Principal’s Message
UNITY
The elementary years are a wonderous time for children. Each child comes to school
with unique strengths and passions. Each child comes with many stories to tell and a
natural curiosity. At Gladstone School, we strive to ensure that every child feels
successful, valued and respected for exactly who they are.
We will work hard to ensure a strong home/school connection and invite you to
participate in our Gladstone School community. There are many ways in which you
can participate, including
Parent Council: Joining our Parent Council is a great way to meet other parent/guardians,
to learn about School Division activities and to provide support to the educational
initiatives and programs that Gladstone School offers. Please stay tuned for the date and
time of our first meeting. We invite you to join us. There is babysitting available.
Volunteering: Being a volunteer at the school can take many forms. You may wish to help
out one day a week in a classroom or the library; you may choose to help in your child’s
room during special events or field trips, or you may help run evening events at the school.
Please contact Ashley Jones, our volunteer coordinator, or talk to your child’s teacher if
you are interested in helping at the school.
Attending celebrations of learning: Throughout the year there will be having numerous
events and celebrations of the wonderful learning taking place. Your attendance at these
special occasions is what makes the events so special!
Communication: We are always available to listen to any concerns or suggestions that you
may have. Making an appointment by calling the school office, to speak with your child’s
teacher will ensure that there are no distractions. My door is usually open and I sincerely
look forward to meeting all of you.
Terri Warner
Day after day the teacher toiled With a touch that was deft and sure And polished and smoothed it o'er.
And when at last their task was done They were proud of what they had wrought, For the things they had moulded into the child Could neither be sold nor bought
And each agreed s/he would have failed If s/he had worked alone. For behind the parent stood the school And behind the teacher, the home.
-Anonymous
Unity I dreamed I stood in a studio And watched two sculptors there, The clay they used was a young child's mind And they finished it with care.
One was a teacher; the tools s/he used Were books and music and art; One a parent with a guiding hand And a gentle and loving heart.

Expectations of Students
The staff members at Gladstone School believe the following:
Everyone must be treated with dignity and respect
Students must be taught the skills and behaviours needed
for success
Positive interactions with students enables them to accept
responsibility for the choices they make
Student misbehaviour represents a teaching opportunity.
In order for students to “Be the Best They Can Be”, the following
expectations are taught to the students:
Be safe
Be respectful
Be learners
If your child chooses not to follow one or more of these
expectations, an adult in the School will address their choice.
Depending on the severity or frequency of the situation, staff
members may employ a variety of responses to the situation that
include, but are not exclusive to, the following: re-teaching
appropriate behaviour, problem-solving discussion, behaviour
reflection sheet, restitution or caring acts, recess/lunch
restrictions and parental contact.
Please see the following page for a copy of the Gladstone
School’s Behaviour Matrix.

Policy and Procedures
School Hours
School hours are as follows:
As there is no supervision on the playground prior to 8:45 AM, for the safety
of the students, students are not to arrive at school prior to 8:45 AM.
Grades 1 – 6: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
1:00 pm – 3:30 pm
Lunch: 12:00 pm – 12:55 pm
Recess (gr. 1-6) 10:30 am – 10:45 am
2:15 pm – 2:30 pm
AM Kdgn/Nursery 9:00 am – 11:30 am
PM Kdgn/Nursery 1:00 pm – 3:30 pm
Students are dismissed at 3:30 PM. As there is no supervision on the
playground after school, for the safety of the students, we expect all
students to go home immediately after the end of the school day.
Student Attendance
Regular attendance and punctuality contribute to a good learning
environment and positive attitudes towards educational experiences.
Absences and lates both, disrupt a student’s schedule and as they add
up lead to a loss in learning and social development.
As per the WSD attendance policy, we are required to follow up on
absenteeism. Should your child be frequently absent, we will follow up by
way of letters, phone calls, and home visits. Only if necessary, a support
will be sought from the Division Attendance Officer or mandated
agencies.
Children should be in class each day unless they are sick.
Please make sure to report an absence using the Safe Arrival
System.
8
Student Attendance/Safe Arrival
Gladstone School is using the SafeArrival System for reporting student
absences. If your child is going to be absent from school, for any reason -
please do NOT call the school but report your child(ren)'s absence directly
to Safe Arrival instead.
With SafeArrival, you are asked to report your child’s absence in advance
using any of these three methods:
Using your mobile device, download and install the SchoolMessenger
app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store (or from the links
at https://go.schoolmessenger.ca). The first time you use the app, select
Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an
Absence.
Use the SafeArrival website, https://go.schoolmessenger.ca. The first time
you use the website, select Sign Up to create your account. Select
Attendance then Report an Absence.
Call the toll-free number 1-855-278-4513 to report an absence using the
automated phone system.
These options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. Future absences
can be reported at any time. The system is available 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week and you CAN report future absences as well.
Student Information
It is of the utmost importance for school to have the proper student address,
home telephone number, etc. in case of emergencies (illness, etc.). Each
student will bring a Student Description Form home in September for you to
make any changes to our current records. Also, please notify the school of
any changes as the situation arises.
Child Custody
In most cases, when parents are divorced, both mother and father
continue to have equal rights where their children are concerned. If you
have a court order that limits the rights of one parent in matters such as
custody or visitation, please bring a copy to the office. Unless your court
order is on file with us, we must provide equal rights to both parents.
9
Emergency Plan
In case of an emergency, the first alternative site for our school will be the
River Osborne Community Club Gymnasium at the S.E. corner of the
playground (204-452-8822).
Students would walk over to the community club with the teachers and, if
circumstances permitted, would stay there until normal school dismissal
times at noon and 3:30 pm.
We will be practicing our lockdown and evacuation procedures a
minimum of three times throughout the school year.
Student Accident Insurance
The Manitoba School Boards Association and the School Division
recommends all parents consider Reliable Life Student Accident
Insurance, which provides 24-hour coverage for all accidents at school,
home or play. The Student Accident Insurance Program provides
coverage for medical, dental, disability or accidental death and
dismemberment insurance on behalf of students.
Protection is also provided for dental damage due to accident, fracture
benefits, and other important coverages, which are not Government
Insurable Health Services.
Some parents/guardians may participate in an Employee Benefits and
Group Dental Plan, but many of these plans are limited in areas - where
Student Accident Insurance is not. We ask that you compare them to
make sure you have the coverage you require.
A brochure is enclosed for your information.
10
Dress Code
In order to provide the best possible learning climate, the staff and students
at Gladstone School are expected to dress in an appropriate manner. The
dress code includes:
1. No offensive writing/artwork on clothes.
2. Hats/hoods are removed upon entry to the school.
3. Shirts and tops must cover the waistband.
4. Sleeveless shirts should have wide shoulder straps (no spaghetti
straps).
Students must wear suitable clothing for physical education classes. Shorts,
sweat pants or loose pants, T-shirts and appropriate running shoes are a
minimum requirement. Ill-fitting clothing, scarves, jewelry, hard-soled shoes
and socks without shoes can inhibit movement and possibly cause injury.
Toys/Electronics/Wheels
In order for Gladstone School to provide a safe and enriched learning
environment for every child, items such as toys, electronic devices (cell
phones, iPods, iPads, mp3 players, etc.) as well as items with wheels
(skateboards, rollerblades, heelies) will not be allowed at school. If your
child brings any of the above items to the school a staff member may
confiscate it and ask a parent to pick the item up at the school. Gladstone
School accepts no responsibility for damage, loss or theft of the items as
well.
We recognize when children take their bikes to school, it is a great way for
them to keep active. Parents are reminded schools do not carry insurance
to cover loss of personal property, so students who bring their bicycles to
school do so at their own risk. We ask parents to assist us in counseling
students to secure their bicycles and to follow safe road practices,
including using proper safety gear. We remind parents that bike helmets
are mandatory for those under the age of 18.
Access to Gladstone School
Please note that all doors are locked other than the front entrance.
Renovations are underway for a buzz-in system. Further information to
follow.
11
Registration Procedures
Please contact the school office (204-475-4767) and come by to pick up a
registration package. Registrations are accepted throughout the school
year. Parents/guardians are invited to meet with the Principal to discuss the
school's program and educational philosophy. This will be followed by a
tour of the school.
Applications will be considered as space is available
with the following order of priority:
1. Students in the school catchment area (as shown on
map)
2. Division students outside of the school catchment area;
3. Non-resident students (until September 30). Schools of
Choice Application must accompany Registration Form.
Please note that students residing out of the
catchment area and out of the Division will be placed
on a waiting list. Consideration will be given to students
from outside the catchment area, after all catchment
area students have had an opportunity to be
registered.
Birth Certificate, passport or proof of date of birth is
required as well as proof of residence, at the time of
registration. Original documents will be photocopied
by the school.
Nursery/Kindergarten
Nursery and Kindergarten are half day programs running for the ten months
of the school year.
AM Kdgn/Nursery – 9:00 – 11:30 daily
PM Kdgn/Nursery – 1:00 – 3:30 daily
Please note:
Kindergarten children must be 5 years old by December 31.
Nursery children must be 4 years old by December 31. (Please note: The
Winnipeg School Division Nursery program is available on a no fees basis to
students who are residents of the Winnipeg School Division. Residency is
based on where the students’ parent/legal guardian resides.)
12
Staff Meeting and In-service Days
Regular monthly staff meetings will be held the first Tuesday of each month.
Classes are dismissed as usual at 3:30 pm.
Every elementary school in the Winnipeg School Division is allowed a
maximum of 10 days per year for in-services, administration days, parent-
teacher conferences, pupil evaluation, etc. Throughout the year, your
children will be dismissed from school for these reasons. No classroom will
be closed more than 10 days in the year. The monthly school newsletter will
have these days noted. Please refer to the 2019-2020 calendar at the back
of this handbook for the school closure dates.
Reporting Periods
Report cards will go home three times during the school year: Nov/Dec,
March and June.
Tri-conferences (which are meetings with the teacher, your child and you)
will occur in December and a Student-led Conference will occur in March.
Please feel free to call the school anytime if you have concerns. We do
encourage ongoing communication between home and school.
Elementary Assessment Program
The Elementary Assessment Program provides detailed information on skills
that measure a student’s performance in four major areas:
Literacy/mathematics
Motor skills
Hearing screening components
Social/emotional
The information is shared with parents and is also used to program
appropriately for students.
13
Lunch Program
The lunch program will be run in the same manner as in the previous year.
The lunch program fees for students living south of Assiniboine River and
students outside the Gladstone School catchment area are $25.00 per child
plus $15.00 for each additional family member. Fees for the lunch program
are due by the second Wednesday of each month.
The students in the lunch program are supervised – lunch is not provided
(we are not able to place lunches in a fridge nor are we able to heat food).
Reminder: We are a peanut safe school. No peanut or tree nut products
should be sent to school for lunch.
Milk Program
Milk may be purchased for your child to drink at the lunch program. The
cost is 25¢ per 250 ml for white or chocolate milk. The approximate cost for
milk each month is $5.00 (approximately 20 days per month). The total cost
of milk for the school year should amount to no more than $50.00.
Clinical Support Services
At Gladstone School we have access to the services of the Clinical Support
Services. Through the Clinic, various professional services are available to
parents, teachers, and children upon request. Those services provided are:
Reading: Helps students with special challenges in reading;
Speech and Hearing: Helps students with language, speech and hearing;
Social Work: Works with parents, children, families and teachers when
social/behavioral/emotional issues arise.
Psychology: Helps diagnose and plan for the academic and social-
emotional needs of the child.
Audiology: Helps assess student’s hearing and processing.
Picture Day
Life Touch will be here in October to take pictures of all our students. There
is no obligation to buy. Class pictures are provided to each child free of
charge whether a package is purchased or not. Picture retakes will be
taken in November.
14
Safety First!
We need your help to keep our children at Gladstone School safe. Below
is a checklist of ways you can help us.
Severe Allergic Reactions
Prepare lunches for your child that do not include peanuts or tree
nuts. We are a peanut-safe school.
Do not wear scented products such as perfume, aftershave or
scented lip-balm to the school, as per school division policy.
Student Arrival and Dismissal Times
To ensure that a staff member is outside on duty, please have your
child arrive to school no earlier than 8:45 am. Patrols are on duty from
8:40 to 8:50 as well. There is no adult supervision on the playground
following 3:30 dismissal. Students who are waiting for their
parent/guardian must wait inside the school.
If your child goes home for lunch, have them return to the school at
12:55 to ensure that the patrols are on duty and your child can cross
the street safely.
Help us reinforce safety precautions by asking your child to go
straight home after school.
Traffic Safety
When you drop off your child at the school, park on the north side of
Gertrude and accompany her/him across the street.
Remember to slow down if the school bus lights are flashing yellow
and come to a complete stop when the lights are flashing red. This
indicates that students are getting on or off the bus.
If your child needs to use the Gertrude and Osborne cross walk to
attend school, take time to show him/her how to cross safely. There
may be times when our crossing guard is absent or when your child
arrives at the cross walk late.
15
Communication with the School
If your child is absent from school, please inform the school by
reporting the absence on SafeArrival.
Notify the school if there are any changes to your home address,
phone number and emergency contact numbers.
To avoid disruptions to your child’s learning, we will take phone
messages in the office and have your child, or their teacher return
your call during non-instructional times.
When picking up your child for an appointment, please report to the
office and your child will be called down to meet you. This will ensure
that the office and the teacher are aware that you have taken your
child out of the building.
What you can do when...
Your child will not be riding on the school bus, inquiring about
delays in pick-up or drop-off, or are looking for lost articles
Contact the Winnipeg School Division Transportation Department at
204-789-0452.
If your child will not be taking the school bus home, a written request
must be received by the School stating what alternate arrangements
have been made.
Your child needs to have medication administered at the School
Have the prescribing doctor complete an “authorization for
administration of medication” form. This form is available at the
school office and it must be completed by the doctor before the
medication can be given to your child at school.
Your child leaves during the day
If your child has an appointment and must leave during the school
day, please send a note to the teacher and call the office at
204-475-4767. Your child must be signed out at the office when
leaving. If the child is returning during the day, please sign back in.
