Welcome 2018 STRUTDance Program

As the Chair of STRUT Dance - the national centre for choreographic development based in Perth WA - it is with immense pride and excitement that I welcome you into our 2018 program.

At present, there are very few contemporary dance organisations in Australia that can support a full-time ensemble and enable choreographers to rigorously develop their craft. We are therefore a nation of agile, independent artists, hunting and gathering opportunity Australia wide. And STRUT Dance is all about opportunity - the opportunity for artists to engage with national and international leaders and collaborate across art forms so that they can develop, articulate and ultimately platform their own choreographic voices. This is a unique model of opportunity in Australia, and I am not shy to say that what STRUT offers is indeed a unique model of opportunity internationally.

We begin the year by strengthening our relationship with the Perth Festival.

STRUT regularly hosts the Festival’s own performing artists through their Connect program. 2018 sees the inclusion of one of our own Master Workshop deliveries within the Festival’s own Perth Works program - Punchdrunk’s Maxine Doyle, whose three-year partnership with STRUT is now reaching its most thrilling phase.

The Maxine Doyle program plays in the exciting space where dance collides with theatre - site, character and a proximity to audiences - an intoxicating and compelling combination for any artist to interrogate. This physical theatre program is a perfect counterpoint to the more dance focused methodology that underpins those of Hofesh Shechter and Crystal Pite. These two world leaders are now operating at the top of their game and we are truly honoured to be expanding these partnerships into the future.

It is wonderful to witness STRUT welcoming actors, directors and physical theatre practitioners into the membership, alongside our dance artists and with that, begin to address an ever increasing hybridization of dance and theatre territories.

STRUT’s Collaborations Program further explores this hybrid conversation with Australian greats Stephanie Lake, composer Robin Fox and cross art-form practitioner Jo Lloyd - all unpacking their long-standing artistic and collaborative relationships for our members.

This year we are very excited to launch a new scholarship program with The Feilman Foundation – The Feilman Foundation Pathways to Excellence – which will provide scholarship opportunities into the STRUT program for recently graduated artists.

STRUT’s own level of excellence and impact is both reliant upon and a testament to our ongoing WA partnerships with TURA New Music, the State Theatre Centre of WA, Subiaco Arts Centre and those companies and organisations around Australia and the world that help make our offer so unique and our community so vibrant and supportive. New into this mix from 2018 is Community Arts Network, a partner organization helping us to invite the multicultural and indigenous voice into the room.

STRUT Director Paul Selwyn Norton has himself recently returned from an extensive foray into the Indonesian dance sector with the intention of building reciprocal pathways of access with our nearest neighbour.

Add to that the myriad of development, residency and performance outcomes from our members and without a doubt, STRUT is packing serious punches in 2018. From global phenomenon Hofesh Shechter to our public class participants, from the Perth Festival to our own King Street Arts Centre studios, from all over the world to our proud city of Perth – what a scale and what an offer.

And it is with that offer that I invite you, our trusted members, artists and supporters on this innovative and inspiring journey with STRUT Dance.

An introduction to STRUT DanceA program of internationally benchmarked training, collaboration and performance opportunities unique in Australia.

BODY

STRUT offers sustained exposure to world-class dance techniques and choreographic methodology to enrich the body’s range of practice and ignite and inspire development. Usually quarantined to major dance organisations, these artists and their work are now available, as choreographic models of excellence, to the independent dance sector exclusively through STRUT.

2018 will witness a deepening of our partnerships with some of the most pertinent and visionary artists around Australia and the world -

Crystal Pite / Kidd Pivot (CA)Hofesh Shechter (IS/UK)Maxine Doyle (UK)Stephanie Lake (AU)

Sustained exposure to these techniques, as core ongoing training, will be supplemented by a focus on current contemporary technique, physical theatre disciplines and improvisation from the likes of Jo Lloyd (AU), Robin Fox (AU), Damian Jalet(BE), Michael Clark (UK) and KylePage (AU). The latter artists as part of our ongoing relationship with the Perth Festival’s Connect program.

COLLABORATION

Key to a choreographer’s development is learning how to collaborate with other artists in readiness for the stage. We provide the resources, the space and the leadership to coach those artists into asking the right questions.

STRUT has developed a dynamic and responsive program that builds skills in collaboration. In partnership with the State Theatre Centre of WA and the Subiaco Arts Centre, STRUT continues to provide pathways to encourage future collaboration across all stage art forms. The 2018 program will see many kinds of innovative collisions between choreography, music, text, improvisation and dramaturgy.

PERFORMANCE

Throughout the year, choreographers are offered the opportunity to develop and present work with production values at all levels. For maximum impact, the majority of these performance opportunities segue straight from training or collaborative programs directly into the public realm, where key learnings can be implemented directly back into practice. From studio showings to full evening presentations at the State Theatre Centre of WA, all manner of platforms, sites and festivals are available for expression.

This year will see a further development of STRUT’s exclusive partnership with Maxine Doyle. Maxine Doyle is one-half of Punchdrunk, pioneers in site-based dance theatre performances the world over. Punchdrunk design large scale, immersive experiences for promenading audiences. Sleep No More and The Drowned Man are now cited as some of the most attended and critically lauded performances in recent history. The outcome of this first development will be presented in the 2018 Perth Festival / Perth Works program.

It was like being in London, Madrid or New York. How does this kind of brilliance happen here in Perth outside of the Perth Festival? I am coming back tomorrow and bringing everyone I can with me. They have to see this show!

One Flat Thing, Reproduced audience member

STRUT Dance offers independent choreographers, dance and physical theatre practitioners the possibility to engage with national and international masters, the chance to work with collaborative partners in the making of their own performance, and the opportunity to put their work in front of a willing and informed audience at all levels of expression.

As a national organisation now operating globally, STRUT’s programs are open to all and operate on four levels:

BODY, COLLABORATION, PERFORMANCE and EXCHANGE

EXCHANGE

STRUT recognises the value in reciprocal partnerships and continues to successfully align programs that build capacity with world-class local, interstate and international organisations. These provide international residencies/exchange opportunities that focus on choreographic and research opportunities.

Australia

The Dance Sites Network (DSN) is one such model and is a research and development vehicle that rotates international artists and choreographic teams around Australia. DSN core organisations include STRUT (WA), Dancehouse (VIC) and Critical Path (NSW).

STRUT has also developed a new relationship with The Mill in Adelaide (SA). The Mill is unique in SA providing arts programming adjacent to its vibrant community of resident artists. It is a multi-artform creative incubator that programs and supports collaborative practice through developing new work and facilitating sustainable career pathways. STRUT SEED recipients are now able to request The MILL as their host organisation for their residency.

The Master Workshop SeriesThese exclusive training intensives, delivered by some of the most visionary national and international artists, build cumulatively into unique performance outcomes of their own and offer the independent sector choreographic models of excellence and aspiration that are usually quarantined to large company structures.

2018 will witness a deepening of our partnerships with The Hofesh Shechter Company (UK), Crystal Pite (CA), and Punchdrunk’s Maxine Doyle (UK).

The international components of the Workshop Series will be interwoven with Australian masters, including interstaters Stephanie Lake, Robin Fox, Jo Lloyd and Anny Mokotow who all herald from Victoria.

Unlike many before them, these Australian artists have chosen not to default abroad but have drilled down into their own practice, developing very successful models on home soil. These national masters are truly aspirational to our membership, hence their prominence throughout the STRUT program.

Taster

Master Workshops usually follow a two-week full day format. This year, we are introducing a new way to access these great artists for those participants who are unable to make a two-week commitment. Each workshop will offer a single half-day event comprising professional class and a taster workshop.

Look out for the Taster within each workshop description.

The Feilman Foundation Pathways to Excellence The Feilman Foundation was established in 1976 by Mrs Ethel Feilman to make donations to causes which were important to her family and in recent times has grown with the addition of the estates of Margaret and Patricia Feilman.

In recognition of the valuable role that STRUT plays in dance sector development, the Feilman Foundation is generously sponsoring STRUT to provide avenues of access to the 2018 Master Workshop Series for recent graduates transitioning out of tertiary academies.

This will take the form of scholarships to cover workshop fees, which we understand can be a challenge for students who are just stepping into the industry.

Scholarships are available across the Maxine Doyle, Crystal Pite, Hofesh Shechter and Jo Lloyd workshops and are limited, at this stage, to graduates of West Australian or Victorian academies.

If you are a recent West Australian or Victorian graduate and are interested in applying for one these scholarships please follow the link HERE.

The Collaborations ProgramMore often than not, resources do not allow for collaboration across art forms at an early developmental level. STRUT has devised dynamic and responsive programs for choreographers that build skills in collaborative processes.

In partnership with the State Theatre Centre of WA and Subiaco Arts Centre, STRUT designs pathways to encourage

future collaboration across all stage art forms. We feel that these conversations should commence at ground zero and be continually nurtured. The aim is to provide all parties with the necessary vernacular and skills to develop performance works of greater resonance and depth.

These collaborations are situated inside theatre venues ensuring the value-add is reciprocal to all parties.

STRUT’s Collaboration Program was a huge benefit to my career as an emerging artist, helping the trajectory of my career, by being introduced to choreographers and collaborators that I am lucky enough to still be working with today.Dane Yates – Composer Collaborations Program

Outcomes include:

- Young artists learning about collaboration across stage art forms and having the opportunity to implement that learning directly back into practice on stage, in order to prepare them for future creative development

- Artists and participants being able to network across art forms for future creative collaboration

- Artists learning about the realities and demands of the stage environment

- Building capacity around marketing and promotion: helping artists talk about their work at all stages of development

- Young artists being able to pitch their own creative ideas directly to the State Theatre Centre of WA and the Subiaco Arts Centre

- Building capacity around audience development for Contemporary Dance

2018 will focus on Choreography and Music Composition with Stephanie Lake and Robin Fox and Choreography, Text, Improvisation and Dramaturgy with Jo Lloyd and Anny Mokotow.

Collaborations 1

Stephanie Lake / Robin FoxChoreography / Music Composition

STRUT Dance and TURA New Music present the next level of collaboration programs for choreographers and composers. Australian great Stephanie Lake continues her three-year partnership with STRUT as choreographic leader and joining her is longtime musical partner and composer Robin Fox.

Together they will design a dynamic mix of assignments, speed dates and developments to equip choreographers and composers with tools in how to communicate and collaborate across disciplines.

Robin Fox will be performing his own concert in a special event, hosted by TURA New Music.

There will also be a showing of the outcomes of this workshop at the Subiaco Arts Centre.

Thrilling, visceral dance, which may trouble your dream state for a while…

So thankful that you have included Stephanie Lake in the program. Usually we cannot touch her brilliance unless we are over East or part of a dedicated project. I am going to follow her the whole way.

Collaborations 2

Jo Lloyd and Anny Mokotow A Room of Dramaturges

Choreographer Jo Lloyd and Dramaturg Anny Mokotow present a rigorous workshop focusing on the intersection of dance and dramaturgy.

Sharing the belief that dramaturgy is a practice inherent in the processes of production and stimulated by the dancer as much as the choreographer, Lloyd and Mokotow will impart methodologies developed from Lloyd’s recent choreographies.

In Lloyd’s work Confusion for Three (2015), hypnotic tension is generated by three dancers as they negotiate a progressively unraveling system of choreography. Utilising this work as a process/ performance model, participants will engage with clear choreographic parameters, enabling them to investigate/negotiate their physical and conceptual dramaturgical choices.

This workshop will conclude with a performance, presenting a new iteration of ‘Confusion’, unique to the participants and the context. This is an exceptional opportunity for dance artists to engage with two assured practitioners and be exposed to new practices, whilst investigating the dramaturgical role of the performer.

What began as a pop-up performance in Joe’s Barber in King Street in 2014, In-SITU then travelled to Fremantle Arts Centre in 2015. Courtesy of producing duo Emma Fishwick and Kynan Hughes, In-SITU took over the Courtyard of the State Theatre Centre of WA in 2016 with St George’s Cathedral being the latest expression.

Under Fishwick and Hughes’ trusted curatorship the 2018 In-SITU now heads to another surprise venue.

I love coming to the In-SITU program. The choreographers made St. George’s into such a thrilling new space and with all that live music. It was like seeing and ‘hearing’ the Cathedral for the first time.

SEED Residencies – Home and Abroad

Four artists per year are granted residencies of up to $10,000 each.

These residencies have been successful in offering financial and administrative resources to choreographers so that they can really knuckle down into a new process. Many SEEDs have gone on to receive futher support and develop into full evening works presented on Festival platforms.

We accept applications from all over Australia. However the WA/Interstate success rate mirrors STRUT’s own state to federal funding ratio of three to one.

Selection is by formal application to be reviewed by an independent panel of industry experts.

2018 successful SEED applicants are

Emily Bowman (WA)Genevieve Osborne withSomething Machine (ACT)Quindell Orton (WA)Rachel Ogle (WA)

STRUT wishes these artists a wonderful journey with their SEED.

SEED residencies may be brokered with one of STRUT’s national or international partners including:

The 2019 SEED Residency applications will open in June 2018.

National International

The SEED residency gave me the opportunity to just really dig deep and find the core of the work, which then kick-started a whole series of other brilliant opportunities. The momentum has now catapulted me into festival contention.

The Rogues Program

An initiative to create opportunities for artists who have taken a more idiosyncratic or non-institutionalised pathway into performance. STRUT’s desire is to draw from a culturally and artistically diverse pool of artists who, in turn, help build a more robust cohort of STRUT Members.

To this date, STRUT has successfully supported 15 Rogues through parts of the 2014-17 program.

Please email us at [email protected] if you need more information or if you have something in mind.

Just take a look in any local gymnasium or hip-hop class and there is bound to be a phenomenal artist lurking somewhere, bursting with potential and hunger…now just go up to them and see if they are game! That’s really how I started… STRUT Director - Paul Selwyn Norton
