This evening we highlight student achievements over the past year, and recognize strong partnerships with employers who provide high quality opportunities for Concordia’s talent.

Work integrated learning is one of the best ways to teach for the emerging future. It adds measurable benefit to students’ career development, the organizations they work for, and the larger community.

We are proud to share our eager and innovative students throughout Quebec and around the world. Concordia thanks industry partners who create such meaningful experiences for our students.

Ce soir, nous saluons les réalisations de nos étudiants et étudiantes au cours de la dernière année. Nous soulignons également nos solides partenariats avec des employeurs qui offrent des occasions de grande qualité aux talents de Concordia.

L’apprentissage en milieu de travail est certes une des meilleures façons d’adapter l’enseignement aux besoins émergents du marché. Mais il est aussi très bénéfique au développement de carrière des étudiants, aux organisations qui les emploient de même qu’à la collectivité dans son ensemble.

Nos étudiants sont enthousiastes et innovateurs. Je suis fier de voir rayonner leurs compétences partout au Québec et dans le monde entier. Nos partenaires créent à leur intention des expériences enrichissantes, et nous les en remercions vivement.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR • DU DIRECTEUR

It has been an exciting year at the Co-op. The Institute has grown and is playing a crucial role in university life. We have more students, more employers and even new programs available to students. Concordia is taking its place as a frontrunner in co-operative education and work-integrated learning.

Experiential learning has always been part of Concordia’s DNA. As early as the 1950s Concordia’s academic precursor, Sir George Williams, offered “Earn while you learn” programs in retailing. Sixty years later Concordia provides a wide spectrum of work related activities for students including co-op, industrial experience and the new ACE programs with work term opportunities in Montreal, all over Canada and around the globe. Real-world experience transforms academic education into experience that launches careers.

Thanks to all of you who have contributed to our students’ success. I also sincerely thank all the individual and corporate donors whose contributions have made this another record-breaking year for student awards.

At the end of July, Concordia University will host the Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning National Conference (CEWIL). Under the theme of “Embracing Change” we will welcome work integrated professionals and employers from across

Cette année a été des plus stimulantes pour l’enseignement coopératif à Concordia. L’institut poursuit sa croissance et joue un rôle crucial dans la vie à l’Université. Nous comptons davantage d’étudiants et d’employeurs, et nous offrons même de nouveaux programmes. Concordia se taille une place parmi les chefs de file de l’enseignement coopératif et de l’apprentissage en milieu de travail.

L’apprentissage expérientiel a toujours fait partie de l’ADN de l’Université. Dès les années 1950, l’un des établissements fondateurs de Concordia, la Sir George Williams University, offrait déjà des programmes d’apprentissage rémunéré dans le domaine de la vente au détail. Soixante ans plus tard, l’Université propose aux étudiants toute une gamme d’occasions de travail, dont l’enseignement coopératif, les stages en entreprise, et les nouveaux programmes ACE avec possibilités de stage non seulement à Montréal, mais aussi partout au Canada et dans le monde. Concordia conjugue expérience pratique et formation universitaire pour offrir à ses étudiants et étudiantes un tremplin vers une carrière.

Merci à vous tous d’avoir contribué à la réussite de nos étudiants. Je tiens en outre à remercier sincèrement les personnes et les entreprises qui, grâce à leurs dons, ont permis d’établir une autre année record pour les prix décernés aux étudiants.

Fin juillet, l’Université Concordia accueillera le colloque national d’Enseignement coopératif et apprentissage en milieu de travail (ECAMT). Sous le thème « S’ouvrir au changement », cet événement réunira des professionnels de l’apprentissage en milieu de travail et des employeurs de tout le Canada souhaitant lier connaissance, partager leur expertise et échanger des pratiques exemplaires.

Félicitations aux étudiants et aux employeurs qui reçoivent une distinction ce soir, aux participants du salon des étudiants ainsi qu’aux membres du personnel, aux universitaires et aux bénévoles qui ont travaillé si fort pour faire de cette soirée un succès. Nous sommes impatients d’amorcer

NADIA BHUIYAN

Vice-Provost, Partnerships and Experiential Learning

Nadia Bhuiyan is the Vice-Provost of Partnerships and Experiential Learning (EL). She is also a professor in the department of Mechanical, Industrial and Aerospace Engineering. Within her mandate, Dr. Bhuiyan champions and grows partnerships with external organizations while also expanding opportunities for EL in other forms. As she says, “I’m a strong advocate for building the type of collaborations that grant students first-hand experiences in their chosen careers and pathways to actively contribute to the evolution of our city.

“Experiential learning is a central part of the learning experience at Concordia, and Co-op is the EL opportunity of choice for thousands of students. Congratulations to the incredible Co-op team that runs the Institute, to the employers for offering our students life-changing opportunities to put their knowledge to work, and of course, to the students who do an outstanding job at applying their education in challenging, real-world settings.”

Vice-rectrice exécutive adjointe aux partenariats et à l’apprentissage expérientiel

Vice-rectrice exécutive adjointe aux partenariats et à l’apprentissage expérientiel, Nadia Bhuiyan est aussi professeure au Département de génie mécanique, industriel et aérospatial. Dans le cadre de son mandat, Mme Bhuiyan travaille à établir et à développer des partenariats avec des organismes externes tout en élargissant les possibilités d’apprentissage expérientiel sous toutes ses formes. « Je suis une ardente défenseure des collaborations qui offrent aux étudiantes et étudiants des expériences pratiques dans le domaine de leur choix, afin qu’ils contribuent activement à l’évolution de notre ville », affirme Nadia Bhuiyan.

« L’apprentissage expérientiel occupe une place centrale dans l’expérience d’apprentissage à Concordia, poursuit-elle, et l’enseignement coopératif représente dans cette optique un choix par excellence pour des milliers d’étudiants. Félicitations à l’incroyable équipe de l’Institut coop, aux employeurs qui offrent à nos stagiaires des expériences transformatrices et, bien sûr, aux étudiants et étudiantes qui réussissent avec brio à appliquer leur savoir dans un contexte stimulant et concret. »

SAMUEL SHULMAN

Co-op Student of the Year

Samuel Shulman is a recent graduate of Concordia’s Building Engineering Co-op program. Samuel completed his first internship at Kingston Byers as an assistant project manager on several construction projects. He went on to do his second internship at Deloitte as an analyst on the Capital Projects team. Proving himself a valuable member of the team, he was invited to stay on for his third internship, during which he played an important role in the preparation of a $1.5M construction claim.

In addition to maintaining top grades in his program, Samuel has also been an active ambassador of Co-op in his role as a Welcome Crew Mentor with Concordia’s Student Success Centre. He also served as the president of the Concordia Dragon Boat Club and the VP Academic of the Concordia University Building Engineering Society. In his spare time, Samuel enjoys searching for new additions to his record collection.

SAMUEL SHULMAN

Étudiant coop de l’année

Récemment diplômé du programme coop en génie du bâtiment de l’Université Concordia, Samuel Shulman a effectué son premier stage chez l’entrepreneur général Kingston Byers. Là, il a participé à plusieurs chantiers de construction à titre de gestionnaire adjoint de projets. Son deuxième stage s’est déroulé au cabinet comptable Deloitte : il occupait le poste d’analyste au sein du groupe Projets d’infrastructure et d’investissement. Considéré comme un précieux coéquipier, il a été invité par l’entreprise à y accomplir son troisième stage. À cette occasion, il a joué un rôle déterminant dans la préparation d’une réclamation de 1 500 000 $ liée à des travaux de construction.

En plus d’obtenir d’excellents résultats dans le cadre de son cursus, Samuel Shulman s’est révélé être un ambassadeur dynamique de l’Institut coop. Il a notamment mentoré l’équipe d’accueil du Centre de réussite universitaire de Concordia. En outre, il a exercé les fonctions de président du club de bateau-dragon de l’Université et de vice-président aux affaires scolaires de l’Association des étudiants en génie du bâtiment. Dans ses moments de loisir, il aime fureter chez les disquaires en vue d’enrichir sa collection de disques.
