PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE We are proud to begin 2019, and our next 50 years, with an exciting new online registration system, in partnership with RAMP Interactive. We have also finalized and published our League Boundaries, for the first time our 51-year history. Our Management Committee is filled with passionate and creative people who come from different backgrounds and from all parts of our wonderful Province. These things combined with a dedicated volunteer base and eager members will drive baseball forward in 2019.

Baseball Manitoba has an exciting year ahead and there are many opportunities to take part. Sport Development events like the Mosquito Monster Mania, Grand Slam Jamboree are where our sport’s younger and beginning participants get to enjoy playing and learning our game. Challenger Baseball and Girls Baseball are increasing in popularity in different regions for the upcoming season: what exciting growth for baseball! Another Highlight will be on July 6 as we partner with the Goldeyes for the 2nd Annual Baseball Manitoba Day at Shaw Park. This will be a fun day at the ball park and will also include the Grand Slam Jamboree. On the coaching front, we have reduced costs for coaches and associations by creating free coach clinics in the community sport stream and continued the hosting of 2 major events. The annual Coaches Convention will have a strong Long-Term Athlete Development focus and take place at the Canada Games Sport 4 Life Centre March 22-24. Also, in partnership with the Winnipeg Goldeyes, we will host the 2nd annual Coaches Symposium on June 8 at Shaw Park. Baseball Manitoba will hold at least 16 Championships across the province. There will be hundreds of players each weekend in July striving for their teams to come out on top. All of them playing hard and creating memorable baseball experiences they will be able to reflect on for a lifetime. The Senior AA Western Canadian Championship will be hosted in Steinbach, beginning August 15. There will be at least 2 teams representing Manitoba at the event. Coming off hosting the 2017 and 2018 Baseball Canada 21U Women’s National Championship, Fines Field will be in prime shape and supplies a great viewing atmosphere for this event. Baseball Manitoba had great success last year during our 50th Anniversary Season, specifically much success was attained at Western Canadian Championships. Combine the great results with Manitoba hosting 5 WCBA events and 2 National events and you can see that our Province was highlighted all summer long. We know that only quality people can make great organizations and I could not be prouder of you all. Baseball Manitoba is grateful for our sponsors and partners. We have great relationships with wonderful people and organizations, and we appreciate their continued generosity.

HISTORY of the MANITOBA BASEBALL ASSOCIATION

In 1952, under the leadership of Doug Cove of Winnipeg and Laurie Artis of Dauphin, the Manitoba Amateur Baseball Association was formed which has had as its primary purpose to organize and administrate provincial playoffs in various categories of Pee Wee, Bantam, Midget, Juvenile and Junior. This organization stayed in place until 1966 when it became known as the Manitoba Baseball Association Incorporated. Following a successful tenure in minor age categories, this organization decided to join with the intermediate and senior baseball bodies to form the Manitoba Baseball Association (MBA) in 1968. At that re-organizational meeting, under President Murray Zuk, the MBA also affiliated with the Canadian Federation of Amateur Baseball. The aim of the association was to administer baseball throughout the province and provide a level of consistency in the process.

HONOUR SOCIETY Each year at the Annual Awards Banquet Baseball Manitoba takes time to recognize those individuals who have paved the way, and have spent their lifetimes involved in baseball as either a builder, player or official. These honorees are very valuable to our sport and it is their countless efforts and dedication that keep baseball moving forward. For 2018 we had three very deserving honorees and are proud to add them to our Honour Society.

BAT RULES FOR PROVINCIAL, WESTERN CANADA AND BASEBALL CANADA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Wood bats are to be used for all Senior “AA” and “AAA”, 18U “AA” and “AAA”, and 15U “AAA” Provincial Championships. 15U “AA” and 15U “A” teams will still follow the minus 3 rules for metal bats.

The wood ruling also applies to Western Canada and Baseball Canada 15U and 18U “AAA” events. Baseball Canada has implemented a minus 10 (-10) bat regulation at the U13 – 13U Regional events.

The wood bat ruling does not apply to Western Canada 15U “AA” championships. These will still use metal bats that comply with the minus 3 bat rule.

2 ¾ inch barrel bats may be used for all age categories that use metal bats. The minus 10 rule still applies to 13U.

A player is to follow the bat rule based on the division that they are playing in during the game. For example: a 13U player playing in a 15U game is subject to the 15U bat rule. A 16U Girl playing in a 15U game is subject to the 15U bat rule, except when the female bat rule is applied.

Please ensure that for Provincial Western Canada and National 15U Competition, and for 18U, 21U and Senior regional, provincial, Western Canada and national competition, that your teams have the correct bats.

9U GRAND SLAM BASEBALL

On Saturday, July 6, 2019, 12 Grand Slam (9 and under) teams from all over Manitoba will participate in the 22nd Annual 9U Grand Slam Jamboree. Each region will host at least one Jamboree highlighting this province wide program to promote skill development in a fun and safe environment. The intent is for Jamborees to be held in every region of the province in June. Ideally several local communities within each region will stage their own Jamborees. Each Jamboree will be participatory in nature and is designed to lessen the competitive focus. The program is formatted to promote fun and fellowship, as all teams will play several games throughout the day without the need to declare a champion. Each 9U age participant will receive a Grand Slam Jamboree medal. There will also be a draw within each region to randomly select a team which will participate in a Jamboree at Shaw Park on July 6 prior to a Winnipeg Goldeyes game that evening.
