PARA ROWING EVENTS:
Ladies and gentlemen,
It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the city of Plovdiv during one very special year. 2018 not only marks the hosting of the 2018 World Rowing Championships, but also the last day from the preparation of our city for taking the mantle of European Capital of Culture. I trust all the stakeholders involved with the organization of the 2018 World Rowing Championships will do their best for yet another perfect rowing event in our city, I want to use the occasion to say a few words for what the city of Plovdiv will be able to offer to both athletes and spectators outside of flat waters of the regatta venue. For the major part of its existence our home city of Plovdiv has been a paragon of cultural diversity and rich history. One of the goals of the involvement of the city administration with the hosting of the 2018 World Rowing Championships is to show to the world rowing community the conglomerate spirit of our city that shares many of the values forming the foundation of the wonderful sport of rowing. We take pride living in a city that includes various different cultures coexisting in a unity irrespective of race, age or gender. A city that has endured through the years and has earned it the title “oldest living city in Europe”. A city that has opted to take the exemplar role in Bulgaria for the creation of environmentally balanced urbanization, showcased in the restoration of the Maritza Natural Park, “drinking from the waters” of the regatta venue hosting the upcoming rowing event. As a mayor of the Host City it is my privilege to be the first to welcome you to our city for the 2018 World Rowing Championships and I hope than an amazing celebration of your favorite sport will be only one of the things that our city will offer you.
Ivan Totev Mayor of Plovdiv
Dear friends,
Dear Rowing Friends,
The 2018 World Rowing Championships marks an important milestone for the efforts of all the people involved with the Plovdiv Organizing Committee, all stakeholders in the host city and every Bulgarian friend of our sport. Starting with the successful hosting of the 1999 World Rowing Juniors, we have undergone a long and successful trip for promoting our favorite sport to the citizens of Plovdiv, and our home city to the international rowing family. A trip going past many successful rowing events, countless days of preparation and efforts for presenting athletes from all over the world with the most fair and enjoyable conditions for having yet another unforgettable race. I believe that the combined efforts of all the stakeholders will prove enough so that the first World Rowing Championships for our city will further the reputation of our city as a meeting point for athletes from all over the world for yet another rowing spectacle.

PLOVDIV
PLOVDIV
In 2019 Bulgaria will have its very first European Capital of Culture. In early September 2014 it was decided that the city to be awarded the prestigious title will be Plovdiv. With its unique atmosphere and ambitious programme that boasts over 60 small, medium and large-scale events, Plovdiv promises to be a must-visit destination for everyone interested in cultural tourism. Recently Plovdiv was proclaimed the oldest continu-ously inhabited city in Europe and 6th in the World. It is 8000 years old. In 2012 the City of the Seven hills, as often Plovdiv is being referred to, was included under #3 (following Rome and Athens) in “Top 10 of the most beautiful ancient cities in the World”. No wonder “The New York Times” called Plovdiv “A Roman Grandeur East of Italy”. Plovdiv is a city where cultural tourism is joint with city emotions delivered by many trendy cafes, restaurants
and night clubs. You can feel the special and laid-back atmo-sphere walking down the Main Street – a charming pedestrian promenade. There you will see the Roman Stadium built in II c. and to the right starts The Old Town where Thracian and Roman remains lie beneath 400 recently restored Revival-style houses with splendid wooden-frame constructions dating back to early 19th century. A great experience is to enjoy an event – an opera, a rock concert or some other event at the Ancient Theatre – the biggest open-air stage on the Balkans. Also, the area in the centre called “Kapana” (“The Trap”) is a place offering space for cultural events, entertain-ment and trade. Recent reconstructions give back its original appearance from a couple of centuries ago and it now be-comes the first quarter in Bulgaria dedicated to creative indus-tries.
Municipality of Plovdiv twice a year organizes Interna-tional Meeting of Tour Operators (IMTO). It presents Plovdiv as an attractive tourist destination as well as the various options for tourism in the city and the region. Main part of the event is the B2B meetings where the participants exchange contacts, experience and have the opportunity to set the start of joint projects. For the past 5 editions more than 240 companies from UK, Austria, Germany, Italy, Russia, China, Romania, Turkey, Greece, India, Nepal, Egypt and others have participated in the event. The IMTO has also been attended by participants of the European Tour Operators Association, BBC, British American Media, other tourism related businesses, as well as travel blog-gers and journalists. The oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe and 6th in the World – Plovdiv – is ready to present you its touch of art and history.

SPECTATOR INFO: One of the main priorities for the Plovdiv Organising Committee is to not only prove once again that our city can offer a world-class rowing experience for athletes and spectators alike, but also to allow them to fully imerse the vibrant and rich atmosphere of one of the most beautiful cities in our country. You can join an English speaking local on a walking tour around the main tourist attractions in Plovdiv - from the Ancient Forum and the Roman Stadium on the main shopping street of the city, through the amazing Kapana District - a venue rich with countless artistic activities: galleries, concerts, exhibitions, a melting pont for street and contemporary art and walk aloing the narrow cobblestone streets of the Three hills and find your-self in the old town of Plovdiv - a looking glass into the various cultures that have left their mark on the city in the 18th and 19th century... or you can simply indulge yourself with the amazing bulgarians wines and fine cuisine of the Plovdiv region. Organised groups of spectators can contact the OC directly for special offers helping them experience our city and all it cant offer to its fullest.
