We moved into our house in mid-July, however, it took us several months to fully furnish it and we just put up artwork and photographs in late February. Finally, after nine months, our house is beginning to feel like a

home. Now that we are finally settled, it is time to prepare for the first Passover cleaning in our new home. Time has certainly flown by.

Preparing for Passover is part of our spring routine, and it is very therapeutic – for me at least. Every year we thoroughly clean counters and cabinets, nooks and crannies. We clean out our pantry and refrigerator. We dispose of food that was opened but not eaten for a while and will donate a lot of our sealed hametz (leavened products) – pasta, crackers, cookies – to the food pantry. Other hametz is stored away in a back corner of the house, far away from the kitchen. This is how we thoughtfully and intentionally prepare for Passover.

The mitzvot of Passover are few and straightforward. Tell the story (at the seder), eat matzah, and remove hametz. The degree to which people do some or all of these mitzvot vary widely, however, an overwhelming majority of American Jews do something to mark Passover. For us, we make a concerted effort to clear out our hametz so that our home becomes kosher for Passover. Matzah replaces bread; macaroons replace Oreos, and potatoes replace pasta – just for one short week.

Preparing for Passover is about much more than cleaning out the pantry. On Passover, we are commanded to remove hametz from our midst. What does hametz (leavening) do? It causes our food to rise; to become puffy and inflated. When we mix flour and water to form the dough for bread, not much happens until we add the yeast. Once we do, it expands greatly. When checked and kneaded, the dough is fine. But if we don’t check it regularly the dough will rise and expand to the point of being unmanageable.

Passover also provides us with the opportunity to remove the hametz of our soul. We need to look inside and determine what we keep and what we clean out. Unchecked, it is easy for us to become too boastful, haughty and arrogant. We take pride in our accomplishments. We have enjoyed many great achievements in our professional lives. Our children are thriving and we love to boast about their successes.

Life is good and we want to tell everyone about it. These prideful moments are examples of psychological leavening which are fine to share if checked and kneaded, like the dough for homemade bread. However, if we only talk about our successes and fail to hear the struggles of our neighbor, we can easily, and sometimes unknowingly, become too boastful. Like the unchecked dough that expands with

the yeast, we become unmanageable and even insufferable.

Passover helps put our lives into perspective. It is a good six-month checkup half way through the

Jewish year. We do this in part by performing an ego check and by removing our psychological hametz. Of course we take pride in our achievements, however, we can also use this season to deflate ourselves a bit and recognize that life isn’t just about our needs and our accomplishments. Rather, we can use our gifts and even our successes to

help others reach their potential. When we remove the leavening of the soul and spirit,

we are much better attuned to the pure essence of our lives. The basic ingredients of our lives,

the flour and water of the Jewish soul are very few. They are articulated by Prophet Micah who taught us

that what God wants from us is simple – to love goodness, to do justice and to walk humbly with God.

Take time this Passover to focus more on others, and less on yourself. As you prepare both physically and spiritually, remove hametz in all its forms and return to the basics. Passover provides us with reflective moments to recalibrate our souls. Share your accomplishments sensitively, open yourself to others, keep everything in check and appreciate the many gifts that our festival of freedom offers us and those we love.

Karen and I wish you and your family a Chag Sameach – a Joyous Passover.

APRIL: Reflection from Faith Bowers:

It’s hard to believe that it was a generation ago that Bruce (my husband) and I thought we would move to Bucks County from Central NJ. On our first visit to the area, we came upon the Shir Ami building. It was a quiet day and not a lot of activity was going on,but to me, it represented a large Reform Jewish community. My mind was made up! We had found our new home.

A few months later, I attended a summer Friday night service and past president Debbie Stevens welcomed me. After some Jewish sharing, she suggested that I would like our Chevrat Torah service on Saturday mornings. I attended my first Chevrat Torah service after the High Holidays. When I came home I said to Bruce, “I thought I would be a once a month Jew, but I am going to be attending Chevrat Torah every week.” A year later, my daughter Rebecca was born and we celebrated her baby naming at Chevrat Torah. She and I have been attending weekly ever since. By that time, I had joined the Women of Shir Ami general board and my little family had now become a part of the big Shir Ami family. Participation in Chevrat Torah has ebbed and flowed over the years with between 18 and 36 regulars attending on a weekly basis. We are a warm and welcoming group and it really is the ultimate breakfast club. We sing our way through the service and always challenge the leader during Torah study. The room can handle over 50, and so we would love for you and your family to participate! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

SHIR AMI | EARLY LEARNING CENTER

8

That was our mantra as we celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday and then the holiday of Purim. The month began with a visit from The Cat in the Hat. He (Miss Shari) read the book, The Lorax,

to the children. Then it was time for fun as we ate “truffula seeds,” made truffula trees, played ring toss and created red/white patterns. Then everyone hit the ground running as we prepared for Purim. The children had so much fun making masks and megillahs, and baking yummy hamentashen. They learned the meaning of giving as they made Shalach Manot bags to give to someone else. You’ll never believe who came all the way from Shushan to visit the children and tell their story??!!! It was King Ahashverus, Queen Esther and Haman!!! What a great surprise (and learning experience).

Our Purim Shabbat was great fun as some of our teachers acted out the story of Purim in costumes. Everyone had groggers to blot out the name of the King’s mean helper, Haman. The children got to participate in the “shpiel” by singing songs and parading in the beauty pageant. After Shabbat, we did a quick change and had so much fun at our own little Purim carnival of games and delicious hamentaschen baked by our PlayCare Enrichment children. A great time was had by all!

Of course, we don’t stop there. We are hoping that spring is in the air as our chick eggs were delivered. Miss Paula taught the children all about incubators and thermometers as we watched our eggs hatch. Mazel tov to us -- we had beautiful baby chicks! The children love to hold and feed the chicks. It’s always sad when they have to go back to the farm.

As soon as the chicks left, we turned our focus to Passover. The matzah bakery came to show us how to make matzah. We were also busy preparing for our seders next month. There’s lots to do!!

The end of the month brought a wonderful MITZVAH project to the ELC. The children participated in “Hoops for Hunger” in honor of Rabbi Briskin and Cantor Kohlbrenner. Our families collected so much food for our food pantry and had fun shooting basketballs to celebrate our mitzvah of giving. Kol HaKavod! Great job everyone!

SHIRON | APRIL 2019

As April begins, we look forward to the true beginning of spring — warmer temperatures, baseball season, flowers in bloom — and, of course, Passover. For many of us, Passover is the one holiday during the year that we can be with a majority of our family. We gather around the seder table, retelling the story of our exodus from Egypt. We taste matzah for the first time in nearly a year, try and figure out what a gefilte fish is, and utter words that remain in our hearts forever: ‘Next year in Jerusalem!’

As part of our seder, we come across four children — one who is wise, one who is wicked, one who is simple and one who does not know what to ask. In our haggadot, this section of the seder begins with the Hebrew words: “k’neged arba’ah banim dibrah Torah” (‘The Torah alludes to Four Children’). What four children does The Torah allude to? According to the rabbis, they are the children found in the following biblical verses: Deuteronomy 6:20-23 (wise), Exodus 12:26-27 (wicked); Exodus 13:14 (simple) and Exodus 13:8 (not knowing). While I encourage you to take a look at these texts and would be happy to study these texts (and any others) with you, what I really want to focus on is that opening line:

K’neged arba’ah banim dibrah Torah — The Torah alludes to Four Children.

Specifically, I want to share a thought about that translation. The word ‘k’neged’ does not mean ‘to allude to’ in Hebrew. Rather, it means ‘in opposition to.’ If we are to take this translation instead, what then does it mean that ‘The Torah is in opposition to Four Children?’ Rabbi Yisrael Salanter, founder of The Musar Movement, said: ‘Each of us contains all aspects of all four children.’ In other words, The Torah ‘is in opposition’ to Four Children because there are not four children being described in our haggadah — there is only one child. Within each of us is all four children — the wise, the wicked, the simple and the one who does not know what to ask. In other words, each of us is four in one.

At Shir Ami’s Religious School, we not only acknowledge this idea during Passover, but throughout our entire year.

Our students are wise, both bringing and gaining knowledge about a variety of topics — Hebrew, Israel, Holidays, Jewish History, Ethics and Values — just to name a few!

Our students can, sometimes, like the wicked child in the haggadah ask: ‘What does this mean to you?’ And, like all of us —including many, many people in the Torah — if we are truly honest, there can be moments when they feel less connected to Judaism and what they are learning. Not only are such feelings acknowledged in our school, but they are seen as the natural part of one’s Jewish journey, of what our people have grappled with for thousands of years and what it literally means to be a Jew. For as our

students learn, being a Jew means being a member of Yisrael, those who wrestle with God.

Our students ask the most simple and profound questions in the classroom, our sanctuary and at home. For our teachers, madrichim, myself and others who interact with students each and every day, these questions are encouraged as they often unlock the doors to true discovery about oneself, one’s connection to living a Jewish life, and one’s beliefs about God. Such questions also allow students to engage in critical thinking, a hallmark of Jewish life throughout the generations.

Finally, there are times when our students do not even know what to ask or how to ask. They are confronted with new ideas, unknown rituals or ancient teachings they have never heard before. It is in these quiet moments —when they do not know how or what to ask — that I believe their amazement, wonder and thirst to know more shows through the most. It is in these moments, usually followed by moments of questions, thoughts and ideas, that I know our future is strong.

My family and I wish you and your loved ones all the best this Passover. May it be a time of family, love and sharing of stories that stretch back thousands of years. My it be a time where we recognize that our children, and ourselves, are complex individuals. And finally, may we recognize that not only is our complexity OK, but that it is exactly the way we were created to be.

We are all four in one.

L’Shalom-Eric

I love spring! The birds are chirping, the temperature is warmer, and the weather seems to make people happier. We had a fun-filled winter of events including, snow tubing, cupcakes wars, bowling, laser tag, shul-in, Purim, Super Sunday and more. Now, we are looking forward to the next two months of activities with Shafty.

Kindergarten will be treated to an ice cream party for collecting 25 pounds of pop tabs! (Fifth grade was a close second place). In April and May, we are preparing for spring by encouraging a “Cleaning out our Closets” mitzvah project. We

will be collecting prom dresses, any “I don’t wear anymore” party favor clothing (t-shirts, sweatpants, etc.) and gently used shoes, sneakers, and boots. All of these donations will be sent to those who are less fortunate.

Senior youth group will also be electing a 2019-2020 board. If any teen in 8th -11th grade is interested in a leadership position, please make sure to check your email this month for information.

We look forward to ending our school year feeling good about all our social action participation, fundraising efforts, and friends that we’ve made.

Join us for great Broadway shows. Open to Shir Ami members, and your families and friends. Our Shir Ami Theatre Club has a busy Spring and Summer planned.

“The Cher Show” starring Stephanie J. BlockSunday, April 14, 2019Currently sold out at $119 per orchestra seat, but a waiting list will be kept.

“Kiss Me Kate” starring Kelli O’Hara and Will ChaseSunday, April 28, 2019 | Studio 54, NY Each orchestra seat is $109.

Both shows are currently sold out but we are keeping a waiting list. We are looking into “Tootsie, the Musical” which is getting great reviews in try-outs out of town for the summer. For June, we are aiming for the Yiddish “Fiddler On The Roof.” Others will be announced as soon as we get confirmation. Please read the weekly e-mails for new shows in the Theater Club section. The big news is that we are waiting for confirmation on “Hamilton” here in Philadelphia for late October 2019.

Remember, we don’t provide transportation, but most people like to take the train from Hamilton or drive to New York. Broadway theaters do not issue refunds. If you are unable to make the show, we can try to find someone from the waiting list, but if not, the ticket(s) belong to you.

MEN’S CLUB

As I started to write my article, I had a great deal on my mind. I had to think about what programs we should run for the second half of the year; what does our great synagogue want from its Men’s Club? - and more importantly, how am I going to transform a very handsome Men’s Club president into a Persian Ho for this year’s Purim Shpiel. So let’s start with my transformation, hopefully by the time you read this article, you will have seen me dressed to the nines for our Les Mordechai play. It is not easy shopping for a dress that made me feel pretty and fit. (Judge for yourself in the photo below.) Many thanks go out to the entire cast and to our own Men’s Club Board Member Alan Rosenberg and his very talented and patient daughter, Emily.

The second item on my mind revolves around what the men of Shir Ami want from its Men’s Club. If you are reading this article, then I have at least gotten your attention. Drop me a line or an email. I really want to know what you are thinking. We are always looking for ideas, new leadership and participation.

And lastly, here is our schedule of events for the next couple of months:

YAHRZEIT LIGHT CEREMONIALThe family gathers at dusk, before the evening meal, on the eve of the anniversary of the death of the departed. The head of the family speaks: At this moment which bears the memory of our beloved (name), let us join hands in a token of God’s grace. A link has been broken in the chain of affection which has long bound us together, yet the blessed bonds of home and love remain. With prayerful heart, we receive this divine gift of life which holds us together in family unison.

Eternal God, we thank You that, in this time of sadness and loss, You have helped to keep us strong. Though the pain of our loss is still present for us, we know that love will always be stronger than death. And so, to You, we lift our hearts, because we know that our loved one continues to be a living presence in our lives. We acknowledge your mercy, O God, who strengthens us with faith and peace. As our loved one lives for us in these words and memories, we kindle this yahrzeit light and sanctify it in the remembrance of the Divine Word: The spirit of humanity is the light of the Lord. (Kindle the Memorial Light.) ZECHER TZADIK LIV-RACHA. May the memory of the righteous be an eternal blessing.

On the anniversaries of remembering, a Jew remembers not only by feeling, but by

doing. Kindling a yahrzeit candle the evening before is one thing we do; the Kaddish

spoken at a gathering of our people is another. All names will be read on the Friday

evening before the yahrzeit. One way to honor your loved one is with a living memorial

such as a contribution to one of our Temple funds in their memory.
