Since the first settlement in Australia, contractual

services covering many types of work on farms has

played an important supportive role to the rural industry .

Agricultural Contractors of Tasmania Inc . (ACTI) is a

significant force in the States rural sector . Its heritage

includes the Steam Thresher Men’s Association that

formed in the late 19th century, which probably

represented the first time rural contractors united .

By the 1970’s the increasing complexity of modern

agriculture demanded a new collective approach . The

Mersey Valley Farming Contractors Association was

formed in 1973, followed by its northern and southern

counterparts . These three Associations then agreed to

link and form a Statewide body .

By broadening the base of contract work from the

traditional haymaking and cereal harvesting, to include

cultivation, sowing, spraying and many other specialised

operations, the Association has grown into the dynamic

organisation it is today .

Agricultural Contractors of Tasmania Inc like its forbears seeks to enhance and stimulate opportunities for rural contact workers and farmers . It stresses the enduring value of a job well done and of working in a manner that demonstrates fairness, honesty, accountability and a duty of care to the natural environment . The organisation aims to assist it’s members to meet the many economic, technological, environmental and social challenges in agriculture in the 21st century .

The introduction of a Code of Practice reflects the progressive thinking of today’s contractor . This code sets out responsibilities and minimum standards that authorities including Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment and Australian Quarantine Inspection Services, consider should apply to agricultural contractors . Initially the Code will apply principally to weed management and farm hygiene . However it is envisaged that the Code will be expanded in the future to cover other relevant areas .

The Code of Practice is one element of the accreditation system .

It provides guidance and direction to ACTI members on the subject of best practice in relation to contract agricultural work .

CODE OF PRACTICE

This scholarship was established in memory of the late Bert Campbell . Bert was a driving force in establishing the Agricultural Contractors Association in the early 1970’s . He was keen to promote agriculture as a worthwhile and very rewarding career path for young people . With support of the University of Tasmania, a $2500 .00 scholarship is awarded to an Agricultural Science student entering the final year of their degree . Criteria for the R . W . (Bert) Campbell Memorial Scholarship includes exhibiting exceptional motivation and enthusiasm in their chosen field and an expressed interest in Tasmanian Agriculture .

2. Count out 1,000 seeds and weigh them (grams)

3. Find germination rate

Sowing rate = Target Plant Population x Seed Weight ÷

Germination Rate

Example:

Red Wheat 1,000 seeds = 55 grams

Target Plant Population = 150

Germination Rate = 95%

55 x 150 = 8250 ÷ 95 = 86.8 KG/HA

Optimum plant population and seed size will vary, check with your supplier.

ARE YOU GETTING IT RIGHT?

In an effort to alleviate regrowth on roadsides, contractors are requested to pay attention to methods used in and around poppy paddocks, including:

• Clean machinery prior to leaving poppy paddocks;• seed proof cartage bins;• remove seed from around vehicles prior to leaving

paddocks;• securely tarp loads to prevent spillage, including

tightening of tarps after a load has settled; and• removal of all seed from around trucks prior to

leaving the company weighbridge .

Clean down procedures include washing, blowing, vacuuming, sweeping, steaming and dislodging

unwanted material. Prior to commencing clean-down at the end of each job, an appropriate site needs to

be chosen and prepared. The contractor must undertake the following, as appropriate:

CLEAN-DOWN SITE SELECTION AND PREPARATION1 . Consult the landholder about an appropriate clean-down

site . In many situations, clean-down is best undertaken in the field rather than moving elsewhere on the property .

2 . Select a site at the edge of or close to areas where weeds already exist or will not grow (e .g . land sloping back into an infested area or adjacent areas not susceptible to weed infestation) .

3 . Always locate clean-down sites at least 30m from a watercourse and where runoff or other clean-down products will not enter the watercourse . This will prevent spread of weeds down stream or pollution of the watercourse .

4 . When water is used, the clean-down area should be mud free and gently drained away from the vehicle . (e .g . gently sloped, well grassed, graveled or other paved surface) .

5 . When water is used and large quantities of effluent result or there is a rick of extensive overland flow and low soil infiltration, the clean-down area should be bunded and a sump constructed to dispose of effluent .

6 . Mark and record clean-down sites with landowner for subsequent monitoring and weed control .

CODE OF PRACTICE

Contractors responsible for harvesting equipment including headers, rakes, mowers, wind-rowers,

conditioners, tedders, balers, mowers and slashers must systematically inspect and clean, as appropriate, according to the following procedure:

CLEANING PROCEDURE FOR SLASHING, FODDER & GRAIN HARVESTING EQUIPMENT:1 . Detach front and clean where practical .2 . Remove shields and covers where practical .3 . Blow or brush down the outside of the machine .4 . Clean the stone trap/s if fitted .5 . Clean all elevators, slides, augers, drums and concaves .6 . Clean around mechanisms such as gearboxes and pullies .7 . Clean the straw spreader or chopper (headers only) .8 . Increase the wind and run the machine at high speed (headers only) .9 . Check and clean around the fan housing, sieves and screens

(headers only) .10 . Clean the engine bay including radiator, grill, air filters,

oil cooler .11 . Brush or blow out grain bins and trays .12 . Clean out pickup and around bale chamber and knotters area

(balers only) .13 . Clean the cabin, including mats, floor and under the seat .14 . Recheck around the outside of machine and replace shields and

covers .• Use only compressed air or a large vacuum cleaner. Empty

vacuum cleaner bag on the property at a site agreed to with the landowner.

• Do not clean with high water pressure. This can cause serious damage to equipment.

• In certified crops it may be desirable to discharge the header after 50m into the next crop.

Drought Relief Initiative

Zeus intend to combine this relief fund with the kind donation of work hours from Austral ian contractors and farmers throughout the country to facilitate a convoy of trucks carry ing our own purple bales and others to affect ed area’s this summer.

Help us grow this convoy by promoting this initiative in store!

Parts of Australia are experiencing the worst drought conditions in decades. Farmers throughout Australia are struggling to main tain their livelihood as crops fail and livestock dies.

This year, Zeus, a multi-national agricultural packaging company will introduce a special Purple Silage Wrap Promotion in partner ship with our network of Agricultural Merchants that will provide some relief.

The upcoming silage-cutting season is going to see Australian farmers and contractors throughout the country given a chance to support this campaign through purchasing special Pur ple Bale Wrap. In addition to our existing commitment to donate $7.50 from each roll to the Starlight Children’s Foundation, Zeus will also al locate an additional $5.00 from every roll sold to a special drought relief fund.

A Global Success StoryLast year Zeus made a donation of almost $13,000 to our chosen Australian charity, The Starlight Foundation to help with the fulfilment of ill children’s wishes.

Zeus has rolled out similar charitable initiatives in Ireland, UK, New Zealand, Canada, Spain and Portugal over the past few years and during this time Zeus have been delighted to donate over $300,000 to children’s hospitals and foundations globally.
