Around the World in a Day What a fantastic day we had last Thursday. A great deal of planning and preparation had been done in advance by all staff members and the actual day was a wonderful celebration of the many cultures at our school. The classrooms looked amazing – transformed to represent countries and world regions, and the teachers had planned fun and interesting activities for the students to carry out as they ‘travelled around the world’ with their passports. The day started with a fabulous Tibetan dance performance. Students then travelled around to different classrooms being submerged into different cultures through the use of art/craft, presentations, quizzes, virtual reality, songs and traditional cultural experiences. After our journey, we had a delicious lunch with hot and cold dishes from every country imaginable. Thank you so much to the parents who sent in or delivered all the yummy food, there was so much to choose from! A big thank you to those who also helped set it up, serve the dishes and clean up afterwards. After lunch, students watched performances involving an African drumming group, Indonesian dancing and Chinese Lion Dancing. Thank you to the teachers and support staff for going all out to ensure that the day was entertaining, and to our wonderful parent community for providing the lovely food.

Food Containers There are quite a few un-labelled food containers in the staffroom from last Thursday’s lovely lunch. Please call in and collect if you are missing yours. Enrolments There is a new enrolment policy from the Department of Education which comes in to place in Term 4, 2019. The policy changes include the introduction of an enrolment cap, a 100-point residential address check and a selection criteria for non-local enrolments. Details can be found on the department website and there is a parent information flyer in the school office if you would like one. If you have a child that will be enrolling in Kindergarten next year, it is really important that you hand in your completed enrolment form as soon as possible. We need to plan for staffing, accommodation and furniture. Dads, grandads, uncles and the whole family! A date for your diary… We will be holding a Fathers’ Day breakfast on Friday 30 August from 7:30 – 8:45am. Come along for an egg and bacon roll to celebrate Fathers’ Day with your children, watch the choir and dance groups perform and help raise money for our school. The Fathers’ Day Stall will be held next Tuesday, 27 August. Please see the flyers in the newsletter for more information.

‘Arts Alive’ Concert Congratulations to the Stage 3 students who performed on Wednesday 7 August at The Sydney Opera House. What a fabulous performance it was and a memory to treasure. Thank you to Miss Goodearl for the dedication and hard work that has made it possible for our students to have such a wonderful experience. A special thank you also goes to Mrs Goodearl (Miss Goodearl’s mum) for assisting with the preparation and accompanying them to the Opera House. I was very proud to sit in the audience and watch you all perform. Well done. Car Park Recently there have been incidents of cars being parked incorrectly in our car park. This is hazardous to other car park users, and most importantly to children. Please ensure that you park in the clearly marked designated spaces only. Be patient and take your time, being considerate of others. Lost Property The Lost Property basket is now overflowing and unfortunately, the majority of these items are unnamed. Please ensure you name all belongings and if you think your child has lost something, please come and claim it. Skye Surrest Relieving Principal

Kindergarten

Last week Kindergarten and K1/J hopped on a plane with our passports to venture around the world for Multicultural Day. First stop was Italy where we climbed ‘The Leaning Tower of Pisa’ and went on a Gondola ride down the Venetian canals. Our next stop over was in the beautiful Philippines where we swam in the crystal blue waters and saw many different animals whilst completing a directed drawing of a beach. Our next flight was a short one where we flew over the majestic Taj Mahal to India. We designed our own Henna artwork and joined in a yoga session. Our last stop was to the Arctic Circle to visit the many countries in Scandinavia – Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden. Whilst visiting we were lucky enough to see the ‘Aurora Borealis’ also known as the Northern lights and battle the Vikings with our own shields. This term in Mathematics we have been exploring patterns. We have been talking about and creating complex patterns which involve three or more elements. We have also been identifying and recording repeating elements in our patterns with our learning partners. We are concentrating on problem solving and higher order thinking. We have asking ourselves WHY it is a pattern and HOW do we know?

We have had fabulous adventures in Term 3 with a trip around the world. Our adventure started by learning facts about our class countries. We researched, created masterful artworks and craft items to produce an exciting classroom for our friends to visit. On the day we set off with our passports and discovered fascinating facts about the world around us. One of the highlights of the day was trying lots of delicious foods from all the different countries. Thank you to everyone for your scrumptious donations In English we have been learning about figurative language features such as similes, alliteration, onomatopoeia, metaphors, personification, rhyme and repetition. We looked at how authors use this in their writing to make it entertaining and impactful. We have had fun creating our own pieces of writing using some of these language skills.

Positive Behaviour, Engaged Learners (PBEL)

Year 1

Year 2 are enjoying a very busy term. We have been exploring the country or continents our classes had for Multicultural Day. There has been a lot of research going on and we have also used technology to explore and discover! Some of us used Ozobots to travel around the country whilst others used Green Screen technology to place us with the animals. Have a look at the photos! Sarah researched Sierra Leone and presented her project to the class. We are looking forward to more fun and excitement in our learning journeys this term!

Year 3

What a busy start to Term 3! In preparation for multicultural day, we transformed our classrooms into Thailand (3G) and Tibet (3T). Thank you to all the parents who contributed before and during Multicultural day, we are so appreciative! We enjoyed creating symmetrical artworks of temples and Thai longboats to further our learning about symmetry in 2D shapes. Year 3 blew us away with their well-researched and structured information reports on Thailand and Tibet. In Science, students have been learning how day and night occurs through some interesting experiments. We can’t wait to see what creative ways they demonstrate day and night for their science homework task. Students have enjoyed practising their skipping skills, and have been working hard to perfect the pretzel and whole class skipping activities. We are all working hard to achieve our goals and are looking forward to our upcoming excursion to the zoo!

Year 4/5

It has been a busy and exciting start to Term 3 for Year 4/5, with so much going on! As well as our usual curriculum lessons, we have had ‘Write a Book in a Day’, our multicultural day, ‘Around The World in a Day’ and started Dance Sport.

Year 4 Geography Whist Year 5 students were at ‘Write a Book in a Day’, Year 4 came together as a group to complete a Geography based project. We researched our neighbouring countries and found out about what it would be like to live there. Working in small groups, we focused on the similarities and differences between Australia and countries such as Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Fiji, Cook Islands and Tonga. Groups created a poster or a PowerPoint to answer questions such as: • Where is this place? • What is this place like? • What would it feel like to live in this place? • How is this place changing? • How is it similar to our own locality and how it is different?

Year 2

Year 6

Year 6 have begun their second last term at Brookvale and are making the most of all the time they have left together. Over the past five weeks we have focused our learning around all things South America in conjunction with Around the World in a Day. The class has been developing their information report writing skills, writing about Brazilian climate, geography, history, sport and traditions. We have also begun to develop our procedural writing skills and would benefit from looking at examples around the home. How many can you find with your family? Multicultural Day Review Multicultural day was a very culturally diverse day full of traditional dancing from other cultures, trying multicultural foods and adventuring through different countries. Each classroom ‘dressed up’ as a country, representing the countries environment and theme. Students were given a passport so they could travel around the world. Families also brought in their traditional foods to be a part of the big feast of food at lunch. First thing in the morning, we had lovely traditional Tibetan performance danced by some of our very own Tibetan students. They danced to two songs and sang along with them. Later in the day we had an Indonesian lady teach us about the animals in Indonesia and how to say them in her language. She also taught us how to play an Indonesian Instrument. Following that, two African drummers played and taught us about their culture of drumming. WE learnt all about communicating using drums in Africa and we really enjoyed the performance. Straight after that we had a wonderful performance, loved by many, it was a Chinese Lion dance. It started off with two Chinese people playing two instruments; drums and cymbals. A fantastic Lion came out of the main buildings doors and danced amongst the children. After the performance, children from the crowd got to come out the front and learn the Lion Dance. We even got to go inside the Lion costume and walk around. Sadly after this our day had concluded. Multicultural was a fantastic experience for all of us. Thank you to all the teachers and parents for their hard work.

Maths One aspect of our learning in mathematics this term has been chance. We completed a rich, open ended learning task about the probability of selecting a particular card (e.g. a red king) from a pack of playing cards. We learnt to represent probability as a word, a fraction, a decimal and as a percentage. We then tried our luck!

Life in Year 6 In Science we have been developing our understanding of Earths relationship with the sun by creating ‘Oreries’. We have been studying how the Earth and moon orbit and rotate in relation to the sun. We have been working hard on our presentations on the planets and will be presenting them to one another next week. In Geography we have completed presentations on the indigenous people who live in Asia. We learnt about the Dayak, Orang Asli, Hmong, Okinawan, Moken, Vedda, Bunun and Yami people. We have also been very fortunate to have four Chinese students visiting our class and find out how Year 6 students in Australia learn. Although we only got two short weeks with them, we appreciated getting to know more about China and make some new friendships. Thank you to Emily, Eric, Andy and Max for being with us and a big thank you to Ali, Zahir, Mele and Shaqilla for being fantastic buddies and showing our visitors how incredible Australian schools are. Finally a farewell to Matthew, one of our 6H classmates who has been with us since Kindergarten. We wish you all the best in Queensland.

Write a Book in a Day On Tuesday 30th July we were visited by Year 8 students from Manly Selective High School. These students shared their knowledge with Year 5 and 6 to prepare them for the Write a Book in a Day challenge. All students in Year 5 and 6 wrote a story with three teams raising money toward cancer research. The Book Worms (Hope, Felix, Abi, Ali, Zahia, Shaqilla, Ella-Adhieu and Zara), The Shaker Towers (Belle, Philippa, Aysha, India, Samantha, Keely, Lois, Tess and Jaydah) and the Little Lorikeets (Milan, Janaya, Frankie, Jay, Alana, Gwen, Charlie and Ella) started their writing challenge at 8am and by 6pm had completed a fully illustrated book. These books will be read in the library on Wednesday 21st August in the library during our Cake Stall fundraiser. Year 5 and 6 will be baking delicious treats which will be sold for 50c, $1 and $2 at recess. All the money raised will go towards childhood cancer research. Thank you to all the families who have already generously donated.

Library News

Our Book Week Dress up Day will take place on Friday 23 August. The Book Week theme is Reading is my super power. Students are encouraged to dress and behave as their favourite book (not movie) character. Please do not spend extra money on this. It is far more important to act, to take on the voice and mannerisms of a character. When people take on the role of another person they walk in their shoes, they understand what moves and motivates them. In seeing another point of view we are drawn to empathise with others. This is the power of storytelling! Please discuss your child’s favourite character with them, encourage them to practise facial expressions and how their character walks and talks. Students in K-5 will also have a visit from Tamsin Janu, creator of Figgy. Students in year 6 will take part in a workshop organised by Bell Shakespeare on Friday 16 August.
