PRINCIPAL’S WEEKLY LETTER: March 18, 2020 FROM: Mrs. Ruiz
2019-2020 School Theme:
Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9).
Dear Families,
Overall, I am so impressed with our teachers, students, and families for the accomplishment of transitioning to distance learning. Yesterday, I even “caught” middle school students spontaneously praying together before lunch in their google classroom chat! On the other end of the spectrum in early learning, it was shared that a student watched a video message from his teacher and reported: “This is exactly like being at school”! Thank you to the families that are reaching out to let us know what is working well! If there is any area in which you feel more support would be beneficial, please do not hesitate to reach out to your students' teachers, including specialists, Mrs. Jeanne Flohr, Mrs. Lizzy LaBelle, Ms. Laura Rodriguez, and Mrs. Abby Hoffman. We are all in this together and are here to assist you!
In addition, all of the new learning opportunities that teachers have already been working on with your children, the school has purchased RAZ Kids and IXL to support continued student growth during this time. RAZ Kids is a great resource to support and challenge students’ reading with a huge amount of leveled books to increase vocabulary, comprehension, and overall reading ability. IXL is a program that offers unlimited Math and English Language Arts practice across thousands of skills—all of which are aligned to the Common Core. Look for more information from your child/ren’s classroom teachers soon!
Looking ahead to the 2020-2021 school year, a restructuring of the middle school staff and schedule is underway. Most notably, Dr. Louie will be embarking on new adventures in the fall. Although she will miss you and your wonderful children, she looks forward to what her new journey has in store and we wish her well!
Luckily, Sr. Dr. Maria Nassali, a highly qualified and experienced Math and Religion teacher with her Bachelor of Science in mathematics, as well as, advanced degrees in education all from Seattle University is thrilled for the opportunity to be our Middle School Math Specialist as well as aid in our students’ faith development! We look forward to the opportunity to officially welcome Sr. Maria into our community!
More information regarding our middle school science staffing will be forthcoming.
Continue to stay healthy and let us know how we can help through these uncertain times.
Yours in Christ,
Mrs. Ruiz Principal

FILIPINO DINNER
Have no fear—we’ve got everything you need to know right hereUnderstanding the facts and keeping your body and mind strong are like superpowers in the fight against COVID-19. And when you share that info with friends and family, you’re doing your part to keep your community safe...just like a real-life superhero!
WHAT?
WHERE?
WHO?
Where did it come from? Coronaviruses may have been around for hundreds of years; no one knows for sure.
The coronavirus everyone is talking about right now is called “novel coronavirus.” No—it’s not a book you have to read for school. It’s called “novel,” as in, “new.” This particular coronavirus is being referred to as COVID-19 (because it emerged in the year 2019).
What is coronavirus?Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that can make us sick. The funny name, coronavirus, comes from the Latin word “corona,” or “crown.” This is because when scientists examine the virus under a microscope, the spikes on its surface look like a crown.
If a person is infected with a coronavirus, they may feel like they have a cold. However, it’s important to see a doctor to make sure it doesn’t turn into something extra-yucky, like pneumonia.
WHO can catch It? People at any age can catch coronaviruses.
Why are people so nervous? When we don’t understand something—just like a tough math problem—it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. There’s also a lot of talk in the news about COVID-19 and that causes people to feel extra worried. It’s important to remember that just because you hear something from a friend or see it on TV, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s true. If you have questions, talk to a grown-up you trust to help you understand the facts.
WHY?
Be a good hand-washer. Sing the “happy birthday” song while using soap and hot water, and dry hands well with a disposable towel.
Stay away from people who are sick, and stay home if you aren’t feeling well.
HOW?
How can we protect ourselves and others? Do the same things you always do to prevent the spread of germs.
Why are they wearing masks? Sometimes masks can help prevent the spread of germs, and some people feel safer wearing them. But experts say that masks are not necessary at this time—unless you are sick. Masks help people who have cold/flu keep the germs to themselves, but don’t really protect you from getting sick if you’re well.

Avoid touching your face with your hands. That means no nose-picking, eye-rubbing or wiggling on those loose teeth!
