Suggestions for choosing your events1. Choose as many events as possible. This gives a high probability of getting the event(s) of your choice and

placement in the BHMS Competition Team.

2. Choosing many events also gives you the option to drop off event(s) if a situation so arises but still participate

competently.

3. Choose many events initially as your schedule allows and then filter out your competition events vs participation

events; also, if an event is totally uninteresting to you after you join, you can drop out. Dropping out of events are

easily accommodated by head coaches at the beginning of season than later.

4. Choose events that are complimentary to your current and previous year’s school curriculum. For ex. VIII Graders

choosing Heredity as an event, have an edge over their juniors.

5. Build events need parent assistance, in buying materials and using power tools, if needed; so make sure your

parents are able to help you extensively.

6. Choosing events that are offbeat and not popular gives a higher chance of winning because competition is less. For

example, Water Quality might only have 1 or 2 teams from each school while EL Gliders, Roller Coaster could have

5-6 teams from each school. About 30-35 schools take part in the San Diego Regional.

7. Inquiry events are open ended and so can be fun to participate. WIDI needs 2 members and Expt Design & Code

Busters need 3 members per team. So, bring your friends along. After a long day at school, these events will be fun.

8. Choose events that might related within the SO event list. For example, AP with DD; DP & WQ.

Important Features

1. The Regional Schedule is such that every school will have one pair of events in conflict. Students might have to

choose one or the other compete and may have to pick an event later in the season. Competition Schedule will not

be available until November.

2. Some events will be assigned only in Combos. This Combo list will be published on the Announcements page.

3. BHMS PRACTICE SCHEDULE IS NOT YET RELEASED or PUBLISHED : because of coaches’ schedules changing and room

availability issues. Do not delay your registration waiting for practice schedule to be published. Once registrations

are processed, coaches can get in touch with their students and start sharing practice details.

4. Events are assigned by matching a student’s rank, their availability and class time. If there is a tie, then the following

rubric is used for breaking the tie:

a. Previous experience in the event

b. Parent involvement

c. Current Grade
