MERINOLINK CURRENT PROJECTS 1. Merino Lifetime Productivity Project – Host Site (2016 – 2023)

The Merino Lifetime Productivity (MLP) project has been designed to capture lifetime data from diverse environments, genetics and Merino types that will help us

better understand and deliver lifetime performance outcomes for the Australian Merino industry. The project is funded by entrants and Australian Wool Innovation.

The project offers a unique opportunity to answer many industry questions. The MLP project runs on five sites where sire evaluation trial operates for the first two years and then the MLP project continues to measure the performance of ewe progeny over four to five joinings and annual shearings.

The ewe progeny will be annually assessed for visual and objective traits. Below is a list of sires participating at the MerinoLink site.

2. Sheep Supplement Trial (2015-2016)

MerinoLink partnered with Charles Sturt University (Veterinary Faculty) to conduct a project funded by the NSW Sheep Industry Fund to investigate several vitamins, mineral and trace element supplementations for sheep currently on the market. Anecdotal reports from producers and suppliers

indicates regular use of these supplements on sheep farms, however there is little or no recent literature or research that investigate the cost benefit of using these products to promote growth rates and health in sheep in eastern Australia.

3. Group Buying Power (2014 – ongoing)

On behalf of our members, MerinoLink has been able to negotiate group buying power opportunities. We are able to offer, exclusive to MerinoLink members, discounts of up to 25% on electronic tags and up to 12% on visual tags. MerinoLink is working with three

companies – Moses & Son, Ear Tag Warehouse and Shearwell. This offer can provide you with significant savings for example if you purchase 1000 electronic tags (NLIS or Non-NLIS) you can save up to $445.00. This would cover your MerinoLink membership fee.

4. MerinoLink Annual Conference (2014 – ongoing)

MerinoLink host an Annual Conference and Conference Field Day. The conference features a range of topics covering the latest research in sheep and wool and industry trade displays. Members have an opportunity to have direct input into the program. The conference has been held in Temora, Wagga and Goulburn NSW. In 2018 it will again be held in Goulburn NSW. The conference aims to challenge members and bring the most up to date research and ideas to the forum.

5. MerinoLink Sire Evaluation (2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017)

MerinoLink coordinate two Merino Sire Evaluation sites in Southern NSW. One near Jugiong NSW and one near Yass NSW, under the auspices of the Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Association (AMSEA).

Sires being evaluated at Jugiong in 2014, 2015 and 2016 are from the following ram breeders: Billandri

Poll Merinos (WA); Roseville Park (NSW); Hazeldean (NSW); Weealla Merinos & Poll Merino Stud (NSW); Mumblebone Merinos (NSW); Centre Plus (NSW); Willandra Poll Merino Stud (NSW); Pastora Poll (NSW); Wattledale Merinos (WA); Woodpark Poll (NSW); Greendale (NSW); Pooginook (NSW); Kerin Poll (NSW); GRASS Merinos (NSW).

The 2017 MerinoLink Sire Evaluation joining will be run at “Ravenswood”, part of “Cavan” Station. “Cavan” Station is an historic property located along the Murrumbidgee River in the Southern Tablelands, South of Yass, NSW. MerinoLink joined with the Monaro Farming Systems Group to jointly host the sire evaluation and to expand our groups’ networks. Rams entered in the 2017 sire evaluation include: Bundilla 140055 (Link); Hazeldean 11.3542 (Link); Centre Plus 407185 (Link); Bogo 500300, Pooginook Poll 125188; Rocklyn Merinos 120182; Woodpark Poll 150106; Centre Plus 307603; Hazeldean 13.4936; GRASS 142000; Adina 124156; Nerstane 150076; Greendale 150018; Boudjah P0005; Centre Plus WA 338205; Hazeldean 204030.

6. eID Tag Demonstration and Evaluation (2014)

“What electronic tag is the best?”

This is a question many sheep producers ask when considering using electronic tags for the first time. MerinoLink with the assistance of Moses & Son has set up a trial to evaluate five (5) different tag options

currently on the market. We would like to thank and acknowledge the support from Allflex, Leader Products and Shearwell Australia for both supporting our trial and providing tags.

MerinoLink supported the Sheep CRC Re-bid Application to extend the program for another 5 years (2014-19). MerinoLink has been involved in a number of the CRC projects and has access to new developments as part of our support agreement.

Project involvement includes the Genomic Flock Profile test and hosting RamSelect workshops. The Sheep CRC also support the MerinoLink annual conference by providing speakers and allowing access to current CRC developments.

8. Genomic Demonstration and Validation project (2013 – 2015)

MerinoLink was successful in securing funding from Australian Wool Innovation to demonstrate and validate the commercial use of the Genomics Tools developed by the Sheep CRC in a ram breeding operation. The 2011 drop ewes that have been bred as part of the Bluechip Livestock Sire Evaluations, and the 2012 drop rams from the Bluechip

Livestock Young Sire Program were used in this demonstration. Findings showed: 1. DNA parent tests provide excellent pedigree identification; ewe efficiency and syndicate data.

2. Commercial breeders should be confident when purchasing rams using ASBVs to achieve

a breeding objective; 3. The overall Ram Team Average remains stable over time.

9. Merino Wether Extension Project (2017 – 2020)

The Merino Wether Extension Project will value add to the existing Merino Lifetime Productivity (MLP) Project and Standard Sire Evaluation sites by measuring the post weaning and yearling meat traits of the 2016 MerinoLink MLP F1 wethers, and the adult wool and weight traits of the 2017 MerinoLink & Monaro Farming Systems Sire Evaluation (Yass) and the 2017 MLP F1 wethers. A total of 42 progeny groups and 40 Merino sires will be evaluated for additional traits. The three evaluations (mentioned above) have linkage to

other Standard Sire Evaluations and the Merino Lifetime Productivity (MLP) project sites.

The Merino Extension Project will assess the wether progeny for meat and wool traits at post weaning, yearling, hogget and adult stages to produce genetic and phenotypic comparisons. The data collected will also be used to generate a farming system report to highlight the profitability per head and per hectare under different breeding objectives.

MERINOLINK PROPOSED PROJECTS MerinoLink is constantly looking for opportunities to answer member and industry questions. The following project proposals have been developed from industry grass roots and MerinoLink is currently in the process of seeking funding to conduct the research and adoptions projects/trials.

6 Month Shearing Project (Proposal)

Background

Over the past ~10 years there has been an increased uptake of shearing sheep every 6 months, moving away from 12 monthly shearing. As the volume of clips move to 6 months shearing many producers are questioning if the practice of shearing every 6 months is economically viable; if there is a sustainable market for the increased premature shorn wool; and what the tangible benefits are. Many growers are not willing to consider the alternative time of shearing based solely on anecdotal evidence.

Purpose/Description

To measure and assess a mob of 1,000 Self Replacing Merino ewes over a four year period to compare the economic, production and animal health benefits of 6 months shearing compared to 12 months shearing intervals.

Objectives

1. To determine the economic value (cost benefit) of shearing every 6 months compared to a traditional 12 month shearing interval on a per head and per hectare basis using a rolling 5 year average wool price.

2. To determine what the production traits positives and negatives are of 6 months shearing compared to 12 months shearing on a per head and per hectare basis.

3. To measure the economic viability by measuring the price basis for the length difference.

4. To monitor and record the mob animal health differences between 6 months and 12 months shearing.

DNA Stimulation Project

Purpose/Description

The purpose of the MerinoLink DNA Stimulation project is to work with a group of seed stock and commercial breeders to increase their use of genetic and genomic tools currently available, with the aim to double genetic gain in line with the MLA’s National Livestock Genetic Consortium’s strategic direction by 2022.

Objectives

1. To increase the number of Merino ram breeders submitting full pedigree data to sheep genetics by 100% (greater than 95% full pedigree flocks) of the top tier. The impact will be to increase the accuracy of ASBV’s and genetic gain.

2. To increase the number of Merino ram breeders using genomic testing to select stud sires. The impact will be to improve accuracy and increase selection accuracy.

Page 10: 2018 MerinoLink Sponsorship PROSPE TUS...Sponsorship PROSPE TUS Engagement – Education - Exploration - Exchange Page 1 MerinoLink Limited hief Executive Officer - Sally Martin -

Page 9 MerinoLink Limited Chief Executive Officer – Sally Martin - M: 0400 782 477

E: [email protected] W: www.merinolink.com.au

3. To increase the number of Merino ram breeders exposure, and potential use of MateSel to maximise genetic gain.

4. To increase the number of commercial Merino breeders use of the Flock Profile test, and to test it as a benchmarking tool to assess their genetic progress, and target ram selection by incorporating the information in the RamSelect App.

5. To explore the use of the Flock Profile test by ram breeders and their clients to better tailor ram selection to client needs and measure changes in breeding programs over time.

6. To facilitate data collection and genomic testing to enhance the existing genomic reference population.

7. To test the concept for ram breeders to carry out genomic testing only, without phenotypic measurement, whilst being supported by an industry run reference flock that they are linked to (strategic linkage).

8. To provide an extension process to guide, facilitate and explore future opportunities with the project participants and mentor new service providers in this space.

MerinoLink Merino Lifetime Productivity F2 Progeny Project (Proposal)

Background

There has been an increase in the understanding and use of Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs) across the sheep industry. There is still some confusion with some commercial and ram breeders about the benefits of and how to use the ASBVs when selecting or purchasing rams. Sire Evaluations provide a physical demonstration of the impact one sire can have. This project will focus on the impact a single ram and a team of rams can have.

Purpose/Description

To use the F2 progeny from the 2016 Merino Lifetime Productivity (MLP) F1 ewes to demonstrate the production outcomes and resulting value from selecting Merino rams with higher clean fleece weight ASBVs. The F2 progeny will be a physical extension tool to demonstrate the production and economic differences between two groups of rams, to show the predicted outcomes verse actual outcomes.

Figure 1 – the predicted outcome for each ram team (High HCFW; Low HCFW)

Objectives

Compare the progeny from two groups of rams that have a similar combined economic index (Merino Production Plus) but differing ASBVs for hogget clean fleece weight (HCFW). High HCFW (23.0) and Low HCFW (6.5). The average HCFW ASBV for the High syndicate is currently in the top 5% of the Sheep Genetics database and the average HCFW ASBV for the Low syndicate is in the bottom 70% of the SG database.

To provide an economic comparison between the two ram groups expressed as dollars per head ($/head) and dollars per hectare ($/ha).

To investigate if the ASVBs have predicted how the progeny performs by measuring production differences (Fig. 1). Demonstrating the use and economic merit of using ASBVs in ram selection.

MerinoLink Conference – Hour of Power

An initiative to encourage the involvement of young people in the Sheep & Wool industry. The Hour of Power will be a fast-paced informative session presented by a range of young researchers, scholars and innovators.
