Survey Method The First South Branch Oconto River trend site is typi- cally surveyed on a 2-year rotation since 2007. Annual surveys were completed in the 1990s. Sampling gear consisted of a towed barge streamshocker. All cap- tured trout were identified to species and measured for length. Catch per effort (CPE) is an indirect method of meas- uring fish population relative abundance. For all trout surveys we typically quantify CPE by the number and size of trout captured per mile of stream. 2018 Stream Survey Report FIRST SOUTH BRANCH OCONTO RIVER Trend (WBIC 484700) Oconto County Habitat and Access The watershed is primarily forested and within the Chequamegon- Nicolet National Forest. Several road crossings provide access. However, there are large seg- ments of stream within the National Forest that do not have road cross- ings nearby and would require walking or wading to access secluded areas of the stream. Three habitat improvement projects were completed with funding by Trout Stamp dollars and Green Bay, Oconto, and Marinette Trout Un- limited chapters. Bank covers were installed in the 1980s downstream from CTH W. Brush bundles, digger logs, and boulders were installed downstream from STH 64 in the 1990s. Brush bundles were installed in 2016 to provide additional habitat and improve fishability downstream of CTH W. The trend station contains bank covers and brush bundles. Introduction and Survey Objectives The First South Branch Oconto River is a Class I and II trout stream consisting of 21.7 miles of trout water in Oconto County. Average width is 26 feet. Brook trout is the dominant salmonid with low numbers of brown trout found. Brook trout yearling and fingerlings have been regularly stocked in past years. No trout are planned to be stocked beginning in 2019 because naturally- reproducing trout populations are present. Objectives of the trend survey are to monitor relative abundance and size structure of trout. Habitat and Access • The watershed is primarily forested and within the Chequamegon-

Nicolet National Forest. • Several road crossings provide access. However, there are large seg-

ments of stream within the National Forest that do not have road cross-ings nearby and would require walking or wading to access secluded areas of the stream.

• Three habitat improvement projects were completed with funding by Trout Stamp dollars and Green Bay, Oconto, and Marinette Trout Un-limited chapters. Bank covers were installed in the 1980s downstream from CTH W. Brush bundles, digger logs, and boulders were installed downstream from STH 64 in the 1990s. Summary

• The 2018 survey indicated book trout density for all sizes is good, at 513 per mile.

• A total of 313 brook trout ranging in length from 1.9 to 11.4 inches were sampled. Average length was 5.0 inches.

• A total of 13 brown trout (6.1 to 11.3 inches) were sampled. There appears to be low natural reproduction of brown trout in this stream.

• Brook trout > 5” remained stable at 271 per mile, compared to 267 per mile in 2016.

• Brook trout > 8” (legal size for harvest) improved to 45 per mile compared to 36 per mile in 2016.

• Brook trout young of year relative abundance is at 161 per mile and has improved each year since 2011.

• The overall health of the brook trout fishery in the First South Branch Oconto River is very good. Successful reproduction and recruitment

of brook trout was evident from the length frequency of fish collected. Moderate numbers of legal size (8 inch and over) brook trout were present.

• Surveys were completed in 2009 at five other locations in addition to CTH W. Those locations are Whiffen Lane, Pat Lake Road, STH 64,

STH 32, and Tar Dam Road. The next trend survey at CTH W is planned for 2020 and the next survey at other access locations, listed above, is also planned for 2020.
