In 1927, my grandfather started a small textile factory in the basement of his farmhouse at Tveiten, a moun-tain village on the island of Osterøy, on the west coast of Norway.
The business grew fast and soon “the factory in the mountains” became a valuable employer for many people in the district.
New designs and models were devel-oped and distributed all over Norway.In 1947, the production was moved from the mountains down to a new factory built on the side of the beau-tiful Osterfjord, where the business is located today.
The factory turned its production in 1990, from producing underwear of cotton to making woollen knitwear for children, women and men, with the brand name of “Norlender”.Norlender`s designs are all based on our rich Norwegian knitting heritage, where traditional materials are used to obtain the highest quality.
Our woolen range includes garments suitable for all occasions; formal, sporty and leisure. Here in Norway the cold climate has been the best teacher for learning about all the good qualities of wool, which is the only yarn we use.

WOOLNorway is known world-wide for the high quality of its woollen clothing. Keeping warm in the cold and often wet climate of the north has been a key factor for survival over the centuries, and wool is a natural fibre with the extraordinary properties to do just that. The Norwegian wool has long strong fibres, which results in a hard wearing yarn with high thermal ratings, a product of the natural evolution of our hardy Norwegian sheep to combat the tough local climate. Norwegian wool is used in over 70% of our knitwear range, while the remaining garments in fine gauge use European yarns. 100% Merino wool is used in a selection of models where a soft and luxurious handle is required.
NORWEGIAN KNITTING TRADITIONSWool is an important element in the Norwegian cultural heritage and has been used in Norway for clothing for over 6000 years. In more recent centuries wool has been used for knitting, weaving, and felting, and is an important element in our traditional folk costumes. Advanced multicolour patterns were hand knitted and decked with beautiful woven bands and pewter clasps. You can find all of these elements in the Norlender collections, made into beautiful garments, suitable for the modern man, women and child.
