HIGHLIGHTSThe OTA annual Winter Conference and Trade Show will once again be held at the Columbus Convention Center. The four-day educational conference consists of more than 80 workshops, a trade show with 150+ vendors and optional events for your entertainment and for networking opportunities (tickets to be purchased separately).
Ethics Training Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018Pursuant to HB 10, all fiscal officers must have two hours of ethics training each term in office as part of continuing education hours. This class, provided by the Ohio Ethics Commission, would satisfy those requirements.
General Session Keynote Thursday, Feb. 1, 2017Charlie Kingdollar is a Vice President and the leading expert in General Reinsurance’s emerging exposures unit. He regularly consults with clients on both the impact of emerging exposures and the underwriting responses insurers may wish to implement to address these exposures. Charlie will talk about the many surprising effects of self-driving vehicles, which will be here much sooner than we all expect!
Donuts With DeTemple Friday, Feb. 2, 2017Join us for donuts and a coffee Friday morning and meet OTA Executive Director Matt DeTemple. This is a great networking opportunity, particularly for first-time conference attendees.
Optional Events LEGISLATIVE RECEPTION, $15 Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018Transportation will be provided to and from the statehouse. Take this chance to meet with state legislators and share your ideas and concerns regarding the future of township government in a relaxed environment.
CASINO NIGHT, $25; Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018Come show off your gambling skills at this casino event. Attendees will have the chance to play poker, blackjack, and more (with play money, of course). Heavy appetizers and drinks will be available. Door prizes will be awarded.
SPOUSES’ EVENT, $25Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018Your fee to this event pays for backpacks and supplies for children who are currently staying at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. We invite you to help fill backpacks, per suggestions from Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Have fun and meet other spouses, while supporting a good cause!
LUNCHEON, $30; Friday, Feb. 2, 2018This year’s keynote speaker is Gerry Preciado. Commonly known as the “Wedge Man,” Gerry has experience both as a trial lawyer and in risk management. Conflict is inevitable in relationships! How do you deal with it?Whenever there is conflict, disharmony, dysfunction or despair, the Wedge Man is there!
Conference Information
WorkshopsWorkshops are offered along several tracks, including trustees, fiscal officers, roads, zoning, safety services, etc. Workshop titles were published in the December issue of “Grassroots Clippings” and online, and descriptions are included in this issue of the magazine.
Trade ShowMore than 150 vendors participate in the trade show, and range from truck and tractor dealers to state agencies to website design and playground companies.
Continuing EducationThe OTA works with the Treasurer of State’s office to certify the required classes for Certified Public Investment Management (CPIM) training. Additionally, the OTA works with the Auditor of State’s office to certify training to meet Fiscal Officer Integrity Act training requirements. Stay tuned for more details.
Leadership AcademyClasses will be offered to help you meet graduation requirements of the Ohio Township Association Leadership Academy. This program is available to those wishing to enhance their leadership and decision making skills. Participants must register, attend the General Workshop and six of 10 electives, as well as participate in a federal component. All requirements must be met within three years, and graduates are recognized at the Thursday morning General Session each year.
FoodMeals are not provided throughout the conference, except at optional events which may require a ticket. You are more than welcome to pack your own snacks. There are several close food options that are available. A detailed map of area restaurants will be included in your registration materials at the conference.

Conference App The OTA will once again provide a conference app. Anyone with a smart phone will be able to access other attendees, a full schedule of events broken down by day, workshop handouts and note taking applications, the trade show floor plan and interactive vendor list, and conference evaluation. The app will be available for download prior to the conference, so keep an eye out for more information and a tutorial.
HandoutsPresenters and/or the OTA will continue to provide handouts in each session; each conference attendee will receive a USB with all existing handouts in their registration materials; a “Handouts” table will be available throughout the conference where leftover handouts from sessions can be found; they will be linked on the OTA website; and they will be available in the conference app.
SpousesSpouses or significant others may attend the workshops and trade show free of charge, however, please indicate they will be attending on the registration form. Spouses may not be another township employee. If they are, they must register separately. There is a separate fee for the spouses event on Thursday afternoon (see page 2).
