A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO AND BOARD CHAIRAdventurous • Ambitious • Brave • Empowered • Hopeful • Resilient • Sisters

Victoria NillesBoard Chair

Roni LuckenbillChief Executive Officer

These are just a few of the words that describe the Girl Scouts we met in 2019 and 2020.

As the CEO and board chair of Girl Scouts of Western Ohio, much of our time is spent talking to girls about their hopes, dreams, and plans for the future. Every girl is different and so are their aspirations. Whether she’s a Brownie Girl Scout who wants to be an astronaut, a Cadette Girl Scout who aspires to a career in politics, or an Ambassador Girl Scout who is applying to journalism school, all of these girls have one thing in common: they are Girl Scouts. As Girl Scouts, they are members of a global sisterhood of nearly 53 million girls and women who believe in the power of every girl to change the world.

In 2019 and 2020, more than 36,000 girls in western Ohio and southeastern Indiana chased their dreams and participated in amazing experiences as members of Girl Scouts. They adventured in the outdoors at Girl Scout camp. They ambitiously and bravely pursued the Highest Awards in Girl Scouting. They were empowered to speak up for themselves and advocate for others through meaningful community service projects. They were hopeful and resilient when the world changed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They created a community and sisterhood with their Girl Scout sisters and adult mentors.

Our Girl Scouts are the future and the future looks so bright!

We would like to thank you: our donors, volunteers, and Girl Scout families for being the catalyst for these girls and the incredible things they have achieved and will achieve. Without you, Girl Scouting would not be possible. You are the spark that is lighting the way for the girls in our communities. Thank you for believing in girls, investing in girls, and creating a better future for us all.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

YOU ARE HELPING GIRLS BECOME BUSINESS LEADERS AND ENTREPRENEURSWhen Girl Scouts participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program, they are doing more than raising money for their Girl Scout troops. They are participating in the world’s largest girl-led business and learning critical life skills such as goal setting, decision-making, money management, people skills, and business ethics.

“Since the age of 11, I've dreamed of moving to Los Angeles to work in the film industry. This dream always seemed out of reach until I participated in a Girl Scout travel experience entitled Hollywood Dreamin’ in summer 2019.

The Cookie Program was critical to achieving my dream of going on this trip. I worked extremely hard and sold over 700 boxes of cookies - I even sold 100 boxes in one day at a booth sale! People were motivated to buy cookies when I told them about my goal to raise money for the trip.

When I finally left for Los Angeles, I was so nervous. I’d never traveled this far or left my hometown. However, when the plane landed and I saw palm trees for the first time, I fell in love with Los Angeles. During the trip, I had the opportunity to write and direct my own short film with real-world film professionals. When I was sitting in the director's seat leading a production crew, I knew I was in the right place and my dream to work in the film industry was within reach.

I am grateful to Girl Scouts for this experience and to my Cookie Program customers for helping make my dreams come true!”

21,304 GIRLS participated in the Cookie Program.

YOU ARE EMPOWERING THE FEMALE LEADERS OF TOMORROW

Girl Scouts of Western Ohio is the sixth largest Girl Scout council in the country and the largest Girl Scout council in Ohio.

“I have been a Girl Scout for my entire life which has shaped me into the woman I am today. When I was younger, my family moved a lot, so my mother always made sure to enroll me in a troop and it has helped me make new friends and feel at home in my new town. I signed my own daughter up as a Daisy and that’s when I began my journey as a volunteer. During my 34 years as a volunteer, I’ve served as a troop leader and in numerous leadership positions in my service unit. My favorite part of volunteering is watching girls grow as leaders in Girl Scouts which in turn helps them become leaders in their schools, churches, and communities. Girl Scouting has also helped me step out of my own comfort zone: I’ve gone caving, attended space camp, and had the opportunity to mentor hundreds of girls.”

YOU ARE CREATING COMMUNITY LEADERS AND TOMORROW’S WORKFORCEGirl Scouts are leaders who give back to their communities through girl-led service learning projects that earn them the Highest Awards in Girl Scouting: the Gold Award for high school Girl Scouts, the Silver Award for middle school Girl Scouts, and the Bronze Award for Girl Scouts in grades 4-5.

“My Gold Award project was entitled “Step Into STEM” and it involved designing and delivering a STEM summer camp for students of color in Cincinnati. I chose this project to help kids like me discover STEM fields and STEM role models from minority backgrounds. This project was one of the most difficult, yet rewarding, experiences I’ve ever had in my life. It taught me so much about myself and what I can do with the support of my troop, family, and role models.”

YOU ARE POWERING GIRLS’ OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCES

Girl Scouts of Western Ohio is committed to engaging girls in outdoor education. Outdoor camping is part of the Girl Scout DNA and a critical part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

“My Girl Scout troop is grateful to our council’s

generous supporters for providing an

opportunity for our troop to go camping together. Many of my girls’ families do not

have the financial resources to send their

daughters to camp and you changed this for them. Thank you for investing in our future girl leaders

and for making camp a possibility for my

troop.”
