Bechtel on Pace to Deliver Vit Plant MissionBy Peggy McCullough Bechtel Project Director

Dating back to the 1980s, Bechtel and our dedicated employees have maintained a presence at the Hanford Site and in our community. In the 1990s and early 2000s, we shifted focus to Hanford cleanup by safely demolishing surplus defense production reactors and removing contaminated soils away from the Columbia River corridor. Today, our mission centers on completing a Vitrification Plant to safely treat Hanford’s underground radioactive and chemical tank waste to protect the Columbia River.

Throughout 2017, our team made significant progress towards preparing the 65-acre Vitrification Plant to begin treating low-activity tank waste as soon as 2022.

Much of the work this year concentrated on Low-Activity Waste vitrification facility construction, which we are on pace to complete next summer. Our workforce installed and assembled all major processing equipment and completed major steel, piping, electrical, and HVAC infrastructure. We also largely completed construction for an adjacent Analytical Laboratory.

We also furthered the startup and testing phase for completed Vitrification Plant utilities systems that provide electrical power, air, water, and steam communication and control systems. As engineers and construction crews finish portions of the utilities they are transferring systems to the startup phase. During startup, we verify systems are complete, tested and in safe and working order. After the startup phase, systems then enter a commissioning phase to ensure they are calibrated, maintained, integrated and ready to support the Vitrification Plant mission.

Just as our workforce made progress in protecting the Columbia River, we also continued making the Tri-Cities and surrounding region a better place to live and work for everyone. Last year alone, we contributed more than $590,000 to local organizations such as United Way, March of Dimes, and Junior Achievement, and our employees gave their time to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs at local universities, colleges and schools.

We look forward to 2018 as we continue our mission to protect the Columbia River and being a part of the Tri-Cities community.

Washington River Protection Solutions (Visionary level) and CH2M HILL Plateau Remediation Company, Lourdes Health Network and Red Lion Hotels (Executive level) all recently renewed their memberships.

Dave Haler of Basin Pacific Insurance, Karen Blasdel of Battelle, Grover Hettel of Energy Northwest, Don Miller of GESA Credit Union and Andy Stirling of Numerica Credit Union will join our Board of Directors in 2018.

On September 15th, our Board of Directors held its annual retreat aboard Water2Wine Cruises. The day long retreat was focused on our Chamber 2020 Strategic Plan objectives to contemporize our brand and communications, small business programs, impacting a diverse business community, a local government affairs committee plan, and plans for a Regional Vision Project.

Meet the Buyer: Doing Business with Washington State Agencies was attended by 38 small business representatives who gained valuable information about participating in state contracting and taking part in the government marketplace.

In October, we partnered with FUSE to host the “Changing Behavior through Innovation” luncheon featuring keynote Oren Nissim. The event drew a diverse crowd of 255 attendees.

The Regional Chamber is once again participating in the 8th Annual Small Business Saturday event as a Neighborhood Champion. We encourage holiday shoppers to patronize small and local, brick and mortar businesses on Saturday, November 25th!

On October 17 – 19, 114 volunteers

worked with Your Chamber Connection

to recruit 155 new members to the

Chamber, as well as upgrade 22 existing

memberships, raising over $75,000 in

revenue for the Chamber!

During the month of October, our

Procurement Technical Assistance

Center (PTAC) Counselor assisted small

businesses in obtaining 74 government

contracts totaling $11,911,246!!!

The Tri-City Regional Chamber Board, volunteers and staff are

focused on delivering value to our members. Every Chamber

strategy, program and service is created specifically to provide

positive results and bring credit to our region. Here’s a look into

recent activities, plans and results.

UPDATEDIVERSITY & INCLUSION

The Community Inclusion and Outreach department continues to reach out to a diverse group of businesses and community organizations. We are garnering valuable information that will help us identify unmet business needs and refine our current programming or create new ones. Our approach will ensure the Chamber does not duplicate efforts undertaken by others or compete with member businesses and like-minded partners. Rather, we are hoping that reaching out to these organizations and businesses will lead to strong partnerships and collaborations that will help maintain a sharp focus on the most impactful investments.

During the past month, our outreach efforts have included the following:

• Visits to our new members• AWB Rural Jobs Summit• Downtown Pasco Development Authority

quarterly meeting• Pasco High School Career Fair• Building Bridges and Breaking Down Barriers

(ACCESS Tri-Cities)

Like many communities, our region is going through some exciting times fueled by economics, demographic and generational transitions. Here at the Tri-City Regional Chamber of Commerce, we see the human, industry, and business mix within our region as a pantry with ingredients aplenty. We also believe our region has the right combination of Chefs (partners) to whip out an inclusive and innovative community that’s resistant to future economic downturns. As Dr. Manuel Pastor and Dr. Chris Benner state on their Diversity and Inclusion for the 21st Century report, “Business thrives when community and connections are part of the region’s DNA – when no skill goes untapped, no dream goes unrealized, and no resilience goes undeveloped.” That is the ultimate goal and the Chamber will play a key role in its attainment.

Employers: Get ready now

for paid sick leaveNew law takes effect Jan. 1

Do you provide paid sick leave to your employees? All employers in Washington will be required to very soon. The new paid sick leave law starts Jan. 1, 2018.

It's one of the changes resulting from Initiative 1433, which was approved by voters last fall.

The Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) is implementing the new law, which

also includes annual increases in the state minimum wage through 2020 and ensures employers pay their

employees tips and service charges.
