History of San Jose Country Club and Pool
Established in 1899, San Jose Country Club is the fourth oldest golf club in Northern California. The course is truly unique to the Bay Area. Tom Nicoll,
a Scottish-born professional and the club’s first Head Golf Professional, designed the course in 1912. John Harbottle, a classic golf course architect who
likened the course to Gleneagles and noted that the course was “a touch of Scotland,” renovated it 88 years later. In 2013, course architect Bill Love
completed a bunker restoration project and also renovated the green complexes on the 4th and 15th holes.
The San Jose Country Club Pool has been active for as long as anyone can remember. The pool featured many programs, boasted tradition through events and always presented an inviting atmosphere. Some programs in the past were: Swim lessons, Father -Son races, Mother-Daughter races, and even Intra-club swim meets. For example, in 1964, there was a diving exhibition by no one
other than Barry Sheppard. The well known pool manager throughout the late 1950’s and 1960’s , John Henry, invented The San Jose Country Club’s most
popular game played today, “Greasy Watermelon.” To this day, the pool continues to keep the atmosphere and tradition alive.
San Jose Country Club is known for its love of the game and has a history steeped in tradition and golfing honors. The Club is a founding member of the NCGA and has turned out many champions through the years. Eddie Duino, our most famous Head Golf Professional, was “Club Professional of the Year” in 1959. Ernie Pieper, who’s swing was most compared to Bobby Jones, and of whom Jones purportedly referred to as “the man with a near-perfect swing,” won 15 Santa Clara County Championships. Through the years, the long list of golf
pros and celebrities who have enjoyed our course include Joe DiMaggio, Ben Hogan, Walter Hagen, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Johnny Miller and Fred Couples. The club’s list of honorary members include golf professionals Roger Maltbie, Joseph Bramlett, and Club Professional Gary Plato, Congressman Don Edwards, and Northern California Golf Hall of Fame members Ken
Venturi and Louis “Hank” Lucente.
