2018 Lent Term No. 1 Newsletter 12.01.18
Message from the Headmistress
Key Values: Innovation, Confidence, Aspiration, Respect, Enthusiasm
Dear Parents
Welcome to the first newsletter of the Lent Term. I would like to begin by thanking all of you for making me feel so
welcome to the school community. I am looking forward very much to getting to know everyone and, as I told the pupils in
my first assembly, I will be able to say I have really settled when I have got to grips with all their names!
Mock GCSE Examinations
It has been a busy start to the term with Year 11s taking mock examinations and I have been impressed with how sensibly
and calmly they have approached them. Hopefully, they will have been given a taste of what to expect in the Summer.
Year 9 Arts Enrichment Day On Wednesday, we were delighted to welcome pupils from Cottingham High School, Newland School for Girls and Beverley
High School who joined with our Year 9 pupils for an Arts Enrichment Day. During the course of the day, pupils took part in
a life drawing session delivered by Esther Cawley (a local artist), a Q&A with actor Adrian Rawlins (probably best known for
playing Harry Potter’s father in the films), a drama workshop with Simon Willmott (an actor who played Eddie in Blood
Brothers and toured internationally with Mamma Mia), a media tutorial on film editing and a music workshop on the
power of words and music.
This was a fantastic experience for the pupils who
thoroughly enjoyed the day.
My thanks to our staff for organising and running the
sessions.
You can see more photographs of the day over the
page and on our website.

Careers Breakfast Meeting
Thank you to Detective Constable Lee Ross from Humberside Police who came into school yesterday to talk with pupils about his career in the police force.
D.C. Ross works in Counter Terrorism, a highly demanding role. It was a very thought provoking meeting which raised some interesting questions from the pupils.
The next Careers Breakfast Meeting is on Wednesday 24 January, when we welcome guest speaker Mr John Levison from Swanbridge Veterinary Group.
This event is open to all pupils in Years 10-13. If you would like your son/daughter to attend, please email
Hub Demonstration Sessions for Senior School Parents
The Hub is an extremely useful source of information. You can see your child’s timetable, grades, sports fixtures and much more. During the sessions, Mr Fong will be demonstrating how to use the Hub and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. This is also the per-fect opportunity to meet our new Headmistress, Alex Wilson, who will be in attendance and is keen to meet as many parents as possible.
The sessions will last approximately 45 minutes and are taking place in the Drawing Room on the following dates:
Tuesday 30 January 15:15
Thursday 1 February 16:00
Numbers are required for catering purposes, so please email [email protected] at your earliest conven-ience, stating which session and how many people would like to attend.

Visit by Smith and Nephew
Global Business Services
At the end of last term, Smith and Nephew visited the school to talk about the importance of modern lan-guages in the workplace. They gave a very interesting presentation on the history of the company and its cur-rent global interests, and then explained the rich variety of languages known by colleagues and how these were used on a daily basis.
It is hoped that the visit helped pupils appreciate the value of speaking another language at any level and the exciting doors this will open for them alongside any number of alternative careers they may choose to fol-low.
Wassail! Carols of Comfort and Joy
In November, pupils from the Prep and Senior schools took part in the first performance of ‘Wassail!’ com-missioned by United Learning. The project is up for the chance of winning ‘Best Classical Music Education Initi-ative 2018’.
Please vote for us to win and share the link with friends.

Switzerland Ski Trip February 2019
We have ONE place remaining for any pupil in Year 4 – 10 who wishes to go on the ski trip during February 2019 half term.
Please contact Mr Windeatt immediately to reserve this place.
Reminder to Parents of Year 11
As part of their internal mock examination timetable, pupils studying a Modern Foreign Language are also having a speaking test. These tests will continue until Friday 19 January and consist of role plays, discus-sion of a photograph, and a general conversation.
They already have a list of conversation questions covered in class for this exam, which is worth 25% of the qualification.
Thorough preparation in advance will maximize the opportunities to do well in this section of the exami-nation.
Ugandan children to visit Hull Collegiate School
Working with Felsted Chapel School and Highgate School (both London-based), we are hoping to bring a group of eight pupils and two members of staff from Great Lakes High School in Uganda over to the UK. During their two week stay with host parents/pupils, the visitors will spend valuable time at each of the schools.
Dr Hamlet, who visited us in September and set up Great Lakes High School in Uganda and its four feeder schools, has challenged his Ugandan pupils to prove their worth through their academic diligence and work in the commu-nity. Those who work the hardest will get the opportunity to win this unique experience.
This would be an amazing opportunity for both pupils in Uganda and our pupils here. It would be satisfying to cre-ate a cultural exchange between our schools which allows them to visit here, rather than us always visiting them.
All three UK schools now need to raise £3000 each to make this happen. Hull Collegiate School have already re-ceived a kind donation from the Hull Rotary Club.
We will need your help to raise our target of £3000. If you are able to make a donation, or if you would like to be a host for one of the children during their stay, please email
Thank you.

As part of our efforts, pupils in 9Fong will be selling items of stationery, such as pens and pencils; buy one and avoid getting a referral for being ill-equipped in les-sons! They will also run a bun/sweet stall; details to fol-low.
9Fong are asking for donations of newborn and prema-ture baby sized nappies to donate to Hull Royal Infirma-ry. These can be given to any member of the form , Miss Groves or Mr Fong.
