It all starts wIth a goal. Have girls set their goals! Are they aiming for summer camp? Travel? The Go Pro Camera? Whatever it is, have them write it down and map out a plan on how they’ll achieve it.

get Parent Buy In. Hold a short family meeting so girls can tell their families about their goals and ask for assistance.

Explain how the Girl Scout Cookie Program teaches girls the 5 key skills, raises money for the troop and allows the council to provide quality programs, volunteer training and more.

This is a great time for you to review the council’s Product Sale Policies and Procedures, as well as have the parents sign the Permission Form. Girls cannot participate without signed forms.

MaterIal, Dates anD DeaDlInes. Pass out the Family Cookie Guide, Goal-Getter Cards, a calendar with all the deadlines and your contact information.

ask for helP.If everyone pitches in, the smoother the program will go. Ask for volunteers to help count and sort cookies when they arrive, commit to working a cookie booth, or passing out rewards when they come.

revIew the rulesCollect payment upon delivery, not before. Be sure to turn over all funds to your Troop Cookie Manager.

Remember that products cannot be returned to the troop or council once signed for.

Parents are financially responsible for all cookies they receive.

•Keep receipts until program is over in case of a mistake.

•Give a firm deadline for 1/2 cookie payment and final payment leaving you enough time to deposit the money. ACH 1/2 deduction is on March 6, 2019 and the remaining balance will be deducted on March 28, 2019.

•Explain Outstanding Balance Forms. All unpaid debts should be submitted to the council. Troops should never pay for an Outstanding Balance. Keep records! Outstanding Balance Forms are due March 27, 2019.

reMInD everyone thIs Is for the gIrls.

The Girl Scout Cookie Program can keep you busy and it’s easy to lose sight of what’s important. A great way to keep things focused and positive is to put selling cookies in the context of something bigger and more important.

The Girl Scout Promise and Girl Scout Law remind girls—and you!—that selling cookies lets girls practice being fair, kind, helpful, respectful and wise. And it helps them make the world a better place. That’s what it’s all about.

Every day, Girl Scout volunteers make it possible for girls across our council to enjoy and benefit from an adventure-having, skill-building, lead-taking, life-changing good time.

Without our volunteers’ commitment to unleashing the G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ in every girl, we couldn’t and wouldn’t be able to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.

Showing love and appreciation for our volunteers is a long-standing Girl Scout tradition. Now is the time to start thinking about those outstanding volunteers who go above and beyond all expectations, and have a definite impact on not only their troop, but their service unit and sometimes even the whole council.

Volunteer Recognition and Award nominations will be accepted January 1- March 31, 2019. The nomination forms will be available online starting January 1.

Awards will be presented during a special celebration on June 8, 2019 at For the Kingdom Camp in Memphis, TN.

The council care team is here to help with the process if you have any questions about requirements, or past awards received. Give them a call at 800-624-4185 or [email protected].

One Heart is our council underlying principle that encourages members to practice kindness and compassion, seek common ground and understanding, and serve our neighbors and communities, while living the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

Below is an incredible story from a council staff member, about how the opportunity to perform a random act of kindness presented itself to her one evening in Kroger.

Last year around this time I was in Kroger. There was a young mother with four kids shopping. Each time her kids would ask for something special for the holidays, she would tell them “No, we can only afford the basics.” I followed them around the

store. Each item I saw them ask for that they couldn’t have, I put in my shopping cart.

When it came time to check out, I bought all the things – plus a few I thought they would enjoy. They were in the line next to me. I told the young man bagging the groceries to give them to the family after I was done and leaving the store.

I got to my car and much to my surprise, the family was parked two cars down from me. They started loading things in their car and the kids were so excited and jumping up and down over all the things that were in the sacks. I never said anything to them, just watched them look in each bag and squeal. My holiday spirit went from normal to extra high.

Not everyone can do something like the random act of kindess that one of our staff members performed during the holidays, so we’ve put together some ideas of inexpensive things you can do to lift the holiday spirits of others.

Here Are oUr 12 dAyS of KindneSS: day 1: Put sticky notes with positive messages in public places.day 2: Pay $5 of someone’s layaway.day 3: Take flowers to the nurse’s station at your local hospital – the nurses will know who needs them most.day 4: Take lunch (sandwiches and chips), cookies, or cupcakes to your local fire department and/or police department.day 5: Donate stuffed animals to police and fire departments to use during emergencies to help calm frightened children.day 6: Sing Christmas Carols, play board games, or just visit with senior citizens at a nursing home.day 7: Hand out gloves, mittens, hats and scarves to the homeless, or leave them on park benches, tie scarves to trees or signs. The dollar store is a great place to get these items.day 8: Bring coffee to police on patrol, or anyone working outside.day 9: Help someone load their groceries.day 10: Offer to return someone’s shopping cart to the store.day 11: Leave a favorite book in a public place with a note that’s it’s free for the taking. day 12: Leave candy canes on the windshields of random cars.

Don’t forget to request your troop or service unit’s free One Heart Kindness Cards

These business size cards have a list of ideas for being kind on one side and a note to the recipient on the other asking them to continue to pay kindness forward.

Each troop can order one set of 12 for the girls to use. Additional sets of 12 are available and can be ordered for a $5 donation to the council.

The 5th Annual National Stand Beside Her Week was an OUTSTANDING SUCCESS!

the annual nationwide celebration of this captivating movement celebrating girls and women everywhere! Begun right here by Girl Scouts Heart of the South, this now national movement is a call to action for women and girls to unite their voices in a divisive world and end the comparison, competition and criticism that undermines female relationships. The National Stand Beside Her Movement culminates each year during the last week in October to encourage people to commit to supporting all girls and women from the classroom to the board room!

This year, the number of Girl Scout councils choosing to adopt the Stand Beside Her principles and engage as official Girl Scout Collaborative Councils blossomed to 42! We continue to be thrilled and inspired by how this exciting movement is resonating with girls and women across the country!

Throughout October, troops from coast to coast participated in a number of Stand Beside Her-themed activities and earned their Stand Beside Her patch. Many chose to decorate their local elementary school girls’ bathrooms

THE NATIONAL STAND BESIDE HER MOVEMENT IS A YEAR-ROUND CALL TO ACTION INITIATIVE TO MENTOR, SUPPORT AND DEVELOP WOMEN AND GIRLS; TO END COMPARISON AND COMPETITION AND CREATE MORE COLLABORATION AND SUPPORT FOR ONE ANOTHER. GeT OuTDOOrSGeT OuTDOOrS 2019 SUMMER CAMP

Camp is a magical experience... an opportunity to truly escape and focus on building courage, confidence and character. Build a campfire, pitch a tent or canoe across a lake. Explore the outdoors on horseback, complete a challenge course and shoot a bulls-eye in archery.

Attending camp is consistently cited as girls’ favorite memories of their Girl Scout years. By sending your girl to camp, she will develop leadership and outdoor skills and develop a deep appreciation for our natural world. Girl Scout camp gives girls an opportunity to grow, explore and have fun under the guidance of caring, trained adults.

Check out the 2019 summer camp sessions in the fall/winter The Promise, coming to your mailbox soon, or view it online here.

A complete summer camp guide will be released Wednesday, December 5. Early bird camp registration opens February 1, with a $10 off all registrations for the month of February!

And, mark your calendars for our camp open houses: April 28 - Camp Tik-A-Witha Open House May 5 - Kamp Kiwani Open House
