A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

We continue to provide “state-of-the-art, compassionate,

emergency care in an environment of academic excellence.”

And yes, that is our mission statement!

We continue to provide “state-of-the-art, compassionate, emergency care in an environment of academic excellence.” And yes, that is our mission statement!

After a change in our “provider-in-triage” process, we have had dramatic improvement in our “door-to-doc” time as well as our “left without being seen” rate and both have contributed to “best ever” patient satisfaction scores! Though we have been a STEMI center for many years, we are now a State Certied STEMI Center, the rst year that designation has been available in Missouri! Our Level I Trauma Center is busier than ever, too.

The residency program is outstanding. There are 11 residents per year in a 1, 2, 3 format. Amy Stubbs, M.D., the Program Director, Dr. Inboriboon, the Associate PD, and Drs. Hillman and O’Rourke, the Assistant PDs continue to do a great job training excellent residents. Amazingly, Dr. Stubbs has been PD for 4 years, now. It seems like just yesterday… Christina Mayne completed her rst year as Residency Program Coordinator. Jayna Ross has transitioned into the Student Clerkship Coordinator role. They keep the Department moving along like a nely oiled machine.

Dr. Hillman continues to run our mandatory Student EM Clerkship and now has help from Melanie Camejo, M.D. who is the Associate Clerkship Director. The Emergency Medicine Interest Group continues as the largest in the School. We continue to sponsor a one-day Emergency Medicine Simulation Experience for about 30 medical students each year as well as participate in the Great Plains Regional SAEM SimWars competition.

The faculty remains academically productive. We continue to be a site for the Emergency ID Net research group and, with the help of 3 full-time research coordinators, have several studies underway.

The faculty is also busy. Dr. Sullivan has completed her 4th year as Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and DIO (Designated Institutional Ofcial). Dr. Ellison the Associate Dean for Learning Initiatives. Dr. Hackman is the Chief Medical Information Ofcer for TMC and also the Chief Quality Ofcer. Dr. O’Rourke has had a great year improving ED Throughput as the ED Operations Director. Dr. Steele continues as the Chief Medical Ofcer for TMC and the Executive Medical Director of UHP (the faculty

practice plan) and has completed his 3rd year as Chief Operating Ofcer for TMC. Drs. Algren and Christian still work as toxicology consultants at Children’s Mercy Hospital and at the Kansas Poison Control Center and Dr. Algren continues as the Chair of the Selection Committee for the School of Medicine. Dr. Inboriboon is the Director for International Emergency Medicine Studies. Dr. Carney was appointed the EMS Medical Director for the City of Kansas City and is Chief of the EMS Section. Dr. Andrew Balk is the Director of Emergency Ultrasound.

Charlie Inboriboon, M.D. MPH was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship! He will be traveling to Thailand the rst half of 2019 to teach and train EM physicians there, mainly in simulation related areas. Strong Work! (And more to follow elsewhere in this newsletter.)

Under the leadership of Paul Ganss, the Program Director and Dr. Carney, the Medical Director, the EMS Education Program thrives. The Paramedic Program continues its accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs.

We continue to appreciate the support of our alumni. We still have several who work clinical shifts as “moonlighters” and several others who help administer the ever popular “mock” oral board examinations. We recently added Dr. Nick Smith and Dr. Jimmy DeMeo, both

graduates of the Class of 2018 to the roles of part-time staff docs. We all thank you for your efforts. We always are looking for moonlighters, so if you are interested, give me a call and let’s see what we can work out. I can almost promise that you will enjoy it and I know that the residents will be appreciative.

OPERATIONSED OPERATIONS

It has been a busy year serving as the Director of ED Operations. As a department, we cared for about 62,000 patients last year, of which 12,000 were admitted. We were on diversion for less than 18 hours the entire year and EMS rewarded us with 15,000 patients.  In October, we changed the priorities of the Provider-in-Triage and our Left Without Being Seen dropped to less than 3%.  For the year, we averaged 4.8% LWBS – a signicant accomplishment. Our Door-to-Doctor time also averaged 25 minutes for the year – another goal met. In the next year, the Operations Committee will continue to look for ways to decrease the length of stay for admitted and discharged patients.

The addition of Dr. Camejo and coverage provided by part-timers did a lot to help with department throughput, patient care and overall well-being of the attendings. We’ve been spoiled by the double coverage all day.

We have added some equipment to the department; including an OMFS dental abscess kit and DuCanto suction catheters, which have improved provider satisfaction and patient care. Suggested improvements to our electronic medical record have been made to limit the number of providers who die deaths by a thousand clicks.

It’s been a fun year and I look forward to working with everyone to accomplish more things in the next year.

Kevin O’Rourke, MDOperations Director and Assistant Program Director

RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Another exceptional year in the books for the UMKC Emergency Medicine Residency! Additional APP and faculty double coverage in the department, supported by Truman Medical Center, continues to improve the educational and clinical experience of our residents and our ability to care for the community we serve.

Some residency highlights from this past year include: • Our popular Annual Wellness Day, which included Dr. Rob Lam (2004) returning to discuss Post-residency wellness, followed by medical trivia and entertainment by the 5 and 2 Crew featuring Dr. Tony Toigo (2018) on guitar/vocals and Dr. Zack Petry (2018) on drums.

• A special holiday conference at Diastole including holiday themed didactics, a pot-luck lunch, and a musical gift from Drs. Kirk Roberts (1991), Sean Mark (2020) and Ashley Olson (2020).

• Hosting special guest and presenter at Senior Research day, the legendary Dr. Judith Tintinalli.

• EMS/Wilderness Day at Swope Park led by Drs. Tom Hindsley (2015), Tony Toigo (2018), Charlie Spencer (2019), and Liliya Kraynov (2019). Activities included a camp-out, a multi-casualty simulation, and evacuation demonstrations.

• Ladies’ night and Man day; both interestingly included ax-throwing.

Nothing like throwing sharp objects together to relieve stress and build camaraderie!

Accolades for 2017-2018 include: • Dr. Taylor Neff (2019) received the UMKC Outstanding Resident award

• Dr. Jeff Beckett (2018) received the SAEM Teaching Award

• Dr. Amanda Augustine (2019) was elected as Vice-president of the UMKC Housestaff Council

• Dr. Jim DeMeo (2018) was appointed advisor to the American Osteopathic Association’s Bureau of Emerging Leadership which represents all osteopathic medical students, residents and new physicians in practice. He was also appointed as a member of the Standards Review Coalition– American Osteopathic Association; serving as the sole resident responsible for reviewing the current accreditation standards of osteopathic medical schools.

The quality and commitment of our faculty and residents continues to be a tremendous source of inspiration and pride for me. Never has that been more evident than during our recent 10-year RRC Site Visit. Our whole team pitched in for this event and it was a pleasure to be able to highlight all the great things

we have accomplished. Special thanks to Ms. Mayne and Ms. Ross for their tireless preparation and dedication.

As always, the residents love getting to know our alumni who have participated in didactics, panel discussions, Mock Oral Boards, and clinical shifts. Our faculty really enjoys catching up with you too. Thanks so much to all of you for helping us carry on our tradition!

NEWSWORTHY UPDATESDr. Go Appointed To Special Purpose Exam Oversight CommitteeThe Federation of State Medical Boards and National Board of Medical Examiners have appointed Steven Go, M.D., professor of emergency medicine, to serve on a newly formed Special Purpose Examination (SPEX) oversight committee. The committee will manage a special purpose exam for physicians who currently hold, or who have previously held, a valid, unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States or Canadian jurisdiction.

It is responsible for a wide range of exam topics, such as selecting appropriate testing methods; evaluating and approving blueprints, objectives, and test material formats; adopting test polices, and oversight of a research agenda and other uses of the exam. The SPEX is provided for physicians seeking licensure reinstatement or reactivation, or those

involved in disciplinary proceedings that determine a need for evaluation. The oversight committee is a new group that assumes the responsibilities of the governing and program committees of the Post-Licensure Assessment System.

Dr. Go’s appointment ofcially began in January 2018. His new role is a continuation of his interest in medical student and physician competency assessment and credentialing issues. He is also serving on the United States Medical Licensing Examination management committee that is responsible for all USMLE step examinations. In addition, Go has also served as a board member for the National Board of Medical Examiners.

Matthew Gratton, MD, FACEP, Receives MOCEP’s Lifetime Achievement AwardMatthew Gratton, MD, FACEP, was selected to receive the 2018 Missouri College of Emergency Physicians’ (MOCEP) Lifetime Achievement Award. He was nominated by Christine Sullivan, MD, FACEP, and Nicholas Smith, DO, both of University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine.

Dr. Gratton is Professor and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Truman Medical Center/University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Medicine. He is a graduate of Saint Louis University School of Medicine, and completed his residency program at Truman Medical Center.

“Leader, role model, mentor, devoted and commitment” are just a few words used to

describe Dr. Gratton by his nominators. His devotion to emergency medicine for more than 35 years can be seen in the hundreds of students and residents he has mentored in his career. However, his efforts don’t end there. He has been instrumental in the development of clinical, teaching and scholarship skills of faculty members that have led to their promotion within the School of Medicine. He was also instrumental in obtaining research support and development for residents and faculty; and through his vision for the department, has implemented mid-level providers and provides ongoing mentoring to ensure outstanding patient care.

Dr. Gratton’s efforts extend outside of the School of Medicine, and include serving as an advocate for emergency medical services (EMS) system within Kansas City, including as Medical Director for the city based ambulance system for a number of years, and spearheading the development of a paramedic training program. He served as a US Navy Reserve

ofcer for 31 years during which time he has provided emergency care to our military in the United States, Japan and Iraq. Among his military honors includes the Legion of Merit and recipient of the Bronze Star.

It is the honor of MOCEP to provide our inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award to an outstanding emergency department physician. Criteria to be nominated for this award require the nominee to be a MOCEP member who has at least 25 years of service to emergency medicine, has devoted their professional life to the improvement of this specialty, and has played an active role in MOCEP.

MEDWARS 2018

Thomas Hindsley, MDI am pleased to relate that we have had another successful year at the Medical Wilderness Adventure Race series. This past March we sent a team of 3 EM-bound UMKC students (Jordann Dhuse, Maggie Kirwin, and Allie Reinbold) to the Mid-Atlantic MedWAR in Newport News, Virginia. The “HAPE Apes” ran a 15-mile race of orienteering, mountain biking, and canoeing, completing wilderness medicine scenarios and knowledge questions along the way, and came in 5th place out of over 20 teams. This is a tremendous accomplishment, and demonstration of the strength of our School of Medicine & EM Residency. Be sure to congratulate these future EM docs on representing us so well in competition!

DEPARTMENT UPDATESCHIEF RESIDENTS

Taylor Ne, MDI was born and raised in a rural area outside of Wichita, KS. After high school, I attended The University of Kansas majoring in microbiology. During my time in college I worked at a local hospital as an admissions representative in the emergency department where I found my love for emergency medicine. Additionally, while at KU in Lawrence I met a cool girl named Bre in Spanish class and convinced her to marry me. I continued my medical training at The University of Kansas School of Medicine at a satellite campus in Wichita, KS. During my 4th year of medical school I was able to spend a month rotating through Truman’s emergency department.

During that time, I was thrilled to experience rsthand the passion for emergency medicine found here. As a student and subsequent interviewee I

was astounded at how welcomed I felt at Truman. After interviewing across the Midwest, I could not shake the feeling that Truman is where I belong. My time as a resident has only continued to solidify that Truman is an excellent place to train. I am thrilled that I will be serving as a Chief Resident this year. Specically, I am excited about the opportunity to be involved in the residency program development, teaching junior residents, and assisting in medical student education. When not at the hospital, my wife and I enjoy being outdoors. One of our favorite pastimes is camping and boating at any lake we can get to. We are thoroughly excited to be living in Kansas City not only because of all the activities the city provides, but also because it is not difcult to escape to the countryside or to the lake.

Kevin Tran, MDWhile I was born in southern California, I claim Texas as my true heritage. I moved there from a young age and never realized how Texan I was until I left for residency. I spent my formative years in Houston where I attended Rice University as an undergraduate and UT-Houston subsequently for medical school. Admittedly, Emergency Medicine was not on my radar at all and I had actually applied for a residency in OB/GYN. However, I slowly recognized that EM was what I was meant to do and revoked my application for OB/GYN late in the game. After medical school, I ended up at the University of Cincinnati as a preliminary Internal

Medicine resident. During my rst intern year, I was nally able to apply for an Emergency Medicine residency and ultimately matched here at UMKC. With my sister in town, who has been here since her Pediatrics residency and now works as an attending at Children’s Mercy, Kansas City already felt like home. Fortunately, my wife was also able to join me in Kansas City as she is now in her second year as a Family Medicine resident at Research Medical Center. We’ve loved our time in Kansas City and have made a lot of wonderful friends. When not working, I enjoy watching movies, playing bar trivia, and exploring the city and restaurants.I was extremely humbled and honored to have been selected as Chief resident this year. I know I have large shoes to ll and hope to continue the tradition of giving my all to improve an already outstanding residency program.

Amanda Augustine, MDI was born and raised in St. Louis, MO

and moved to Kansas City in 2010 to attend the UMKC School of Medicine BA/MD program. At the end of medical school, I couldn’t imagine leaving Kansas City and the Truman Emergency Medicine Program. I knew that I would receive the best EM training at Truman, with broad exposure to trauma and a variety of pathology. We also have a talented and energetic group of

attendings and residents that make you feel welcome as soon as you walk into the department. This year, I am ecstatic to be able to serve the program as a chief resident. I look forward to becoming more heavily involved in medical student education, resident recruitment, and program development. Outside of the work, I enjoy exploring everything that Kansas City has to offer. Even after living here for nearly a decade, I continue to discover new and exciting experiences within the city. I love attending sporting events of all types, First Fridays, and taking my two small dogs to the park.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE CLERKSHIP

This year we welcomed Dr. Melanie Camejo to our leadership team as the Associate Clerkship Director. Our department continues to provide students with a strong clinical and non-clinical learning experience- our clerkship is rated very positively by our rotating medical students. We continue to utilize iPads to promote independent, just-in-time mobile learning- the iPad implementation and related research project has been presented nationally at the annual Council of Residency Directors (CORD) in Emergency Medicine meetings in 2016 and 2018. Our clerkship non-clinical offerings continue to evolve and expand. We are now offering multiple simulation and case-based activities, both of which are highly rated by students. For 2018-2019 our goals include: increasing the frequency of direct observations of student clinical encounters and adding an evidence-based medicine and free-open access medicine (FOAM) portion to our curriculum.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE INTEREST GROUP

The emergency medicine interest group (EMIG) remains one of the largest and most active interest groups at the UMKC School of Medicine with approximately 120 members. We continue to recruit 1-2 UMKC EMIG students per year to our residency program and we currently have 5 UMKC graduates in our residency program. Faculty and residents continue to contribute to regularly held EMIG workshops, SimWars training, and our annual EMIG procedural conference.

The EMIG SimWars competition team remains active. In a SimWars competition, teams comprised of students work together to manage simulated emergencies. The students have 8 minutes to assess, diagnose, manage and disposition their patient.

The team competes each Fall at the regional SAEM Great Plains Meeting. In 2016 the team won 1st place at the regional conference.

This year we continue to work to strengthen our EMIG’s hold as the largest, most active interest group

at the school of medicine! For more information or if you are interested in being a guest alumni lecturer or contributing to our annual conference contact us at: [email protected].

EMS EDUCATION PROGRAM

The UMKC EMS Education program continues to serve the community by providing competent, entry- level Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Paramedic candidates to the EMS system in the Kansas City region and beyond. The UMKC Paramedic program was proudly awarded accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of the Allied Health Professions (CAAHEP) on July 2, 2016.

The Paramedic program is being facilitated by Lead Instructor Bill Gulick. Our EMT program continues to thrive under Lead Instructor Virginia Wilson. Both have experience as EMS Educators and multiple years of varied professional experience. Ms. Wilson is also in charge of clinical coordination.

In June, Instructors and students from the Paramedic program again traveled to Hutchinson, Kansas to take part in the Hutchinson Community College Paramedic Field Operations. This two-day event puts paramedic students from multiple programs together in teams to respond to simulated calls and multiple victim incidents.

The EMS Education program continues to work with our clinical partners including Truman Medical Centers, Research Medical Center, Liberty Hospital, and eld agencies American Medical Response, Excelsior Springs Fire Department, Grandview Fire Department, Pleasant Hill Fire Protection District, and Riverside Fire Department to provide valuable practical experience to our EMT and Paramedic

students. The education provided by these afliates and their staff is essential to the successful outcomes for our students and greatly appreciated. In 2017, we displayed our simulation and training ambulance at the Missouri EMS Expo in Branson where Dr. Carney has annually participated in the “EMS Physicians Lightening Rounds.”

DEAR UMKC EMERGENCY MEDICINE ALUMNI,

Since 1973, the UMKC Emergency Medicine residency program has continued to educate and train emergency medicine physicians to provide comprehensive medical care and has fostered physician leaders in academic and community programs across this country. From this solid foundation, our current program faculty and residents continually strive to meet this high standard that has been set by our predecessors; ex traditione, exellentia.

One of our goals as a residency program is to foster our alumni connections and expand our alumni network to promote the strength and continued growth of our residency program. Over the last year we alumni have had the opportunity to catch up at the MOCEP’s Annual Reception at the Scientic Assembly. In addition, we would like to thank the many alumni that have contributed to our didactics through guest lectures, career panels, and oral board

preparation. We would also like to thank our alumni for their continued nancial donations to the residency program.

Many of you lled out our recent resident survey and some of your updates are included. If you are interested in contributing an update, then please email [email protected]. Take a look at our Website or follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter (@umkcEM).

SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY2017-2018 year was another productive year for ED research. The

faculty and residents had multiple publications, abstracts, and

presentations over the course of the year. Ongoing projects include

the areas of: infectious disease, clinical operations, EMS, and

resident education; several of which are grant funded. Please see the

full list of studies for further details.

We continue to be active members in EMERGEncy ID Net: A CDC funded emergency department–based emerging infections sentinel network. Urinary and soft-tissue infection pathogens are current studies.

Our residents continue to do a scholarly project and our graduating PGY-3 residents recently presented their projects on Senior Research Day, with special guest Dr. Judith Tintinalli who also spoke on “Serendipity.” Dr. Tony Toigo won the Elenbass Award for the most exceptional presentation. All the seniors did an outstanding job and six had abstracts accepted at the UMKC Annual Vijay Babu Rayudu Quality and Patient Safety day. “Are Women diagnosed with ACS Under-triaged?” by Drs. Amy Stubbs, Jason Hurt, Monica Gaddis and Sal Rios MS-6 was awarded outstanding student presentation. Our PGY-1 class also develops a case report for presentation at an annual “Case Report Day” that began in the 2014-2015 academic year. Dr. Ashley Borden was awarded the Gaddis Case Report Award for 2018 for her excellent presentation on Fitz-Hugh

Curtis Syndrome. Additionally, Dr. James Tiehen (2020) presented on the Effect of Relaxed Firework Legislation on Fireworks Injuries 2004-2014 at the annual EAST Scientic Assembly.

Happily, Dr. Monica Gaddis continues to enhance and guide our scholarly activities and Journal Club. She has had a very busy year helping us in addition to presenting at multiple international EM conferences. We have also had the good fortune to add Ms. Lori Wilkerson as a third study coordinator; they provide support for IRB submissions, study enrollment, and all things research. UMKC Emergency Medicine Interest Group students continue to assist in several departmental studies. We look forward to another productive year with their continued involvement and greatly appreciate all the contributions made to our faculty and resident research this past year.
