April Showers Bring May Flowers Let’s hope T.S. Elliot isn’t correct when he said “April is the cruelest month”. We are so happy to look forward to green sprouts, buds, and birds. Notice I say “look forward to” as it is still pretty snowy here. As we look forward to seasonal changes and the warm breezes they bring we are faced with tasks of a new fiscal year. While it appears the Title III funded programs are being funded again, we are looking at proposed cuts to the Title V employment program and hoping that our Nutrition funding stays at current levels or better. We were informed by the Secretary of Aging, Teresa Osborne, that
we will be receiving much needed additional Protective Services funds. Our Agency alone has seen over 32% increase in the past two years. To provide coverage we have done some cross training with staff and reassigned some duties. These additional funds will allow us to shift funds to where they are needed with our in home personal care and adult day care programs to name a few. Our new Ombudsman provider has started. You will be seeing Serving Seniors, Inc. You may remember Bernadette Jones, she is returning as our Ombudsman and will be coordinating the volunteers and their visits to our long term care facilities. Want to learn about the Ombudsman
program and make a difference in someone’s life? Contact her at 570-344-7190. Anyone with volunteering interests can always call the main AAA office as well 570-775-5550.
April is Earth Awareness Month
The Earth Month Network has developed this year’s theme as:
"Plastic Pollution” Toothbrushes are just a single example. In the United States alone it is estimat-ed that between 850 million, and over a billion toothbrushes, representing more than 50 million pounds of waste, are discarded and end up in landfills every single year. Check out some of our local resources for recycling, reusing, and repurposing. Composting is a simple way to divert organic waste from landfills and incinerators and create a fantastic, organic soil additive. The EPA estimates that 26% of US municipal solid waste is organic materials that can easily be composted. We have not heard from anyone regarding the Diabetes prevention program we are collaborating with and the Area Health Education Center. If anyone has been told by their MD that they have an elevated Blood Sugar or are newly diagnosed we want you!!! Contact Kathy for our new group meetings. (if you have been struggling with diabetes already, you are also welcome to participate in the program) Who was president when the first Earth Day occurred? (hint: 1970)

The Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps low income families pay their heating bills. LIHEAP is a grant. You do not have to repay it. LIHEAP offers both cash and crisis grants. Cash grants help families pay their heating bills. The one-time payment is sent directly to your utility company or fuel provider, and it will be credited on your bill. Cash grants range from $200 to $1000 and are based on household size, income, and fuel type. Crisis grants may be available if you have an emergency situation and are in jeopardy of losing your heat. You can receive more than one Crisis grant, as necessary, during the season until the maximum benefit of $500 is reached. Apply online www.compass.state.pa.us or request an application by calling the Statewide LIHEAP Hotline 1-866-857-7095.
