“Moving to Australia was a big step for me and it was not long before I realised that to get into the Australian job market, a degree would not be enough. I approached Joblinx and I was amazed at how friendly and supportive the staff were. My Joblinx consultant put in a lot of effort and got me an internship in an accounting firm.

Today I am working in accounts payable in a leading organisation. This would not have been possible without the help and support I received from Joblinx.”

"Why JCU Brisbane? I think there would be very few universities where it feels like home. The fact that the campus is culturally diverse and in the heart of Brisbane City makes it the perfect place to study and meet students from various backgrounds.Speaking of the advantages, one major advantage is that throughout my course the staff have been exceptionally helpful, they have been there when I needed them most. With excellent study materials and practical knowledge of both IT and the Business side of things, this course has made me ready to face real world challenges head on. Along with studies, the various workshops for learning and extracurricular activities have kept me busy and open to learning new things every day. Finally, the major advantage at JCU Brisbane would be Joblinx. Joblinx and their experienced staff helped me secure an internship in a matter of weeks. This allowed me to gain real experience in the Australian IT and Business sector, keeping me one step ahead when applying for that much awaited job."

Important Information

Student VisasHow to obtain an Australian visa for study at JCU BrisbaneAs of 1 July 2016, the new Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF) came into effect. This means there are new requirements to consider when applying for a Student Visa to study in Australia. You or your Agent (on your behalf) will need to apply for your visa directly with the Department of Home Affairs. All international students will now apply for a single student visa (subclass 500), regardless of their chosen course of study. What does this mean for you?• Mandatory online lodgement of Student Visa

Applications• Student document check list tool (this tool allows

you to provide evidence to ensure you meet financial and English language requirements)

• A new immigration risk framework is used to guide the evidence of English language and financial capacity that a student needs to provide with their visa application

Key Requirements for student visa (subclass 500):• Genuine temporary entrant (GET) requirement• Enrolment in a registered course of study• Financial capacity and English language

proficiency• Health and character• Health insurance• No debt to the Australian GovernmentFor more information, please refer to The Department of Home Affairs www.homeaffairs.gov.au Working as a StudentUnder Australian immigration regulations, students on a student visa may work up to 40 hours per fortnight during university teaching periods and without restriction during university vacations.Permission to work in Australia will be automatically included when the student is granted a student visa.

For further information regarding your working rights please refer to www.fairwork.gov.au

Working Rights for PartnersIf a student’s spouse is joining them, they will also be able to work whilst the student is studying in Australia and can apply for a permission to work visa. The work conditions for the spouse will vary depending on the degree that is being studied. Bringing FamilySpouses and children can join the student in Australia but each family member must be added to the student visa application, and certain conditions will apply depending on the age of each family member. If the children will be attending school while in Australia, school fees will need to be paid for them. For more information, visit: www.eqi.com.au

ESOS Act and Tuition Protection ServiceAs a provider of education services to international students in Australia, James Cook University is required to comply with the Education Services for Overseas Students Act (ESOS Act) and the National Code of Practice for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and

Training to Overseas Students (The National Code). The ESOS legislation and National Code, specify minimum standards for the delivery of courses to students in Australia studying on a student visa and regulate what information must be given to existing and prospective international students, what support must be provided to existing students, what records are kept and what information is to be given to government agencies about international students. For more information visit the ESOS Act webpage.JCU’s Tuition Fee Policy for International Students applies to overseas students who do not commence their studies with JCU, or withdraw before their course is completed. The policy sets out the circumstances in which a student is entitled to a refund as required under the ESOS Act, and can be found at: www.jcu.edu.au/policy/student-services

Important InformationThe Tuition Protection Service (TPS) is a placement and refund service for international students studying on a student visa which also operates under the ESOS Act. The TPS replaces the Tuition Assurance Scheme and the ESOS Assurance Fund. On the rare occasions that a provider is unable to deliver a course an international student has paid for and does not meet its legal obligations to make alternative course replacements or provide a refund, the TPS will assist students to find an alternative place or, if this is not possible, provide a refund of any unspent tuition fees. For further information see: www.tps.gov.au

Deferral, Temporary Suspension or Cancellation of EnrolmentThe ESOS National Code and student visa conditions contain restrictions on when students, or JCU, can defer, suspend or cancel a student enrolment. Deferring commencement of study, or taking a leave of absence once studies have commenced can only take place when there are compassionate or compelling reasons for doing so. A “compassionate or compelling reason” is something which is beyond the student’s control and which has, or will have, an impact on academic progress or wellbeing. The university may suspend a student temporarily, enforcing a break from study, in certain circumstances. For more information on deferral, suspension and cancellation of study see our website.
