ou gotta be kidding me!”

That was my reaction last year when I looked ahead to

the 2018 calendar, to discover that Ash Wednesday fell

on Valentine’s Day, and that Easter Day fell on April 1st.

Observing the beginning of the Lenten season – a forty-day

period of deep meditation upon Jesus’ sacrificial suffering

– upon the epitome of our culture’s celebration of love?

And Resurrection Day on April Fools’ Day? You gotta be

kidding me!

It’s become custom to attempt harmless pranks on family and friends on April Fools’ Day.

Some traditions trace the joking’s origin back to the Middle Ages, when there was widespread

confusion over which day was actually the first day of the calendar year. Some would trick

unassuming people into thinking that April 1st was the start of the new year. Since then, the

joking has continued, even among people known for their serious demeanor. As a result, when

April 1st rolls around each year, we become weary of trusting anyone on that day.

Can Mary Magdalene’s witness on Easter Day be trusted? “I have seen the Lord,” she said (John

20:18). Or is the joke on us?

The historic witness of the Church proclaims God’s truth: Jesus Christ rose from the dead,

defeating the powers of sin, evil, and darkness. The more we trust God’s truth, the more we

learn to become trustworthy ourselves. So when we tell people that we too have seen the Lord,

they know it’s no joke!

As people who are transformed by the truth of Easter Day, God’s cultivates within us a deeper

understanding of forgiveness. Psalm 51 demonstrates what the world struggles to believe:

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. (verses 1-3)

As these words of Scripture become our words, we understand more clearly the terrible mistakes

we make. Knowing ourselves in God’s truth means coming to realize that God knows us even

more fully.

You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. (verses 6-7)

We sense what God wants. The joy of Easter makes clear God’s desire!

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit. (verses 10-12)

FUMC APPORTIONMENT“We recently received this letter acknowledging that we paid 100% of our apportionments this past year. Our church has a long -standing history of paying our apportionments in full and our congregation can certainly take pride in that accomplishment. Thanks for your ongoing support for all aspects of our church’s ministry. Your tithe truly makes a difference in untold lives.” – Steve Schoch

Rev. Laura Auten, Superintendent February 27, 2018 Dear Friends, I want to express my gratitude to you for completing your conference and district apportionment giving. Your portion provides for ministry in your community, in your region and state and throughout the world. Specifically, the Uwharrie district is able to provide funds for community ministries and outreach efforts because of your portion. We are able to provide resources to congregations for healthy transitions, conflict transformation and strategic planning for vital ministry. As your portion joins the portion of other United Methodists, we are able to be a faithful presence in God’s world! As your missional strategist and superintendent, I thank you!

Grace and peace, Laura H. Auten

The 5th Sunday Series will continue on April 29. The speaker is Dr. Vergel Lattimore III, President of Hood Theological Seminary.

The resurrected Christ delivers on the hopes of ancient Israel, and indeed satisfies world’s longings. Is this just silly

joking? No – it’s true! In Jesus Christ, God’s presence is with us today and for eternity.

We are saved! Hallelujah!

MEMORIAL TO PEGGY GLASCO reak of Day,” a painting by Christina Saj, was recently installed in the passageway leading from the Fisher Street entrance to the Narthex. This painting serves as a memorial to the late Mrs. Peggy Glasco. Peggy was

a life-long resident of Rowan County and a graduate of Boyden High School. She was a long-time member of First United Methodist Church and bequeathed her entire estate to the church she loved. She was active in United Methodist Women as well as numerous community groups and served as a nurse at the Bill Hefner VA Hospital until her retirement. During her time at Sarah Lawrence College and Bard College, Christina Saj studied art history. Then, while at Oxford University, she explored the traditional techniques of Byzantine Icon painting. Her works have been exhibited at the Museum of Biblical Art, the National Cathedral, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, Union Theological Seminary and other churches and museums.

The niche in which the painting sits was created by Jerry Long, a Salisbury woodworker.

FUMC AFTER-SCHOOL CAREur after-school program children are marching through spring! We have 26 children ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. They have grown physically and

academically since beginning this school year. We are proud of the hard work they have put in to become better students by challenging themselves. We read a short devotion every day and try to help them see the importance of balancing fun and learning while developing good character traits. They teach us some things, too!

If you or someone you know may be interested in our program, please come by and visit. We will begin open enrollment for 2018-2019 on Tuesday, April 17. You will be able to pick up registration packets in several areas around the church. Also, you can call 704-433-6679 to request packets, a tour or additional information. Most of the forms can be printed from this website: www.fumcsalisbury.org. Click learn, then children and youth, then after-school care. ***New this year, we are now picking up students from Isenberg; pass the word, please!***

Wishing everyone a happy, safe spring!

FUMC PRESCHOOLo one is happier to see the springtime come than our Preschool children. Just like God breathes

new life in the flowers and trees, birds and squirrels, the children seem to have new life as well, especially during their Easter activities. It’s hard to believe we only have a couple months left to this school year. With that being said, there are still openings in each class for the 2018-2019 school year. If you know anyone interested, have them contact the school Director, Patsy Langlais at 704-754-0443.

As a reminder, our annual fundraiser, “Picasso and Pastries” will be held on Wednesday, April 18th. Please come out and support our school!

CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTERappy spring from the FUMC CDC! The themes we are learning about helps us to answer many

questions. What foods come from trees? Who takes care of trees? How do trees change? What can we do with parts of trees? What do we know about buildings? What do we want to find out? Who builds buildings? What are they made out of? And, what tools do they use to make buildings? The teachers at FUMC CDC will implement our themes using Creative Curriculum. This will include 38 research-based objectives that are the heart of the curriculum and define the path teachers take with children in their classroom. They inform every aspect of teaching, include predictors of school success, and are aligned with state early learning guidelines. When teachers begin to implement the curriculum, they can look to the objectives for development and learning to

H guide them. These objectives define the knowledge, skills, and abilities that teachers are helping children acquire in this program. We are having so much fun learning and growing! The FUMC CDC is currently enrolling children ages 3-5 years old. If you would like to schedule a tour of the school or have any questions please call Carey Swanner @ 704-636-3121, ext. 110. CHILDREN’S MINISTRYhe Staff-Parish Relations Committee is pleased that

Rev. Abby Hedgecock has agreed to remain working with our Children’s Ministry program on a contractual basis while we continue to search for the right person to join our staff in the important role of Director of Children’s Ministry.

Abby has assisted us for the past seven months in evaluating our program, coordinating the work of our volunteers, identifying and distributing curriculum materials for Sunday School, directing Children’s Church, and helping to plan for various events.

In addition to continuing with these duties, she will take an active role in helping us locate and recruit a suitable candidate for filling the positon of Director of Children’s Ministries. SPRC and Rev. Hedgecock agree that finding the right person is more important than establishing a specific time-table for accomplishing this goal.

We appreciate Abby’s willingness to continue to serve her home church in this manner. We also appreciate the work of parents and volunteers who have stepped up to keep our children’s program active during this time of transition. We will keep the congregation informed regarding any changes as they occur. Rick Eldridge, Chair Staff-Parish Relations Committee

Children’s Sunday School Update In March, we launched the new curriculum for our Children’s Sunday School. It is from Spark House Publishing, entitled, Holy Moly. If you want to take a look at what our children experience each week, the publisher’s website is www.wearesparkhouse.com These pictures are from our lesson about Lazarus. In each lesson, there is an interactive game or opening activity, video clip, sharing of the Bible Story, and finally a tangible activity to conclude the theme of the lesson. Here is a recap of the Lazarus lesson:

Opened with a Game: Each team raced to see how quickly they could wrap up Lazarus with toilet paper.

Shared the video clip: Through animation, the 5-minute video clip retells the story of Lazarus’ death and Jesus miraculously bringing him back to life. It also depicted the emotions felt by everyone involved, including the Pharisees’ spying on Jesus from a bush.

Discussion of the video and the Bible Story: The kids answered questions about things they noticed in the video clip. Then we shared in the Bible Story. We were combined for this part of the lesson, and the older kids read the story for the whole group. Combining all age groups is a great way to incorporate peer learning in the classroom.

Closing activities: The kids were able to choose from a variety of activities. These included making a kite, making a diorama of the tomb scene, or a word search puzzle.

Children’s Sunday is April 29, 2018We are excited to have children participate and lead worship on Sunday, April 29. We will need children to greet and hand out bulletins, usher, read liturgy and scripture. We also are forming a special choir for Children’s Sunday. The choir will practice on Sunday mornings prior to Sunday School April 8, 15, and 22. If your child is interested in participating, please let Reverend Abby Hedgecock know by April 6 at [email protected] or 704-636-3121.

MISSION MOMENT

n other words, our ‘mission statements’ are about how we

participate in the work that God is already doing. Our denomination summarizes this as “Making disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the world.” Our congregation summarizes this as “To make and nurture Christian disciples in the presence and power of God.” Our mission statements acknowledge that God is at work for the transformation of the world and making disciples. Our task is to participate in that.

Early Methodists emphasized ‘works of piety’ and ‘works of mercy’. Early covenant discipleship groups (first called the ‘Holy Club’) met together weekly to worship and study and pray: works of piety. Equally important, though, were ‘works of mercy’ such as spending time with prisoners, working to get debtors out of prison, helping sick persons to get medicines, teaching children to read, and getting food to the hungry. John Wesley understood these tasks as getting rid of barriers that people may have to receiving the saving work of the Holy Spirit. Modern psychologists also tell us the same thing- people’s basic

I needs for food, water, and shelter have to be met before people can truly turn attention to learning things about belonging, community, and love.

How is God calling for your participation in God’s mission? Participation in and raising funds for our Rise Against Hunger event on April 14? Volunteering for a day at Camp Discovery in June? Serving at Rowan Helping Ministries throughout the year? Or is God giving you another vision of how we might remove barriers to hearing about God’s desire for the health and salvation of the whole world?

We Methodists are Connectional people- we work at many levels, from local to global, so that our work on behalf of God’s kingdom is bigger than any one church or individual can do on our own. We’ve been grouped together geographically into the Rowan Missional Network to work for greater mission by the Bishop and our district. Together with Milford Hills and Christ UMCs, we will host a food packing event for RISE AGAINST HUNGER (formerly known as Stop Hunger Now) on Saturday, April 14

at the YMCA. Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable, mobilizing the necessary resources to end hunger by 2030. To learn more about the group, visit riseagainsthunger.org.

We are counting on YOU!

Look for registration sign-ups at church, on FUMC’s website, and on our Facebook page for morning or afternoon shifts. If you are willing to serve as a set-up or clean-up point-person, please contact Pastor Stacey ([email protected]). We will have opportunities to help pack for various ability levels, and we all can participate by collecting funds throughout Lent for this important work. We will pack 20,088 meals together! What an immense impact for God’s Kingdom.

Are you ready to have FUN and a huge impact?

Church doesn’t have a mission; God’s mission has a church.

…to Shully & Ned Storey for their gracious hospitality in celebrating 50 years of membership at First United Methodist Church by providing THE WELCOME TABLE on Sunday, March 28. This wonderful event brought together our congregation in a meaningful way, all due to their extraordinary vision!

Thank you, Shully & Ned!

MECHANICAL ROOM & BASEMENT urrent status of remaining work for the Mechanical Room and Basement areas as of 3/9/18:

- The remaining gas fired boilers will be ordered and installed later in April. Mike Fansler and I are working closely with the insurance adjuster and the mechanical contractor to modify the remaining boiler systems to provide more system flexibility in operation and additional energy efficiency. There will be some modifications required to the boiler venting system due to the physical characteristics of the new boilers and changes to the N. C. Boiler Code from the original installation.

- The chilled water and condenser water primary and secondary pump motors were replaced as scheduled during the week of March 5th.

- The variable speed drives were replaced as scheduled this week.

- The chiller electrical panel contactors were partially replaced this week. The remaining contactors will be installed the week of March 12th. The mechanical contractor will also be performing routine cooling tower maintenance prior to bringing the chilled water system back on line. After this is completed, the chilled water system will be available for cooling if required.

- The replacement of a 40 gallon water heater in the Mechanical Room will be performed the week of March 12th.

- Asbestos abatement in the hallway and Scout Rooms

C was completed this week. A completion schedule for the re-flooring of these areas has not been established.

- Unrelated to the Mechanical Room and Basement restoration, but of significance, the Sanctuary dehumidification system was repaired with several new replacement components and is operable.

Current status of remaining work for the Mechanical Room and Basement areas as of 3/23/18:

- The remaining gas fired boiler selection has been made with alternative cost comparisons and are currently being reviewed by the insurance adjuster for approval prior to ordering the new gas fired boilers. We anticipate that the additional boilers will be ordered and installed during late April.

- The chilled water system component replacements and cooling tower maintenance were completed last week. The HVAC controls subcontractor is scheduled to complete all new system programming work prior to March 29th. After this work is completed, the chilled water system (air conditioning system) will be fully operable if required.

- The replacement of a 40 gallon water heater in the Mechanical Room was completed the week of March 12th.

- The basement hallway and Scout Rooms re-flooring and painting will performed during the next two weeks

BACK TO LUMBERTONfter the catastrophic eastern North Carolina floods of October 2016, relief officials predicted it would take years for hard hit communities to

recover. First UMC has already sent three building teams to Lumberton, NC. It is now time to send a fourth. We already have a licensed plumber and a licensed electrician signed up to go. We will also need painters, framers, and all round helpers. We will leave Thursday afternoon May 3rd and return Sunday May 6th. Our team will be housed in Fairmont’s Trinity House a short distance from Lumberton. Thanks to generous local donations and UMCOR we can cover 100% of the cost for participants. For more information and to volunteer contact Fred and Taffy Jordan (704-633-4514 or [email protected].). Donations in support of this ministry can also be made directly to our church business office.
