through the seventh Sundays in Ordinary Time leave the homilist with a wonderful preaching plan re-newing our commitment to the Archdiocesan program Together in Mission. Even when a vid-eo is presented, a guest speaker shares their story, or pledges are being asked for, a brief one to two-minute homily will help the parishioners hear God’s word in light of Together in Mis‐sion.

This morning, our Church in Los Angeles invites us to embrace Together in Mission. And our readings echo that invita on.

In our first reading, Job speaks of the misery that fills the days of so many people. He tells of those who lack shelter … those who barely make it from paycheck to paycheck … those whose days “come to an end without hope.” We see such people in our streets and workplaces today.

Today’s Psalm acknowledges such difficult circumstances, but reassures all those who suffer. Because the Lord “heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

How does the Lord do this? Today he s ll heals people — he shelters them, he feeds them, he teaches them. But he does this through you and me. He does this through a Church whose members come Together in Mission. By using more than words, these ac ons of love are balms of consola on for those in need.

St. Paul writes to tell the Corinthians this “good news.” And he iden fies himself as the “slave to all.” As a Chris an, St. Paul knows he must live his life in service of others.

We see in today’s Gospel that St. Paul is simply following the example of Jesus. Our Lord heals the sick and rescues the oppressed. In fact, a er just one act of healing, he finds he must serve the whole town gathered at his door. And then he goes on to other towns, doing the same thing, “throughout the whole of Galilee.” Love for his neighbors meant taking ac on and bring-ing jus ce.

If we want to be like Jesus we must take part in the good works of his Church — works of healing and sheltering, teaching and consoling. Jesus comes to our land when we contribute to Together in Mission. Please pray about the contribu on you will make.

HOMILETICS‐ February 11 — Commitment Sunday Ordinary

When we hear the Scriptures proclaimed at Mass, we should hear God calling us to ac on. Right now, the Church is calling us as well. The Church is calling us to make a commitment to contribute TOGETHER IN MISSION. Our readings today make clear that this is one and the same call.

In our first reading, from the Book of Levi cus, we see how cruel the ancient world could be to people who suffered disease. Not only did they have to feel the pain of their ailments. They also had to live as social outcasts. They had to announce them-selves as “unclean.” Their ordinary life was humilia ng.

For them, every day was the “ me of trouble” we heard about in our Responsorial Psalm. “I turn to you, Lord, in me of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salva on.” Even on their worst days, they could turn to the Lord and seek and receive comfort and love.

Jesus came to relieve the troubles of such people. He came to integrate outcasts. St. Paul makes this very clear as he urges the Corinthian Church to place itself at the ser-vice of people of every background, both Jews and Gen les without dis nc on, and offending no one.

That’s how Jesus lived. In the Gospel we see him placing his divine power at the ser-vice of others, healing them — first one leper and then the many sick people who show up a erward. “People kept coming to him from everywhere.”

Are we sharing the gi s God has given us? When people turn to us, do they find the generosity of Jesus and St. Paul? They should! We are the Church of Los Angeles. We are the visible presence of Jesus whenever we draw Together in Mission to do the work of Jesus. On this day we have heard Jesus call to us in our readings, in the Gos-pel. Please make a pledged gi , and make a difference for those in need, to our Church’s annual appeal for Together in Mission especially in this 25th year of serving others.

HOMILETICS‐Follow‐Up Sunday

Today’s first reading told a familiar story. It’s the story of Noah and his ark. Today we heard the happy ending of that story — when God set a rainbow in the clouds and made mighty promises to the only family who had survived the flood

In making a covenant with them, God makes clear the expecta on that Noah’s family must live justly. He makes clear that they must go forward as stewards of Together in Mission.

And that is the call God commands of us today.

We admi ed this when we sang the Responsorial Psalm. We sang: “Your ways, O Lord, are love and truth to those who keep your covenant.” We must be those faithful people who keep the covenant — and then God will be “love and truth” to us.

So this is a very important ma er. Our own happiness depends on our faithfulness to the covenant. Peace in our land depends on our faithfulness to the covenant.

St. Peter says, in our second reading, that the Church today brings salva on in trying mes — just the way the ark brought salva on to Noah.

Yes, the Church brings salva on through the sacraments — through prayerful worship we offer in our parishes. The Church also brings salva on through the ministry of Catholic schools. The Church brings salva on through our Catholic hospitals, and cri cal and sea-sonal homeless shelters, and its many programs of ministerial assistance and outreach to parish communi es. These are the programs we support through Together in Mission. Eve-ry region of our archdiocese is posi vely impacted by these generous funds.

Jesus said in today’s Gospel: “This is the me of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand.” Do our Chris an lives show that we believe this is true? NOW is the me when we must be faithful to our calling. The Church is calling us Together in Mission. The Church is pleading with us, on God’s behalf, to come to the assistance of our neighbors by generously giving to this annual appeal, Together in Mission.

Please, let this indeed be “the me of fulfillment.”

Please make a gi today.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER FOLLOW‐UP WEEKEND?

The campaign doesn’t end on Follow‐up Weekend, we s ll need your help to reach the campaign goal. There are follow-up mailings The TIM office will undertake throughout the year to ensure your parish achieves its goal. In addi on, there are opportuni es listed be-low that the parish can par cipate in to ensure your successful in reaching its Together in Mission goal. What if our parish does not reach our goal in pledges a er Follow‐up Weekend? What is a sufficient amount of pledges? A general rule of thumb is that a parish must secure a min-imum of 110% of their goal in pledges, as annually between 10%-15% of pledges go unful-filled. U lize Parish Progress Reports to ensure donor contact informa on is correct, see who is paying their pledge, and what donors our office can not mail to due to incomplete address informa on. Parish Follow up opportuni es Submit Timely Batches throughout the en rety of the campaign. Monthly Altar /Bulle n Announcements are a helpful way to keep parishioners in-

formed about the campaign and your parish’s progress. Par cipa ng in the summer “parish mailing”. The TIM office sends the mailing, we just

need your le erhead and pastor’s signature. Customized bulle n inserts. The TIM office provides customized bulle n inserts that

your parish can use to promote the various follow-up mailings. These bulle n inserts will be emailed and we encourage each parish to print and place them within the bulle-

n.

How can I monitor my parish’s progress? The TIM Office prepares several weekly reports to track your parish’s progress. The specific reports and how the can help your parish are listed below. Parish Progress Report : Provides detailed informa on about donor par cipa on, cumula-

ve giving (Pledges & Paid), and overall progress towards achieving your parish’s goal. Renewal Report: Highlights who has renewed their gi , increased or decreased their gi , or has not made a pledge/gi to date. Non‐Valid Address Report: lists all of the parishioners who have pledged during the cam-paign, but their address is not up to date. E mail vleon@la‐archdiocese.org with address updates.

HOW TO BUILD A BATCH‐SENDING IN PLEDGE CARDS AND PAYMENTS

What is a batch? A batch contains pledge cards, forms of payments, and a transmi al (cover sheet), which outlines what is enclosed in the batch that the parish prepares and sends to the Together in Mission for pro-cessing. How to Build a Batch: Step 1: Review handwri en pledge cards to ensure that they are legible and all the essen al bio-graphical informa on is present. Please add addi onal name or address informa on if known so that we can record and send accurate reminders to the donor. (See appendix for examples of pledge cards that need addi onal informa on) Step 2: Breakdown, bundle, and label, the pledge envelopes into their respec ve categories. [do not separate donor’s checks from their pledge cards)

Cash Gi s (One-Time) Cash Gi s (W/ Remaining Balance) Anonymous Cash (gi s from donors that did not complete a pledge card) Check Gi s (One-Time) Check Gi s (W/ Remaining Balance) Credit Card Gi s Promissory Pledges

Step 3: Record the number of items enclosed, and total amount pledged and paid u lizing the elec-tronic form of the transmi al available on the Resource Sec on of the Together in Mission website. Step 4: Make a copy/save an electronic copy of the transmi al for your records. Step 5: Use TIM supplied return envelopes to mail all bundled pledge cards with a completed trans-mi al. Step 6: Send your batches directly to the TIM Office, 3424 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90010. Do not send any batches to the PO Box Address. Helpful Tips When Building a Batch: Replace all cash from parishioners with a parish check. Do not staple or paper clip checks to pledge cards. How O en Does a Parish Need to Send a Batch? The first few batches are the largest and we ask that a parish submit its first batch by February 27th . A er the campaign launch, please send pledge cards/payments as they are received. (weekly batches are appreciated).

TOGETHER IN MISSION BATCH PROCESSING‐LIKE A FINGERPRINT

The Together in Mission office processes batches as they are received. The batch contents are veri-fied against the transmi al to ensure that the total number of items we receive match the amounts s pulated on the transmi al. If needed, correc ons will be made and reflected on the “Parish Batch Verifica on Report” emailed to the address of record when a batch has been processed.

If the Batch is Complete

If the batch is complete and accurate, checks are deposited and all items are processed. The par-ish receives a “Parish Batch Verifica on Report” a er a batch has been processed in our office.

If Changes are Needed to the Batch

If the parish check is “short”, meaning it does not have enough funds to cover the en rety of pledge cards included in the parish batch, the TIM Office will process as many items as possible and a representa ve from the TIM Office will contact the parish and return the items that repre-sent the short fall. These items can be included in the next batch from the parish.

If the parish check exceeds the amount represented by the pledge cards in the batch the TIM Office will process the remaining funds as anonymous gi s on the parish’s record.

When the donor needs to be contacted

If the donor failed to include a check, there is an issue with their credit card, or the donor did not mark the appropriate fields on the pledge card s pula ng an intent to pledge a specific amount, the TIM Office will contact the donor directly to correct the issue.

All batch discrepancies outlined above will be marked on the Parish Batch Verifica on Report in the Batch Entry Note Sec on located at the bo om of the report.

Parish Reports

Parish reports will be emailed weekly. These reports will contain all processed items from parish batches, Direct Mail, pledge payments and online gi s. (See Appendix for sample reports).
