The Acts of God in July

"I'm their leader, which way did they go?" Did you ever feel like? I think back to working at Lutheridge as a counselor, when the campers outpaced me back down the mountain from the cafeteria to the cabin or to the next event.

There is an element of "Acts" in the New Testament that feels that way. God is always out in front of the early church community. Just when Peter or Paul or James or any of the other apostles think they are leading, they realize that they are trailing the Spirit already at work among persons and communities. There is so much change happening, so many new people (Jew and Greek, slave and free, rich and poor)

joining this Jesus movement that it is hard for those who think they are the "leaders" to keep up.

We continue our Summer Sermon Series in July from Acts. In June we read of bold and frightening chapters in the saga of the People of God. The apostles have wrestled with who is welcome to be part of the Jesus movement, who can be part of their "table fellowship," and what laws or restrictions, if any, should everyone live by (circumcision?, love?, sharing their possessions?). The real "hero" of the story, the "star" of the drama is not Peter or Philip or an Ethiopian eunuch or Cornelius the military commander; rather the star is the gracious and prodding One who keeps leading, resurrecting, saving, helping, challenging and showing no partiality between persons (Acts 10:34).

The series continues with UNIFY IN JULY with 10:00AM worship in St. Mark's Family Life Center.

Acts of God in July with St. Mark's includes: Sanctuary Repair/Renovation work; Youth Mission Trip to Tennessee; Lutheridge trips for Music, Confirmation, and other Camps; summer vacations for many families; our church reaching out to others in need due to grief, pain, hunger, loneliness; our church in worship and work, fellowship and faith.

I suspect, no matter what we have planned in July, God is already going ahead of us to either guard and guide us; or to disrupt what we think are our plans and redirect us according to "Thy will be done."

2019-20 Food For

Days

Food for Days

Let’s get a JUMP START on supporting our Backpack children at Park View School! It seems school just got out, but the 2019-20 school year will be starting on August 6th.

The need is as great or greater then nine years ago when the program began. Social ministry depends on the caring hearts of our congregation to support FOOD FOR DAYS MINISTRY and other programs that we support. We have heard many stories of how the children depend on this food to get through the weekend. This problem is not going away. In Iredell County we have over 400 students that have NO ADDRESS.

COST FOR ONE CHILD FOR SCHOOL YEAR $250.00 OR

ANY AMOUNT YOUR HEART DICTATES

Please keep this ministry in your hearts and minds and pray for these children and the children all over the nation that need assistance.

You may use a pew envelop indicating FOOD FOR DAYS on the envelope and on your check or use form below.

Stewardship for All Seasons (also known as SAS)

Every faculty you have, your power of thinking or of moving your limbs from moment to moment, is given you by God. If you devoted every moment of your

whole life exclusively to His service, you could not give Him anything that was not in a sense His own already.

– C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

A steward is one who manages the possessions of another. We are all stewards of the resources, abilities and opportunities that God has entrusted to our care, and one day each one of us will be called to give an account for how we have managed what God has given us.

How have we administered everything we have been given, including our time, money, abilities, information, wisdom, relationships, and authority.

How can we become good stewards of these gifts? Plan your giving, know your purpose and let it motivate you, and stay balanced in life. Being a good steward is a lifelong process. Start small and work your way up. If you start small, there is a better chance for success.

Congratulations

We rejoice with Easton & Kim DeVerna in the birth of their daughter, Delilah Brooklyn who was born on April 5th.

We rejoice with Raymond and Sharon Leatherman in the birth of their daughter, Oaklyn Rae who was born June 6th.

Thank You

Cindy's mother passed away peacefully on May 12, Mothers Day. We thank all of you here at St. Marks for the many prayers you sent to us over the past several years and especially those of the past couple of weeks. Your support and love is deeply appreciated. Mike and Cindy LeBaron

Thank you so much for all the prayers cards and phone calls during the last month with the passing of my parents. Sabrina Fesperman

A Guide for Giving

I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. In other words, if our expenditure on comforts, luxuries, amusements, etc. is up to the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little. If our charities do not at all pinch or hamper us, I should say they are too small. There ought to be things we should like to do and cannot do because our charitable expenditures exclude them.

—C.S. Lewis

A Prayer for the Fourth

Loving God, we thank you — the

true Father of our country — for the

blessings of this land and the gifts of

cultures around the world. Prompt us

to strive for justice for all, at home

and abroad. Remind us, in the words

of the hymn, that “this is our Father's

world” and that your goodness

prevails. Amid tragedies and

conflicts, guard us against despair.

Help us focus on the kindness evident

daily: from generous neighbors to

conscientious public servants

(because most are). On Independence

Day and every day, “O let [us] ne’er

forget that though the wrong seems

oft so strong, God is the Ruler yet.”

Amen.

God is Everywhere

We are living in a world that is absolutely transparent, and God is shining through it all the time. This is not just a fable or a nice story. It is true. If we abandon ourselves to God and forget ourselves, we see it sometimes, and we see it maybe frequently. God shows himself everywhere, in everything — in people and in things and in nature and in events. It becomes very obvious that God is everywhere and in everything and we cannot be without him. It’s impossible. The only thing is that we don’t see it.

—Thomas Merton

HANDS On Hands Are Needed for Devoted Service Meets Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. in the FLC

Hands On will resume on Tuesday, July 9th at 12:30 p.m. in the CONFERENCE ROOM. We will begin working on different items for fall and winter. If you can crochet we could use your help with much needed plastic sleeping mats, our homeless population can always use this item. Fleece blankets are quick

and easy to make and we will deliver them to several places. Priscilla is gathering information about a Bandage Project for much needed medical supplies in other countries.

VBS Team…Thank you so for much collecting toothpaste during VBS week for Living Water’s Lutheran Church pantry. We are happy to have a lot to deliver!

We will be heading to Cherokee in early August. Items needed at Living Water's are linens and men’s shoes. Ketchup and mustard are not necessary items, but they were on Living Water’s wish list. I’m thinking children would enjoy some ketchup or mustard! If you have items that you would like to donate please let a Hands member know. If you would like to help us pack and travel with us to Living Waters Lutheran Church in Cherokee you are welcome! We will keep you posted of the date and time.

We’re excited for this experience and look forward to sharing more about it!

Ramping Up for Children, Youth and Family Ministries

Throughout August, Christian Education will be promoting 2019-20 program-ming and registrations with information and interest meetings to be held be-tween worship services for children, youth, and family ministries - including Sunday School, Confirmation, Youth Groups, Small Groups for Parents, Trips & Retreats for the Year, Milestone Ministry, Library Ministry, and all major events hosted by Christian Education (think Fall Festival, Thanksgiving Feast, Advent Fair, VBS, etc.). Look for more details in the August Marker and make plans to get more connected at St. Mark’s this year!

Backpack & Briefcase Blessing

Sunday, August 4th

At all worship services: All are invited to bring backpacks, briefcases, and anything used to manage your work and lives to receive a blessing for this new season of change – at school, work, home, and church – as we all begin falling into new routines and programs.

Summer Rain

Oh, what is so pure as the glad summer rain, That falls on the grass where the sunlight has lain?

And what is so fair as the flowers that lie All bathed in the tears of the soft summer sky?

The blue of the heavens is dimmed by the rain That wears away sorrow and washes out pain;

But we know that the flowers we cherish would die Were it not for the tears of the cloud-laden sky.

The rose is the sweeter when kissed by the rain, And hearts are the dearer where sorrow has lain; The sky is the fairer that rain-clouds have swept,

And no eyes are so bright as the eyes that have wept.

July Children’s Church

Through the month of July, we will offer Children’s Church as a breakout option for Ages 4 through rising Grade 4 to learn about each week’s scripture lessons in an age-appropriate setting during the Sermon time. Children’s Church will be held July 7, 14, and 21. After the children’s sermon, kids will be escorted to the Old Fellowship Hall with Carissa and other volunteers who will host an interactive time of fun and Biblical learning until returning during the sharing of the peace.

Children’s Church Volunteers

Youth and adults interested in assisting with Children’s Church should contact Carissa in the church office at 704-664-5474 or [email protected]. This would be a great opportunity for those who aren’t regularly involved with our children to help share scripture with them in a fun way! Background check required for adults. Contact Carissa to help one Sunday!
