A Child in the Manger Dreams the Cross.
Dear friends,
With deep joy and gratitude, I extend to you my prayerful best wishes for a holy and blessed Christmas. During this Advent Season, we were reflecting with hope on our own faith and relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and His Church. Now, we are filled with joy and consolation at Christmas to know that all that we hoped for has been fulfilled in the person of the Christ Child.
When we think of Christmas, we probably think about
Mary, Joseph, the virgin birth of Christ, the Incarnation, the angels, the shepherds, the star etc. We think of the joy surrounding the coming of the Son of God into this world as our Emmanuel. It is often portrayed as the most wonderful time of the year; a time to spend with family and friends, as well as a time to remember all God has blessed us with in the past year. Definitely it is.
But the importance of Christmas is not so much that Christ
came into the world, but why he came into the world and what he actually accomplished. Therefore, we should also think about the aspect of suffering behind Christmas; the suffering God the Father and the Son have taken to become one among us in order to save us. St. Paul well described it in the letter to the Philippians: “Though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather he emptied himself…he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death even death on a cross.” (Phil. 2:6-8)
Here is a beautiful poem by Patricia Joan Polham called
Christmas Tears: I wonder if God cried when
He sent us his only son, His most precious gift to offer All of us with love…
… How he must have wept Over his little boy who’d die. His life vanished in the wind.
Christmas had to make him cry!
God’s suffering became the reason for joy for the entire humankind. Christmas becomes meaningful in our lives when we suffer for the joy of someone else. Let us give God thanks for His great gift; lift up our heart and give Him glory for sending the One who, through his death and resurrection, has reconciled us to God and conquered death for us! And let us look with anticipation and confidence to his return as the exalted King, when his glory will not be hidden, but will be open and visible to all!
May our Lord Jesus Christ, born in Bethlehem, bless you,
your families and loved ones at this blessed time of hope and grace. May Mary, the Mother of the Child Jesus and our Mother, watch over you and our Parish always.
I hope to meet each of you in the Church. May Christ
abide in your hearts always! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Fr. Binu Joseph
Thank you to everyone who so generously donated to our Christmas Flower Fund this year. Truly a beautiful sight to behold on Christmas Morning!
