The 2018 Rescue College Committee wants to help you understand our brochure since in the past we have had opportunities arise that we hope can be addressed in this letter. We have divided this year’s brochure into several sections:

Instructor Programs

We want you to take as many programs as you wish; however, when registering, please make sure that your courses do not conflict in begin and end dates. Some programs require special PPE so please look at the beginning of the Technical Programs or within the descriptions to verify the need for those items. If there are book fees or specialty fees, we have attempted to provide those within the course description. Please note with your class acceptance letter from the instructor, we will try to verify the cost of the books since they can change after the printing of this brochure. Some of the Technical Rescue Programs require that you have other certifications before taking them and we have noted those requirements within the course description. If a course requires you to hold another certification you MUST mail a copy of it with your registration. If it is not submitted with your registration, your registration will be returned as incomplete. All VAVRS Instructor programs require that you hold either instructor certification with: Virginia Department of Fire Programs, Virginia Office of EMS, Virginia Department of Criminal Justice System, Accredited Instructor Certifications or you will be required to take METHODS OF INSTRUCTION. This course is offered twice a year: at the VAVRS Spring BOG and at the annual Rescue College. In the course description you will find the dates of the Spring BOG and the annual Rescue College. If you currently hold any of the instructor certifications you MUST submit that documentation with your registration. If it is not submitted, your registration will be returned as incomplete. The VAVRS Instructor programs require that you hold basic certification and take a pretest on which you must score an 80 to successfully qualify for the program. These pretests are available by contacting the VAVRS State Office who will supply you with the contact information for the Course Coordinators and/or Instructor Trainers who will administer them. You will need to make arrangements to take the pretest (s) prior to the deadline of Monday, March 26, 2018. Please note the pretests are good for two Rescue Colleges. THE VAVRS STATE RESCUE COLLEGE is held annually to offer basic and instructor level training programs. State Rescue College provides training that enables providers to become better qualified in the many phases of basic and specialized rescue services statewide.

OUR GOAL is to increase the level of patient care provided statewide. By successfully training candidates who exhibit advanced knowledge and leadership skills in a particular VAVRS course to become qualified instructors, we increase the basic and advanced levels of emergency service provided statewide. Specialized education in these areas will assist our members in their effort to become well-rounded and productive members of their rescue organization. The VAVRS is committed to providing a variety of exceptional training programs; from EMT recertification to Operational Medical Director Training to Management programs and Technical Rescue training utilizing the most current training course outlines available.

EMS-000 CATEGORY 1 CEU HOURS FOR EMR, EMT, AEMT, Intermediate, Paramedic Instructor(s): TBD This course will provide all 16 hours of Category 1 required topics for the purpose of re-certification for ALL providers. Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) courses are nationally recognized continuing education programs for prehospital emergency health care professionals that bring the care of the trauma patient into a single focus. PHTLS courses provide a prehospital trauma care philosophy, stressing the need to treat the multisystem trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs. This may require an approach to the trauma patient that varies from traditional treatment modalities. PHTLS courses are based on the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), a course for physicians developed by the American College of Surgeons-Committee on Trauma. More importantly, PHTLS courses follow the principles of care of trauma patients as

The AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support course is totally redesigned for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the resuscitation of a patient, whether in or out of hospital. Through the ACLS course, providers will enhance their skills in the treatment of the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiopulmonary emergencies. ACLS emphasizes the importance of basic life support CPR to patient survival; the integration of effective basic life support with advanced cardiovascular life support interventions; and the importance of effective team interaction and communication during resuscitation. ACLS is based on simulated clinical scenarios that encourage active, hands-on participation through learning stations where students will practice essential skills individually, as part of a team and as team leader. Realistic simulations reinforce the following key concepts: proficiency in basic life support care, recognizing and initiating early management of pre-arrest conditions; managing cardiac arrest, identifying and treating ischemic chest pain and acute coronary syndromes, recognizing other life-threatening clinical situations (such as stroke) and providing initial care, ACLS algorithms, and effective resuscitation team dynamics. ACLS is appropriate for paramedics, pediatricians, house

The program provides basic knowledge and skills necessary to: describe the four aspects of the GEMS Diamond (geriatric, environmental, medical, social); discuss and describe the physical and social aspects of aging, independence and ageism; principles and strategies for communicating effectively with the elderly; principles for various trauma and medical emergencies; end of life care, hospice and palliative care program; assessment for abuse, documentation and reporting and who is at risk; EMS and community responsibilities for the quality of life in our older

AMLS is the first course that offers a "think-outside-the-box" method of assessing and managing a patient in medical crisis. It emphasizes using scene size up, interactive group discussion on potential treatment strategies, history, and probabilities in diagnosing a patient's medical problem. AMLS implements an initial assessment-based approach that progresses to a diagnostic-based approach to develop a treatment plan for a specific medical condition. This 16 hour, two-day program consists of interactive lectures, teaching and evaluation stations. The interactive/case based lectures include the following topics: Patient Assessment, Airway Management, , Assessment of the Shock Patient, Dyspnea/Respiratory Failure, Chest Pain, altered Mental Status, and Abdominal Pain. The Tactical Medic Course is a “hands-on” program developed by the military for those individuals needing special tactics and training in trauma care when unique environmental conditions prolonged transport times, or other special situations exist. This course will cover CASEVAC, BEDEVAC, equipment selection and team health. There will be both classroom and scenario training including tourniquets, advanced airway techniques, thoracic and abdominal trauma and needle decompression as well as many other useful

Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, PEPP is an exciting curriculum designed to teach prehospital professionals how to better assess and manage ill or injured children. PEPP is a comprehensive, innovative, and highly visual course featuring case-based lectures, live-action video, hands-on skills stations, and small group scenarios. The Basic Life Support (BLS) course is geared toward the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and the Advanced Life Support (ALS) course is geared toward the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) and Paramedic. The PEPP Course Coordinator should determine which course (BLS or ALS) is most appropriate for an individual. Students will be trained to recognize a potentially hazardous situation, to take appropriate steps to provide for self protection and to initiate effective response actions. 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday, June 14 This course meets OSHA regulations and OEMS required hours for infection control training. *defusing the crisis *promoting mental health literacy *combating stigma of mental illness *enabling early intervention through recognition of signs & symptoms *connecting people who care

Participants learn the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and, most importantly, teaches individuals how to help someone in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. you how to help someone who may be experience a mental health or substance use challenge. The training helps you identify, understand and respond to the signs of addictions and mental illnesses. Taught to police, first responders, corrections officer, and other public safety audiences around the country. This course provides more response options to help deescalate incidents and better understand mental illnesses so they can respond to mental health related calls appropriately without compromising safety. 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Saturday, June 9

The ability to recognize and effectively intervene with suicidal individuals is one of the most challenging aspects of crisis intervention.

This course is recommended for those without formal mental health training. The course is designed to increase awareness of

suicide, and equip participants with information and basic skills to respond to a person considering suicide. Discussions,

demonstrations, and scenarios will be used to facilitate learning. This is an introductory level course.

Designed to present the core elements of a comprehensive, systematic and multi-component crisis intervention curriculum, the Group Crisis Intervention course will prepare participants to understand a wide range of crisis intervention services. Fundamentals of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) will be outlined and participants will leave with the knowledge and tools to provide several group crisis interventions, specifically demobilizations, defusing and the Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD). The need for appropriate follow-up services and referrals when necessary will also be discussed.

This course is designed for anyone in the fields of Business & Industry Crisis Intervention, Disaster Response, Education, Emergency

Services, Employee Assistance, Healthcare, Homeland Security, Mental Health, Military, Spiritual Care, and Traumatic Stress.

Students wishing to enroll in the Rescue Tech Program may take all 3 Rescue Tech classes consecutively or one individual program. If you plan to progress from Basic & Light Duty Awareness and Low Angle Operations to Vertical Rescue—High Angle Operations, you must have successfully completed the entire Basic & Light Duty-Rescue Awareness and Low Angle Operations program. If you plan to progress from Vertical-Rescue - High Angle Operations Level to Advanced Vertical-Technical Level you must successfully have completed Basic & Light Duty Rescue-Awareness and Low Angle Operations and Vertical Rescue– High Angle Operations Level to advance. Students must provide special gear/protective equipment as required for these classes. Students MUST bring your own protective gear: gloves, helmets, hard-soled shoes, eye protection, heavy long sleeved shirt and long pants. RAPPELLING HARNESS IS NEEDED FOR T-301 AND T-302. The following courses are offered at the basic certification level. Spaces are limited and classes will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Please note that some classes require prerequisites for registration. You may be required to submit additional documentation with your registration form. Students who register for courses that require special protective equipment/gear must bring the following items to college: *leather gloves, *hard-soled shoes, *safety helmet, *eye protection, *heavy duty clothing (turn-out gear, jeans, long sleeve shirt are recommended). Students taking classes with practical sessions should be prepared for long periods of time outdoors in all types of weather. Classes will be held regardless of weather conditions. Students must be at least 16 years of age to attend all classes unless otherwise noted. CEU’s for those holding any level of EMT are available for all courses. This course is designed to teach the fundamentals of cave search and rescue techniques, transfer and removal, protection, etc., that rescue personnel would encounter in a cave rescue. The course is physically demanding so persons taking this class should be in good physical condition. MUST provide own protective gear. This class is a prerequisite for the Farm Machinery Extrication-Advanced. Students will be required to provide their own protective gear. The School Bus Rescue program is designed to give the students a well-rounded education in the subjects of bus construction, types of buses and stabilization techniques. Consideration of multiple victims as well as basic and advanced rescue techniques are taught in a mix of field and classroom exercises. Hands-on practice will be stressed with emphasis being placed on safety, strategy, equipment usage, resources for performing swift water rescue, and medical considerations. PREREQUISITES: MUST be in good physical condition. Student MUST be an average or better swimmer capable of performing a reasonably good surface dive, swim at least 250 yards fully clothed with a personal flotation device (PFD) and tread water at least 15 minutes without a PFD. MUST provide your own personal protective clothing to include: a pair of shoes that can be worn in a pond or a river or wet suit booties, a wet suit, a pair of scuba fins, a helmet (water rescue type), 1 pair of leather gloves, a personal flotation device (PFD) RESCUE TYPE III ONLY. MUST have completed Introduction to Swift Water Rescue Basic within the past 12 months and MUST submit a copy of your certification with registration. Special Events Vehicle and All Terrain Vehicle for EMS and Fire use. This is an 16 -hour “Best Practices” course that includes both classroom and practical exercises. Topics include: safety, Virg inia laws, preparing to ride, basic & advanced skills, and hands-on practical evolutions. Prerequisites: EVOC, safety equipment (helmet, gloves, safety glasses, boots) students MUST provide their own vehicle for the practical evolutions. 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Saturday, June 9 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Sunday, June 10 Tricks of the trade goes way beyond the V.M.R. course content. The main focus of the class is specialized machinery and equipment. This also covers everyday commercial kitchen equipment and small shops with machinery and presses, so even a small town will have the potential for this type of rescue call. The other aspect of this class is on impalements. Impalements can come in many forms — such as wood sign poles, car accidents into the woods with tree entrapment into car or patient, steel sign posts, fence posts, rebar from construction sites — the list for both is almost truly endless. Many times these types of calls can only have a good outcome, if the first responder is well trained and keeps up with their training and new theories and concepts. These types of calls are truly gory and very traumatic to all parties involved to say the least. Other special skills for these types of calls require a special ly trained paramedic, usually termed as a “crush medic.” To say the least, crush injury/crush syndrome is an extremely life threatening issue, and in some cases even the very best “crush medic” crew and rescue company can, and do with regret, have a morbid outcome. INSTRUCTOR CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS - PRETEST REQUIREMENTS and HOW TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR PRETEST: All Instructor Candidates MUST provide a copy of their current basic certification and successfully complete (80 or above) an instructor pretest in the course they wish to instruct, pretest DEADLINE is March 26, 2018. Pretests are available by contacting the VAVRS Office who will supply you the information to contact the Course Coordinator or an Instructor Trainer. You may also contact the VAVRS Office 800-833-0602 or 804-749-8191 or [email protected] to travel to their location and take the pretest (this is not valid for the “ropes” courses). All pretests are sent to VAVRS Office to be graded and you will receive a letter from the office regarding your score for the pretest. This letter must be mailed with your application. The pretest is good for 2 Rescue College events. INSTRUCTOR CANDIDATES MUST DEMONSTRATE DURING THEIR RESPECTIVE COURSES the ability to effectively organize and present in both the classroom environment and where applicable, the practical environment, all the materials presented in the course in which you wish to become an instructor. MONDAY, April 2, 2018. New for 2018: For our 2018 Rescue College those who are not members of the VAVRS (agency or individuals) will be able to register beginning March 1, 2018 any applications received prior to that will not be processed until that time.

If you fax your registration, it is your responsibility to verify that it was received by the VAVRS Office. Please print clearly the information as it will be used on your certification cards and certificates. Classes have a minimum class enrollment of 15 students. Classes not meeting this are subject to cancellation, students will be advised after the cancellation deadline if there is an issue. Classes have a maximum class enrollment of 25-30 students depending on the course. Classes are assigned on a first come, so register early. The VAVRS reserves the right to cancel any classes that do not meet a minimum student enrollment.
