KATHRYN LUXFORD

Kathryn Luxford is a busy and talented 16-year-old singer/songwriter and performer from Glen Innes, a small town in north-east NSW.

From the age of four Kathryn has always had the dream of being on stage. It was at this age that she first picked up a guitar, and she hasn’t put it down since. At the age of eight she started singing and at nine she started busking and entered her first tal-ent quest. In an under 18’s section she took the ti-tle and has continued to compete in countless oth-er competitions and win a few along the way.

Since her first win, Kathryn’s has performed in vari-ous locations around eastern Australia. In Septem-ber of 2016 at 13 years of age, Kathryn released her debut acoustic EP titled Walk Alone. The EP has gone on to be played in over 26 countries.

She performs on a regular basis at many local ven-ues and in school performances. When she isn’t performing solo, Kathryn performs in her band, ‘Burnt Embers’. Burnt Embers have played to crowds of thousands, as has Kathryn on her own.

In 2018, she was selected to be part of Phase 1 of the Talent Development Project in Sydney, through this program she had the pleasure of working with numerous industry professionals and network with other upcoming Australian artists.

Kathryn does the lighting for the Glenn Innes Arts Council Mama Mia production. She is studying En-tertainment for her HSC and part of the course re-quires on hand lighting. Kathryn is currently work-ing on another EP and plans to pursue her dream of music after school.

Studios. Since then there have been many albums and hundreds of shows. I am presently out and about promoting my latest 20 CD album.

All of the songs are my own compositions, and as l arranged all parts and directed the album, it’s as much of me as it gets. I had more input on this al-bum than any other album l have done. GULLYRAK-ER is the name of the album; named after the number one track.

It’s been 11 yrs since l released a new album, and

this one is well overdue. I sifted through 260 of my

originals before l thinned it down to the 20 songs,

which is how it came about. It was a big project

but, l humbly state, l am happy to put my name on

it. I am now gearing up for a bit of a burst to fur-

ther promote my music and I am available for in-

terviews and live performances.

I am looking forward to touring and am headed to the 2020 Tamworth festival, as it will be 35 years since l first stood on that Tamworth Town hall stage. (below: Col in his younger years)

Col Thomson

With a new album under his belt and a swag of

songs, Col Thomson is geared up to tour again,

headed for the 2020 Tamworth Festival.

As a boy l rode my pony to the Nar Nar Goon dance. The Chatfields band would play a most of the surrounding towns family dances, and they would always allow me to step up on stage with them and sing a song or two. This is where my love of performing on stage came from. My parents (Lloyd and the late Margery) always enjoyed life on the road touring from town to town with the music. There was always plenty of laughter around the Thompson camp.

A lot of water has past under the bridge since those boyhood years, but my love for writing songs and singing has remained. I love performing on stage, and sharing my songs with the general public. I first stood on the Tamworth town hall stage in 1985. I was a finalist in the male vocal talent quest. I got my very first record out of that appearance, by way of a custom recording at Tamworth’s Hadley

EDITOR’S NOTE: Some may remember the Col Thomson stage at the back of the Oasis Hotel many moons ago. That’s where a local artist Donella performed a song we co-wrote, for the first time. So when I saw Col at Hats Off perform-ing alongside PBJ and the kids, it was great to see he was back. All the best on the road!

‘ Popular husband and wife duo, the Shelly Jones Band

(Shelly and Lester) are two accomplished singer-

songwriters, well known for delivering strong vocal

harmonies and great musicianship, along with their

signature dose of humour during their live shows.

Their unique style blends country rock & traditional

country, Rockabilly and Rock n Roll, classic popular

hits with some chart topping originals thrown in for

added spice.

Based on the mid North Coast NSW, they have been

performing professionally together for over 15 years

in their current format with an immense live perfor-

mance listing of numerous registered club venues

throughout NSW, and appearances at many well

known Australian Country Music Festivals.

Along with their hard work ethic, the Shelly Jones

Band also enjoy extensive national and overseas radio

airplay since first releasing their music to radio in

2014.

All 13 of their radio releases to date have entered ra-

dio charts including nine TOP 10 HITS in the Country

Songs Top 40 Australian Airplay Chart. They are also

the first country artist in history to debut at #1 on the

Chart with their song “Merle”.

Their many achievements have earned them several

award nominations over the years including the Gold

Medallion Media Awards, TSA Songwriting Awards,

Shelly Jones Band

and a nomination for Australian Independent

Group/Duo of the Year in the 2016 SOUTHERN

STARS Australian Independent Country Music

Awards.

Shelly grew up in a musical family who loved all

types of music, especially country music. She

was given a violin at age 10 and loved it so much

she began classical training. She also taught her-

self to play guitar, bass and piano/keyboards. A

stroke at the age of 14 left Shelly slightly disa-

bled in her right hand and unable to play guitar

or violin anymore. In response to this, she devel-

oped a technique to play bass guitar one handed

and took up singing. With this unique playing

style, Shelly started working in clubs as a bass

guitarist and harmony singer at the age of 16.

Lester grew up in a musical family and soon

gained inspiration to become a successful work-

ing musician. He taught himself to play bass and

lead guitar and soon after took up singing.

At a young age, he began playing in professional

bands on the Sydney club circuit supporting Na-

tional and International artists. He also regularly

toured NSW with various other bands in variety

acts. Lester has since developed a strong inter-

est in sound engineering and established his

own recording studio.

He recorded and produced the Shelly Jones

Band's debut album New Day Dawning and con-

tributed to the recording and production of their

2nd and 3rd albums - I’m In Trouble and High-

ways.

EDITORS NOTE: Hats off to the Shelly Band. They’re a

regular at TSA Song Sessions during January and Hats

Off, always professional and a crowd pleaser. It’s

great to hear they’re songs are so successful on the

charts!

Trinity is a very talented young artist. She plays great guitar, and sings with ability well beyond her years. The 15 year old singer/songwriter hails from the Hunter Region in NSW and is a 2017 graduate of the CMAA junior Country Music Academy . At Tamworth Country Music Festival in January 2018 she was a performer in the Carter and Carter Shine Showcase, an event that “brings together multi-award winning young performers together to showcase their incredible talents”. Also she was giv-en the opportunity to perform at the Country Music Cares Concert, for the Lock the Gate Alliance,

Trinity came 2nd in the 2018 Newcastle Regional Show Talent Quest, winning a scholarship for a term at the National Music Academy.

At the Reg Lindsey Talent Quest she won 11 to 16 years age group and The Senior Original Country Song Writer. Trinity also won best overall artist at The pride of the Barrington talent quest.

In August 2017 she opened for Amber Lawrence at Gresford Bowling Club, for the Paterson Red Cross Fundraiser.

She has supported Travis Collins and Whiskey Busi-ness at The Khartoum Hotel in Kitchener NSW dur-ing one of each of their shows there this year, and also came 1st place in the Intermediate section of the Bluewater Country Music Festival busking Com-petition in Nelson Bay. She regularly performs at Bellbird Workers Club and Steel City Country Music Club.

She is mentored by Lyn Bowtell. At the Junior Academy also by, David Carter, Allan Caswell, Jayne Denham and Ashleigh Dallas. With her Grad-uating Academy Class, she has opened for the Am-ber Lawrence and Catherine Britt Love and Lies Tour on their last show in Tamworth. Her passion for music has come from influences that are diverse from pure country to modern and include John Williamson, Dixie Chicks, Carrie Un-derwood, Casey Musgraves and Catherine Britt.

Hailing from a small community and living on a small acreage, her love of animals and the land has influenced her songwriting thus far.

David Carter of Carter & Carter, multi award win-ning duo speaks highly of her. "Trinity Woodhouse is a young girl with a big future. A confident singer and guitarist she is a country as they come. Her song that she wrote with Allan Caswell about the loss of her horse Sandy was one of the most hon-est and heart wrenching songs I have heard in a long time. The fact that she was able to introduce and per-form the song for the very first time to a packed house at the 2017 CMAA Junior Academy Gradua-tion Concert in such an emotional and profession-al way showed that she has a composure far be-yond her years. Her connection with the audience was undeniable with people either standing to their feet or clapping through their tears. I defi-nitely had the sense that this is only the first of many songs that she will perform that will reflect not only country lifestyle but touch on emotions that we all share. One of the bravest performanc-es I have ever seen. I wish Trinity all the best in her future music career and will look forward to coming to see her perform again." Recently, Trinity was a semi-finalist in the Gympie Muster TQ a couple of weeks ago and is sup-porting along side of Reese Hamilton, Travis Col-lins for R U OK day later this week. She is perform-ing at Sunday Country at Cessnock this weekend.

TRINITY WOODHOUSE

EDITORS NOTE: I first saw Trinity perform at the 2019 Hats Off at a

TSA Song Sessions the Post Office Hotel and was so impressed by her

maturity as a singer/songwriter and her songs were amazing. She’s

one to watch!! Well done Trinity!

Allan Caswell – Multi award winning Songwriter

At the 2018 Tamworth Country Music Festival Allan Caswell was inducted into the

prestigious Galaxy Of Stars. It was recognition for contribution he has made to Aus-

tralian Country Music as a songwriter, performer, record producer and author.

In 2016 when Allan Caswell won his seventh Golden guitar in Tamworth (with

Manfred Vijars) for Traditional Bush Ballad of the Year, it marked 39 years since his

first Golden Guitar in 1980. In the years in between Allan has experienced the highs

and lows of a very successful and hugely varied career … His song “On The In-

side” (the theme for the television “Prisoner”) reached No. 1 in Australia and New

Zealand, No. 3 in England and made the Country Charts in the USA (his own version

was a top 20 country hit in Europe in 2004).

Caswell has also built a big reputation as a writer of children’s songs as, among other

BERYL IMHOFF passed away

peacefully Thursday, 11 July 2019.

Beryl was privately cremated. She

was more of a poet but had a num-

ber of her poems put to music, usu-

ally by Michael Pincott. One of her

songs was a tribute to Reg Lindsay

in which she incorporated the titles

of many of Reg's songs into the lyr-

ics. She also knitted about 100

blankets that she donated to charity

organisation for them to raffle.

RIP Beryl. By Athol Latham
