Keynote speakerDr. John L. West

Liquid Crystals: The Next Generation

Dr. John L. West is Kent State University’s trustee professor of chemistry and interim director of the Liquid Crystal Institute. He is also the executive director of the Institute for Smart Liquid Crystals, located in Changshu China. Dr. West received his B.S. in chemistry from the College of William and Mary in 1976, M.S. in chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University in 1979 and Ph.D. in physical chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University in 1980. Since joining the Liquid Crystal Institute in 1984, Dr. West has served as director of the Liquid Crystal Institute and of the National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center for Advanced Liquid Crystalline Optical Materials. He has also served as Kent’s vice president for research and dean of graduate studies. Dr. West maintains an active and productive research program. He has published over 140 papers in the field and holds 15 U.S. patents which have been licensed around the globe. His current research concentrates on the development of liquid crystal fibers and textiles, an area of research pioneered by Stark State’s Dr. Ebru Buyuktanir.
