Title: What’s an Ache Like You Doing in a Joint Like This? Hands-On Orthopedic
Assessment Intended Audience: BLS and ALS

“I can’t tell if it’s broken, I don’t have x-ray eyes.” All of us have spoken a variation of that phrase on an EMS scene, but it isn’t necessarily true. When it comes to orthopedic assessment, there are plenty of physical exam techniques that accurately rule out fractures, and thus the need for x-rays. Join Kelly Grayson as he teaches us to lay our hands on patients and gain more diagnostic information in the field than we thought was possible. Objectives:
1. Discuss and describe the accuracy of NEXUS at ruling out cervical fracture. 2. Discuss and describe the Ottawa Ankle and Foot Rules for evaluating foot and ankle
injuries. 3. Discuss and describe the Ottawa Knee Rules for evaluating knee injuries. 4. Discuss and describe auscultatory percussion in assessment of suspected long-bone
fractures. 5. Discuss and describe various other orthopedic physical examination techniques.

That was the premise for Carnegie Mellon University’s “Last Lecture” series, in which Professor Randy Pausch, recently diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer, delivered his inspiring talk, “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.” The lecture and resulting book were an inspiration to millions, including one paramedic who pondered what wisdom he would impart to his profession if it were his very last chance. Join Kelly Grayson as he delivers his inspiring, hypothetical last lesson: put your heart in it.

Kelly Grayson has been a Critical Care Paramedic and EMS Educator for twenty-three years. He teaches extensively in the "alphabet soup" disciplines such as ACLS, PALS, BLS, PHTLS, PEPP, GEMS, AMLS and so on, and has taught and administered all levels of EMT courses, from First Responder through Paramedic. He is president of the Louisiana Society of EMS Educators and a board member of the LA Association of Nationally Registered EMTs, and currently works as a critical care paramedic for Acadian Ambulance in southwest Louisiana. He is the EMS Education Coordinator for the Louisiana Ambulance Alliance Center for Education for EMS. He is a regular columnist for EMS1.com and EMS World Magazine. His books, En Route and On Scene, are available on Amazon, both in Kindle and print formats.

Title: Sepsis: Recognizing the Silent Killer Intended Audience: ALS

“Granny has a fever.” We’ve all run those calls, but are they as routine as we believe? In reality, sepsis is the #1 non-cardiac killer of ICU patients, with a mortality rate well over 50%. It is a clinical syndrome that affects over 750,000 Americans a year, and one that is undergoing increasing attention from prehospital providers. Early recognition and treatment is the key to survival. This presentation will examine the integral role of EMS in the management of sepsis, including Sepsis Alert Criteria and prehospital treatment guidelines. Objectives:
1. Discuss the epidemiology of sepsis, particularly among the elderly. 2. Discuss the pathophysiology of sepsis. 3. Compare and contrast SIRS clinical criteria with qSOFA. 4. Discuss SIRS/qSOFA as they pertain to Sepsis Alert Criteria. 5. Examine strategies to implement a Sepsis Alert program for your EMS agency. 6. Discuss current prehospital and ED assessment and management of sepsis.

Brief Speaker Bio
Kelly Grayson has been a Critical Care Paramedic and EMS Educator for twenty-four years. He teaches extensively in the "alphabet soup" disciplines such as ACLS, PALS, BLS, PHTLS, PEPP, GEMS, AMLS and so on, and has taught and administered all levels of EMT courses, from First Responder through Paramedic. Kelly is president of the Louisiana Association of EMS Educators and a board member of the LA Association of Nationally Registered EMTs. He currently works as a critical care paramedic for Acadian Ambulance in southwest Louisiana, and is the EMS Education Coordinator for ACE4EMS. He is an award-winning columnist for EMS1.com and EMS World Magazine. His books, En Route and On Scene, are available through Amazon and booksellers nationwide.
