2018 UUMA CENTER Institute for Excellence in Ministry Pre---Packet Dear colleagues and friends, Believe it or not in just over a month we will be meeting in Palm Harbor, FL for the UUMA Institute for Excellence in Ministry. We are so excited! The Innisbrook Golf Resort was chosen two years ago as the location for the 2018 Institute with an eye toward changing up the way we do Institute. Spacious apartment accommodations allow for flexibility in meal planning and room sharing. The spa and wellness center offer everything from massage sessions to yoga classes. The Institute has grown so much over the years and Innisbrook gives us the opportunity to meet together in a retreat setting. You can read more about the location at their website https://www.innisbrookgolfresort.com/, and about the founder Sheila C. Johnson at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ociVEtL8oao. The CENTER team and UUMA staff have been planning and working for close to three years to make this an Institute to remember. The workshop line-up is first-rate with leaders at the tops of their fields and topics that hit at the heart of what is happening in the world right now. Worship and vespers center and energize us. Built into the schedule is plenty of free time to enjoy fellowship with colleagues and new friends, explore the Tampa area, or head to the beach. Due to the positive feedback from last Institute, we are bringing back Meet- ups! Bring your topics for conversation and set a time for a Meet-up to connect and explore ideas. Buckle down, enjoy the holidays, and we’ll see you in Florida soon! In service, Julie Taylor & Jude Geiger CENTER Institute Co-chairs

UUMA COVENANT From the UUMA Guidelines

United in our call to serve the spirit of love and justice through the vocation of ministry in the liberal religious tradition, We, the members of the Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association, covenant with one another:

• To conduct ourselves with integrity, honoring the trust placed in us; • To embody in our lives the values that we proclaim on behalf of our faith; • To support one another in collegial respect and care, understanding and

honoring the diversity within our association; • To hold ourselves accountable to each other for the competent exercise of our vocation; • To use our power constructively and with intention, mindful of our potential

unconsciously to perpetuate systems of oppression; • To seek justice and right relations according to our evolving collective wisdom, and

to refrain from all abuse or exploitation; • To cultivate practices of deepening awareness, understanding, humility, and

commitment to our ideals; • To labor earnestly together for the well being of our communities and the

progress of Unitarian Universalism.

Through fidelity to this covenant and our Code of Professional Conduct, we aspire to grow in wholeness, and bring hope and healing to the world.

INSTITUTE COVENANT Our UUMA CENTER Institute for Excellence in Ministry is a learning environment that is sacred to all who attend. In order to provide the best possible experience for all, the CENTER Committee and Covenantal Relations Team ask that you read and respect it as you enjoy your time at the Institute. We adhere to the covenant of the UUMA (above) and the guidelines of professional practice. We strive to be in Covenantal relationship with one another in our daily interactions. Therefore we acknowledge: 1. We all have something to learn. We want to set and uphold the expectation that

we are a learning community, in which well-intentioned mistakes are an inevitable part of the road toward growth

2. As a community, we do not have to be friends with everyone, but we do give each other the space to do our learning and get the learning we need.

3. In our stretching we will bump into each other, and when you bump it will hurt. We need to engage in accountability to handle this hurt. This accountability has three parts: • to the person/persons who have been wronged • to the community as a whole • to one’s self and idea/image of self/spirit (how do you set your mark? how do

you know you have missed it?)

We take collective responsibility to embody the best of ministry. We share responsibility for group dynamics, recognizing the impact of power in these dynamics, and work in service of our purpose. We are mindful and respect each other by showing up on time and being fully present. We respect one another’s privacy. We are here in service of our faith. And we have fun.

COVENANTAL RELATIONS TEAM

We know we all have good intentions. We also know that the impact of our actions doesn’t always match our intentions. When there is a mismatch between intention and impact, we encourage you to speak directly with one another. When that is not possible or not yet possible, or when that does not result in a satisfactory outcome or when the harm is communal rather than interpersonal, we invite you to seek support from a member of the Covenantal Relations Team. Their work is to listen and engage with people who have experienced any form of oppression, identity based marginalization, or breech of covenant, while at Ministry Days. Should you need assistance naming your experience, speaking with others involved or exploring how to make amends, the Covenantal Relations Team is here to help. They cannot fix it for you, but they can keep you company and offer you support as you explore the next steps necessary to invite all concerned to return to our shared covenant. Information about the members of the Covenantal Relations Team, and how to contact them will be provided at the Institute.

PLANNING FOR YOUR TRIP TO INNISBROOK

We have included a map and some “need to know” information about Innisbrook in this packet (this will be available in larger type onsite as well). Here are some other questions and answers that will be helpful.

What will the weather be like? The average high in January is 69 degrees and the average low is 54 degrees.

What shall I bring with me? Journal, notepad, writing tools Tennis shoes or sturdy walking shoes Casual layered clothing Sweater and/or jacket Windbreaker Umbrella Swimsuit Sunscreen

How do I get from the airport to Innisbrook? We recommend flying into the Tampa International Airport (TPA). When arriving into the Tampa International Airport (TPA), please be advised that the airport is divided into two (2) sides: Red and Blue. From there, each side is split up into two quadrants: Blue 1 Blue 2 and Red 1 Red 2. We have contracted with Super Shuttle who provides four (4) onsite Super Shuttle booths that are located in each quadrant. For the shuttle service you may check in at any one of these booths. Super Shuttle also offers an Execucar service which meet passengers in their airline carrier’s baggage claim area. To make your reservation, at our negotiated discount, visit: http://group.supershuttle.com/group-page/uuma-nurturing-excellence-in-ministry/

When does the conference start? We will gather at 6:00PM for dinner on Monday evening. Conference registration will begin at 1:30PM and room check-in starts “officially” at 4:00PM. If your room is not available a walk or a good read and conversation will be a nice entry point to the Institute.

Do I have any pre-work for my seminar? Pre-work will be sent via email in early January. Not all seminars require pre-work.

Note about Food: Program registration includes snacks and dinner on Monday evening. Because the housing at Innisbrook includes full kitchens in all the rooms we have removed the cost of breakfast and lunch from the program fee - so that you may choose to eat in your suite. If you wish to have meals with your colleagues, you have the option to purchase the meal program which includes a continental breakfast (M-F) and lunch (M-Th) for $200. To change your food preference, please contact Allison. What is there to do at and around Innisbrook? Innisbrook has five restaurants onsite, a tennis club, golf, pools, nature walk, spa, and much more. There is also a shuttle bus that brings guests to the Honeymoon Island Beach (pickup location to the ferry boat to Caladei Island State Park) (15 minutes). Visit https://www.innisbrookgolfresort.com/ to explore the campus. Is housing included with my registration? Please remember that you must arrange for your housing separate from your program registration. Do not assume that because you are receiving this packet you have your housing set. To see if you have reserved (and paid) for housing through the UUMA visit: www.uuma.org/events/RSVPlist.aspx?id=893875

Wednesday Free-Time Onsite: If you want to spend your free afternoon onsite Innisbrook is full of relaxing activities.

Explore Coaching at the Institute: Available Wednesday and all week. Curious about the UUMA’s peer clergy coaching program? Try out a coaching sample session at the Institute with one of our coaches to get a sense of whether this program might be right for you. Look for details about how to sign up for the coaching sample sessions in January. If you will be in search this spring, we are going to experiment with offering our fast track coaching services for search. A sample session at the Institute can offer you a taste of how coaching can benefit you in your search process.

Nature Walk: Innisbrook has 900 beautiful acres with rolling hills & serene waterways and is dedicated to environmental renewal and both in servicing the golf courses and in establishing a beautiful nature walk. A favorite spot for bird watchers, spend your afternoon with the many species of birds. Innisbrook was also chosen as the site of an official clone from a Champion Dahoon Holly tree which is located outside of our Spa. The tree this clone was taken from is the largest tree of its species in the world. Gender Neutral Spa: The Salamander Spa will be reserved for UUMA Members from 3-6 on Wednesday afternoon as a gender-neutral space. The Spa will also be gender-neutral from 5 to 6 on Tues if you prefer to venture out on Wed. If you are planning to purchase spa services, we encourage you to book your appointment during this time – act soon as slots will fill up. Discounts are available. See more information about the spa on page 7. And of course … fitness classes, bicycle rentals, golf, tennis, pools, and more!

Off-Site: There are many exciting and interesting activities in the local area. Design your own adventure or connect with a colleague on Meet-Up to head out on an adventure. With sufficient interest we will have two shuttles to bring folks to Tarpon Springs and Honeymoon Island Beach. If you are interested in venturing off-site please visit the meet-up page to sign up for the shuttle. For more local activities visit: https://www.innisbrookgolfresort.com/play/activities#category-local

Tarpon Springs: Located just a few miles outside of Innisbrook gates, the charming fishing village of Tarpon Springs was named for the fish found in abundance in nearby waters. But it also is known as the "sponge capital of the world," and for its 51 miles of waterfront allure. Tarpon Springs' charming downtown center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors to the Historic District can stroll along brick streets while browsing in art galleries, antique stores, and specialty shops housed in buildings dating from the late 1800s. For the culturally-minded, the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts and Cultural Centers offer theater, art and historical exhibits, concerts, and other quality programs. Honeymoon Island Beach: Make it an afternoon at the beach at Honeymoon Island Beach, also the pickup location to the ferry boat to Caladesi Island State Park; where the beach has been rated "America's Best" by Dr. Beach.
