CommencementCollege Ten
Social Justice and Community
Founded in Fall 2002, College Ten is the newest college at UCSC. College Ten and its sister college, College Nine (founded in 2000), are the only colleges affiliated with an academic division - the Division of Social Sciences.
Consistent with UCSC’s founding vision, College Ten creates an integrated living and learning environment through engaging academic and extracurricular programs focused on the theme of Social Justice and Community. In addition to the College Ten core course, a range of enrichment classes are offered, such as the Social Justice Issues Workshop; Social Justice, institutions and power, and methodologies of Critical Praxis. A unique Pathway to Distinction award recognizes students for successfully completing three academic quarters of service and leadership or research and scholarship. Recipients of these awards are recognized at graduation with the College Ten Distinction.
College Ten benefits from active and engaged students who contribute their energy and ideas to help build our college. Now in its 16th year, the Practical Activism Conference is a prime example of student engagement at College Ten. Attracting over 300 participants, this annual Fall conference, planned over a six-month period by a group of approximately 40 students, examines social justice issues and practical ways to get involved. Another example is the annual César Chávez Convocation which each year invites and honors a renowned activist, artist, writer, poet, or scholar whose work reflects the spirit of the legendary leader. Other offerings include the Apprenticeship in Community Engaged Research or (H).A.C.E.R., faculty presentations, guest speakers, debates, films, arts events, student instructor opportunities, and interactive workshops, including Multicultural Community Weekend. These programs bring together members of our community to learn and debate in an atmosphere of mutual respect and engagement. The Social Justice and Community Leadership Certificate, received by some students at graduation, recognizes a deep and sustained level of involvement and engagement with these programs and our college’s theme.
As UCSC celebrates its 54th anniversary this year, College Ten continues to provide enriching opportunities for students, inspiring them as critical thinkers, change agents, and engaged citizens.

The Academic Attire The formal attire worn by the graduates, faculty, and officers of the university on the occasion of these commencement exercises has historic roots in medieval Europe. Dressed in cap and gown, the graduates and their professors form part of a long-standing tradition that dates to Paris and Bologna, to Oxford and Cambridge. The precise origins of the several parts of the academic garb are not clear. However, as medieval students enjoyed the status of clerics during their university years, one is hardly wrong in asserting their attire found its inspiration in the clerical dress of medieval Europe. The gown seems to be an adaptation of the robe of a friar or priest; the hood, of the monk’s or friar’s cowl; and the mortarboard cap of today, the end-product of curious evolution, recalls the skull cap of days when tonsured heads needed protection against the drafts of medieval classrooms. Academic attire began to appear quite generally on United States campuses in the late 1800s. Since that time, its use has become universal for solemn university functions and its pattern highly uniform.
The Gown The gowns are three in number and styling. That of the bachelor is a yoked, closed-front garment with long, pointed sleeves; that of the master is cut to be worn open-front, with long, closed sleeves and slits cut just above the elbow to allow the forearm to protrude; the gown of the doctor is also worn open and has full bell-shaped sleeves. Only the doctor’s gown is trimmed—with velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on each sleeve. Though black velvet is proper trim for all doctor gowns, the color and material of the panels and sleeve bars is often varied in order to indicate the faculty who granted the wearer’s degree: dark blue for Philosophy (PhD), light blue for Education (EdD), white for the Arts and Letters (LittD), gold-yellow for Sciences (SCD), orange for Engineering (EngD, DCE), purple for Law (LL D, DCL, JD, JUD, JCD), green for Medicine (MD), scarlet for Theology (STD, DD).
The Hood The hood at first seems to have been worn over the head and was attached to the gown. When the skull cap was introduced, the hood was retained but detached and worn much as it is today. In the United States, hoods are generally reserved for master and doctoral degrees, although each degree may have a right to a hood. The color or colors with which the hood is lined are those of the college or university that granted the wearer’s degree. For example, the University of California is known by the gold chevron on the field of royal blue. The colored velvet binding or edging of the hood is a key to the faculty granting the degree. The colors follow the same schedule indicated above for the panels of the doctor’s gown.
The Cap The mortarboard has become the universally accepted style in United States colleges and universities. Many European institutions still retain distinctive forms of academic headdress - for example, the University of London’s distinctive tam-o-shanter cap. The doctor, following commencement, has the right to wear a gold tassel on the mortarboard; black, however, is perfectly proper and perhaps more common.
