3 Lacrosse SA – 2019 Annual Report

EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT Wow, what a great season 2019 was! I am often asked what the office does in the off-season and are we looking forward to relaxing, however there is no ‘off-season’ for the office. The year kicks off with iLax, Under 18, Men’s Indoor and Senior State Team Trials all before Christmas has even hit. That doesn’t include the Senior Presentation Dinner and Annual General Meeting that is held in October and November respectively or preparations for Mad March and Super League. This year Lacrosse SA (LSA) hosted the 2019 ALA Under 15 Boys and Girls National Tournament at City Mazda Stadium, proven to be a great success, fantastic venue and increased representation, maximising participation for children in this age group with LSA taking the opportunity to nominate 4 girls teams and 3 boys teams. The two extra teams provided opportunity for those younger players who may consider trialling next year, exposure to the Tournament and what they can expect next year. We continue to see progress in many areas of our sport both on and off the pitch with Brighton undergoing a complete redevelopment, Burnside commencing upgrades to existing facilities, Sturt undergoing major redevelopment and Eagles looking like they will have some improved infrastructure. On the field, I received many emails throughout the year asking me to update ladder positions, it was anybody’s game this year and was fantastic to see such close games being played between Clubs in all grades/divisions. The Board have taken extensive steps to expand our competitions and provide greater opportunity for all levels of play. LSA currently have competitions 6 days a week that provide opportunity for all levels of skills to participate. Some exciting news for the year, Living Choice Australia kindly made a donation to use towards employing a person to assist with the development of Lacrosse. Through the kind generosity of Graham Hobbs, LSA has advertised for a part-time Development Administrator who will be working towards some items that we seem to have been discussing for quite some time, someone to administrate and be the conduit between Clubs and Schools and the like, develop guides, policies, procedures and other generic material, along with arranging/aligning school programs/clinics for Clubs. Whilst the results may not come in the first year, year 2 should see a significant growth in Lacrosse, particular in the younger age groups. All Clubs need to embrace and support this development for it to work and increase the overall participation of Lacrosse in South Australia. Our Strategic vision is clear ‘To achieve significant growth in all areas of Lacrosse in South Australia’, Lacrosse can continue to grow and our community needs to support the game by improving our skills and experience, introduce new ideas and better ways of producing some wonderful games and exciting Club activities. I am always open to discussion with any of our members on all thoughts of improvement to our great game. With so many competing priorities it makes the process of allocating scarce resources especially difficult. With an already reduced Board, during the year we saw the resignation of Scott Willsmore, a person who was sincerely passionate about putting lacrosse in the limelight and making it better from all perspectives. Scott had the sport at heart, had an independent view and provided strong debate in meetings. I sincerely thank Scott for his dedication and commitment to the ongoing development of lacrosse during his tenure on the Board. Further to this, I also wish to thank Anita Lewis who has chosen not to continue in her role as State Teams Representative for 2020. The role of State Teams Representative is always difficult, there are so many aspects to the position and countless bylaws and rules to learn for each team. Anita worked hard on improving the participant experience, streamlining policies and procedures and focussed on developing coaches for the future of our sport. To this I say, job well done! Once again, I would like to thank everyone who assisted in the development of lacrosse this year. GIULIA MARION, EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Lacrosse SA – 2019 Annual Report 4

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I would like to recognise the dedication and commitment of the Lacrosse SA (LSA) board and Lacrosse SA staff for all their hard work and support in 2019. The sport of lacrosse in South Australia benefits greatly from the considerable contributions. In June Scott Willsmore advised the board that for personal reasons he could no longer continue as President of LSA. Scott was and is an enthusiastic and passionate person who provided great leadership with a strong focus on governance. The board would like to publicly acknowledge the considerable contribution that Scott has made over the last 5 years that he has been involved with LSA. The board operated with a reduced number of directors in 2019. Building on the learnings of 2018, where most of the board were new appointees, the board have approached their tasks with enthusiasms and a commitment to do the very best that they could. The Association should take great pride in the representatives who dedicate themselves to these roles. I encourage anyone who has an interest in this fantastic sport to consider making a contribution by being a director on the board. Tim Dickson, Director Development has spent a significant portion of the year looking at the strategies to grow the game. In particular there has been a strong aspiration to continue to develop the school’s program, in particular to create strong connections between schools and clubs to increase the number of juniors entering the sport. This will continue to be a work in progress, and I encourage everyone to commit to the strategy and help out when asked. Several years ago, the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing (ORSR), who is a major contributor of funding to LSA, advised the then board that the Constitution needed to be updated. Over a period of time the Constitution has been reviewed and reference has been made to template documents provided by the South Australian Government and the Australian Lacrosse Association (ALA). A draft Constitution has been developed which is in the final stages of being checked, reviewed and verified as meeting the requirements set. Once this has been completed and the board has ratified the draft document, it will be circulated to the members of the Association for them to consider. The current plan is to call a special meeting of the Association in early 2020 to seek approval from the members to adopt the new Constitution. For me 2019 held some distinctive highlights. Marty Baker, Director Promotions has continued to develop and improve the LSA TV platform. The outcome has been an increase in exposure and the number of people viewing the broadcasts games. Trish Adams, Director Women’s Competition and Stephen Mortimer Director Men’s Competition and Johnathon Kiploks Director Officiating have all combined to manage the competitions this year. The culmination of this was a successful finals series, held again at the Norwood Oval. LSA continues to receive positive feedback and exposure from this event and will look to continue and improve in future years. With the U15 tournament being held in South Australia this year Anita Lewis, State Team Representatives had a huge task pulling together a number of representative teams. This followed on from Anita’s and Courtney Hobbs, Director Coaching efforts in coordinating the U18, Men’s and Women’s state teams earlier in the year. In closing I would like to thank all the fantastic volunteers who commit to making lacrosse the great game that we all enjoy and look forward to 2020.

MICHAEL HOOD, PRESIDENT (ACTING)

Lacrosse SA – 2019 Annual Report 8

WOMEN’S COMPETITION COMMITTEE REPORT In 2019 the Women’s Competition Committee have been working together to improve and assist the growth of Women’s Lacrosse in SA. Season 2019 initiatives and changes:

• Commitment to improving fixtures to minimise movement between grounds for juniors, umpires and support staff through: - Cluster rounds – both junior and senior women playing in one location as much as possible - Friday night lights – rostering with men, juniors or other WSL teams

• New playing rules for Women’s Lacrosse in SA – aligning more heavily with the World Lacrosse rules (+ free movement variation) to increase enjoyment, safety and overall performance.

• Re-introduction of the Super League (pre-season draft competition) to allow an alternative arena for players to showcase their skills, while also acting as platform for players to be seen by state coaches and selectors if interested in representing SA.

Season highlights for the Women’s Competition included: • Strong representation and participation in both the Super League and Mad March competitions. These pre-season competitions were

played with great spirit and increased familiarity of players club to club throughout the regular season. • SA Senior State team competing at the Nationals in June – finishing in second place. Being unable to send a team in 2018, the

WCC were focussed on supporting and encouraging players and assisting them to overcome barriers for participation. • Fixture adjustments of Cluster rounds and Friday night lights relieved some pressure from the players and officials, eased travel

requirements and allowed for further streaming opportunities/exposure through LSA TV. Further strides will be taken to improve on this format for Season 2020.

• Increased opportunity for umpire development and education. With several new concepts/rules to grasp from an umpire’s perspective the extra education sessions offered were extremely valuable to those able to attend. The WCC look forward to working closely with the Director, Officiating and support staff in the future to continue growth in this space, along with the areas of umpire recruitment and support.

Season 2019 continued to provide learnings for the WCC. Having recently completed a season 2019 review, we will look to further engage clubs for feedback and seek ways to improve again in 2020. My sincere thanks and appreciation to: Women’s Competition Committee for their continued input and commitment to the improvement and growth of Women’s lacrosse in SA. All members have been strong communicators for their clubs but also good ambassadors of the sport in general. The umpiring group for their commitment to rostering, umpiring and education. LSA Board, LSA TV and LSA Staff Members for their support and efforts during season 2019.

TRISH ADAMS, DIRECTOR OF WOMEN’S COMPETITION

9 Lacrosse SA – 2019 Annual Report

MEN’S COMPETITION COMMITTEE REPORT The Men’s Competition Committee met from December 2018 to November 2019 with the main topics of discussion being:

Super League/Mad March State League, Division 1 and Division 2 schedules

- Re-arranging of finals to fit in with WILC - 2nd annual charity round

Open communication between ALRA and MCC Partnership with Cascade/Maverik finalised Support SA Indoor Lacrosse League

- LSA owned asset - Increase marketing/awareness - Administrational and financial support as required

Year in review: In my second year as Director, Men’s Competition I have to say I continued to learn plenty, but started to feel more comfortable in the role. MCC on socials - Getting more engagement with the MCC, we went live on a private Facebook page and messenger group. This allowed us to communicate more regularly, reducing the need for face to face meetings, as most items could be discussed and voted on via these platforms. SAILL – The 2018/19 season was a 5 team competition for the first time in many years. Increased social media presence and live streaming via LSA TV. Super League/Mad March - The reintroduction of Super League, after an 8-year hiatus. The draft saw 60+ registrations and clubs see game action as a part of their preseason. Mad March was unsuccessful though, not enough men’s teams registering for the first time in many years. Super League also acted as a training mechanism for U18s preparing for the Easter U18s Championship and a tryout platform for the senior men’s state team, which saw an increase in registrations. ***I will be looking at incorporating the new World Lacrosse 6 v 6 format into our 2020 pre-season competition and working out how Mad March and State League can be 1 successful competition. Field season - Specific thanks to the entire community for supporting the decision to move the State League finals forward in support of the players, coaches, support staff and supporters that travelled for the WILCs. We saw an increase of night games for State League with the introduction of NA’s new lights. We adopted all FIL rule changes but actively decided against 15 min quarters, in line with the other states, for State League and Men’s Division 1. Cascade/Maverik partnership In our first year, LSA supplied 85+ helmets locally, 30+ googles and 20+ LX headgears (women’s helmets) along with varying sticks, equipment and products to our community. The not-for-profit structurer of LSA enabled the resale of these goods to become very affordable in the hands of Australian Lacrosse players and we look forward to continuing to offer this service. Looking forward: I’m excited for 2020. To continue the hard work that was done by the LSA and the MCC. Continue to tweak the current beliefs, structures and backbone of our game to refresh and accelerate the sport into what I think is a positive looking future. Special mentions: Our Men’s Committee – they have a genuine interest in developing and improving our sport as a whole. ALRA and club secretary/reps – for helping me work through scheduling issues week in and week out. Australian and state team representatives (players, coaches, staff and officials), Norwood oval working group, premiership teams and award recipients. Thanks to the other board members of Lacrosse SA for their support during the year.

STEPHEN MORTIMER, DIRECTOR OF MEN’S COMPETITION

Lacrosse SA – 2019 Annual Report 10

DEVELOPMENT REPORT

2019 was another busy year at Lacrosse SA with much happening, both visible and behind the scenes. Our Development Officer, Marilyn Fuss, continues to spread the word of lacrosse far and wide, through the Quick Stix programme, organised school clinics and Lightning Carnivals, working with clubs trying to recruit as many new players as possible. This season saw many Friday night games for both our Men’s and Women’s State League competitions with the majority, if not all, live streamed through the dedication of Marty Baker and his team of camera crew and commentators at Lacrosse SA TV, allowing local and even interstate, or O/S people, who are interested in the games, to tune in if they are unable to attend. The ability to reach a greater audience than would ordinarily be at the game provides an opportunity for sponsorship of this service and other marketing potential will no doubt present itself as it grows. Our Finals series saw split WSL and MSL games/rounds with the MSL Semi Finals being played a week earlier with 1 game as a night game at Glenelg and the Preliminary Final played under the relatively new lights at North Adelaide Lacrosse Club, given the number of nights during the season and a night MSL Grand Final scheduled. Once again Norwood Oval was the host venue for 2 weeks of our finals, with the MSL playing 1 week earlier than all other Grand Finals to allow for Australian Indoor players to participate, who were heading to Canada for World Championships. Both weeks were extremely well attended in such a great venue, which helps promote and grow lacrosse and once again it was a very profitable exercise, providing a financial injection for much needed projects. The U/15 National Tournament was held in Adelaide this year and with many lacrosse clubs not being available to host the event for the full week, due in part to the Australian Masters Games, the decision was made to book City Mazda Stadium at West Adelaide Football Club, as Norwood wasn’t available either and the choice of venue proved to be an outstanding success with overwhelming praise on how the Tournament was presented and run. With 20 teams from Australia and New Zealand competing during the week on only 2 fields, with plenty of change room facilities, excellent viewing for spectators around the ground and under cover in the comfortable grandstand, while the coaches boxes in a football stadium provide an excellent Tournament office and commentary boxes, plus elevated filming platforms. The fenced stadium and the facilities provided, allowed LSA to run a gate on 3 of the 7 days and charge a very modest entry fee, which was generally accepted positively. Well done to Giulia Marion and her team for a such a successful event. Our biggest junior school event of the year was a 4 day Catholic Schools Carnival that has just concluded and saw lacrosse offered as sport for the first time, as a result of building our relationship with this school sporting organisation and was a resounding success. Nearly 200 teams from over 25 schools were involved across the 4 days, while introducing new players to our sport and allowing them to test their skills and compete against other teams and schools, after being exposed to lacrosse through school clinics throughout the year. The recently advertised position for a part time office based assistant through the sponsorship of Graham Hobbs and Living Choice Australia should prove to be a very significant step towards to growth of lacrosse in our state, as we are about to enter a very exciting period of transition from club based to school based U11 competition. The Lights Community and Sports Centre, a new $24M multi-sport indoor sporting complex at Lightsview, approximately 10km North East of Adelaide, has just opened in late October and through the foresight of Luke Oswald lacrosse is firmly entrenched as a stakeholder in this facility, which provides very exciting recruiting and development potential in this area, that may well flow on to surrounding areas as well. There are 2 of the 5 courts with indoor lacrosse markings and the exposure of lacrosse being played alongside other sports and being so visible to the many users of the facility is indeed a fantastic promotional opportunity. Senior and junior competitions are already underway and LSA has a year round booking on a Wednesday night and another booking on Saturday afternoons over summer, providing plenty of programming options to expose many existing and new players to the game at this facility. With so many courts and the ability to book the centre for major events, there is great potential to explore large scale indoor lacrosse tournaments, whether that be contact or non-contact, across all age groups from juniors to masters. We also have some major activity at our local lacrosse clubs, with Brighton Lacrosse Club having new clubrooms being built for the 2020 season through a redevelopment of all 3 sporting clubs in that area through the City of Holdfast Shores and work will soon get under way at Sturt Lacrosse Club with the redevelopment of The Women’s Memorial Playing Fields, which includes a new artificial pitch and clubrooms.

TIM DICKSON, DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

11 Lacrosse SA – 2019 Annual Report

DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR REPORT 2019 was a strong year for development in Lacrosse. This includes: Schools Clinics and Carnivals

- West School CARNIVAL at Glenelg LC 350 students, 41 teams from 6 schools. - Southern School Carnival at Sturt LC, 350 students, 41 teams from 8 schools. - Southern School Carnival at Brighton LC, 300 students, 32 teams from 5 schools. - Northern School Carnival at ETP LC, 260 students, 30 teams from 4 schools.

These events are significant in promoting lacrosse to a broad school base building on clinic work and encouraging participation. Catholic Schools Carnivals This year Lacrosse was added to the Catholic school’s sports calendar where we ran a 4 day carnival with 199 Teams from 25 schools with 1500 kids playing Lacrosse which was a huge success. This has provided a regular competition event for all Catholic schools and ongoing development/Recruiting opportunities. This has been a growth area particularly with the development of a strong relationship with SACPSSA Head - Darren Elliot. Lacrosse will be placed in a permanent position on the Catholic Sporting Calendar. This provides a regular competition event for all Catholic schools and ongoing development opportunities. Other

- ACHPER PE week Carnivals to 10 schools and building relationships with PE teachers and follow up with clinics. - Tea Tree Gully SAPSASA sporting carnival including clinics for 600 kids from 14 schools. We have already introduced kids into

the new Lightsview competition from this carnival.

Overall: 19,075 children being introduced to Lacrosse over the last 12 months with the sport now being more widely recognised in school sectors. Sporting Schools - Quick Stix We have run sessions in 40 schools this year and the program is growing through word of mouth so Quick Stix has proven to be a great initiative to allow us to have Lacrosse in more schools than ever. MARILYN FUSS, DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR

This certificate is endorsed by both the Australian Lacrosse Association and Lacrosse SA and is an introductory level course which teaches the fundamentals of coaching lacrosse (drills, skills and game play), behaviour management, communication, and First Aid. To complete this qualification, students were required to put the knowledge and skills they learn in the theory tasks into practise. 20 students from all areas in South Australia participated in 2019 which resulted in 20 high school students volunteering their time at club level for coaching roles. This certificate has also recently been approved as a full certificate which now qualifies it to be used as a Year 12 subject for 2020.

DIRECTOR OF OFFICIATING REPORT

The 2019 season has continued to present challenges for the officiating fraternity. These challenges have again been overcome due to the dedication and perseverance of many individuals so off the bat, I would like to thank all those that pulled on the black and white this year, we could not have done it without your support no matter how big or small, together we got there! In the National arena, South Australia’s leaders continue to represent and I report the following appointments: Martin Kiploks was re-appointed as the Umpire in Charge of Australia, Tammy Varga was re-appointed as the South Australian Umpire in Charge and Nat Owens was appointed as Deputy Umpire in Charge, all serving on the WNTC. Bradley Edwards has been elected for his first term as the Deputy Referee in Chief of South Australia on the MNTC. As has been the case in previous years, the South Australian leadership group representing officiating at the ALA level are some of the most prevalent officials in the country and were are in a better position locally for having their knowledge. South Australia again had strong representation at National events and the level of South Australian officials was highlighted as we had officials representing Lacrosse SA in every championship match this year, a credit to the individuals and their mentors. Attendance at National events continues to be the best way to progress as an official and I congratulate everyone that took part in 2019 while encouraging more people to volunteer into the future. At the International arena, 2019 saw the newly branded World Lacrosse U19 Women’s World Championships in Peterborough, Canada. South Australia had three representatives in Martin Kiploks (Assessor), Tammy Varga (Umpire) and Nat Owens (Umpire). Massive congratulations to all three who represented Australia with great success. Abuse of officials continues to be a scourge on all sports and is making headlines far too often. Lacrosse is not exempt from this scourge and as a community we need to work together to stamp this behaviour out. I will be working with clubs, and the wider community to ensure education is provided, and Lacrosse SA will continue to take a hard line approach in response to indiscretions. Finally, bylaw reform is currently being worked on to enable my officiating committees are able to cover all games during season 2020. This year again saw a shortage of officials including playing officials resulting in individuals having to miss games, do multiple games and at times games were delayed. I will be working toward ensuring we have a larger pool of officials without compromising standards, which will ultimately improve the competition as a whole. Once again, I thank all officials, assessors and volunteers for their contribution this year and look forward to continuing our growth and successes into 2020. JONATHON KIPLOKS, DIRECTOR OF OFFICIATING

DIRECTOR OF PROMOTIONS

To say it has been a busy year for promotions is a massive understatement. With LSA TV going to new heights from a broadcasting perspective and a number of new projects celebrating club personnel. Add to this we have been working strongly to increase our sponsorship impact and it has indeed been a busy year One of the biggest focuses on the off season was to lock in a major sponsor and raise valuable funds that could lead to the addition of a new paid position to help coordinate development and recruiting aspects of LSA operations in addition to assisting clubs with their own recruitment strategies as we transition to more of a schools based competition at the sub junior level over the next 5 years. We are pleased to announce that last week this job was advertised and hope to have it in place by the end of November. We thank the ongoing support of Living Choice Australia who came on board and supported LSA with $15K to enable this development coordinator position to be put in place and help to further support our focus on increasing the growth of our great sport. LSA TV grew even more this year from a broadcast perspective with growth in number of games covered in addition to providing these games on both face book and YouTube. This includes the SA Indoor League (jointly with ALN), State League field season including all finals plus a number of other Senior and junior finals, the 6v6 trial games (in conjunction with World Lacrosse and ALN) coverage of the Aussie U19 exhibition games against New Zealand and the Super league Grand Finals. We enhanced our broadcasts with the introduction of on-field mics on coaches and umpires taking us closer to the game, and while we encountered a number of technical issues throughout the year we are working hard to smooth out these issues and will be looking to purchase a new laptop that will be dedicated for LSA TV production purposes for the 2020 season. LSA TV was excited to have our first sponsor on board with Traditional Group through Wayne and Raylene Sutton which allowed us to upgrade our equipment and cover our operating expenses for 2019 we thank them for their support and welcome others to come on board for 2020 I also want to thank the merry band of the LSA TV crew that help put together the broadcasts each time it cant be done without your support. Throughout the year we had a total of Producers: Marty Baker and Scott Gill Commentators: Tony Watts, Lynton Arscott, Craig Schicker, Hannah Gough, Stephan Guerin, Luke Keesing, Sam Kilford, Ryan Gaspari, Charlotte Whinnen, Luke Roberts, Steve Mortimer, Kieran Sandow, Trish Adams and many other special guest commentators. Camera Men: Brayden Munn, Christian Williams, Michael Hood, Bryan Cahill, Alen Marenkovic. Broadcast Stats Games Covered: 38 Peak Views: 2.5K Peak Reach: 10.6K One of the big focuses this year was to celebrate the clubs and their players and volunteers. This year we introduced the Club Person of the Week, Player spotlight and Club legends segments which highlighted people that have excelled at club level. We will be looking to expand these in 2020 and generate a more efficient way of sourcing the information from clubs to make these releases more regular and consistent. Another Big project was the game changers documentary highlighting the successes and trials of the 1985-95 Women’s state team that was inducted into the SA Sports Hall of Fame at the awards dinner last November. We also have 2 nominations in this year SA Sports Award with Trish Adams up for Coach of the Year while Jono Kiplocks is up for Official of the year. I want to reiterate my comments from the LSA Dinner regarding how good Lawrence McGill (EX Photography) and Chris North (Eagles Lax Photography) for the tireless work these 2 put in to bring us the awesome photos week in week out that we all love to like and share. I encourage all to support these 2 in any way you can. 2020 will continue to be a massive year for the promotions of LSA we will continue to build upon the sponsorship developed in 2019 and continue to grow our production to be bigger and better and bring plenty of content. MARTIN BAKER, DIRECTOR OF PROMOTIONS

15 Lacrosse SA – 2019 Annual Report

STATE TEAMS REPRESENTATIVE Lacrosse South Australia was well represented at all Australian Lacrosse National Tournaments and Championships. This representation requires significant planning and collaboration. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people within the lacrosse community who have made themselves available to offer advice, support and time to enable participation, growth and development for LSA players and coaches. Our community is blessed to have members who are highly skilled and have a wealth of knowledge and experience, in particular I would like to acknowledge Giulia Marion and Trish Adams for their tireless efforts. In addition to this, thank you so much to the many coaches, team managers and supporters who have all contributed towards our successful representation. The representation program requires ongoing support from clubs. In particular, for making their fields available for LSA trainings. Field availability and suitability is an ongoing challenge, especially over the off season when summer sports have field access. Thank you to the many clubs who have provided volunteers to set up fields, open facilities and provide catering for LSA trainings throughout the season. The Under 15 National Tournament is a significant event to host and presents challenges for clubs to host due to a number on contributing factors. This season, the LSA board trialled hosting this tournament at West Adelaide Football Club. The feedback from member associations, states, players and supporters was overwhelmingly positive and Lacrosse South Australia has set a high bench-mark for other states to follow. The desire for our young players to participate in this event is growing and we were overwhelmed by the number of players who trialled this season. To enable growth, development and inclusion of all abilities, LSA fielded 7 teams totalling 115 players and 21 support staff. Our U18 Men’s and Women’s teams travelled to Perth for the 2019 National Championship, where we were extremely competitive in both competitions. All players participated in a comprehensive training program which ultimately saw the LSA U18 women’s team, under the guidance of Oliva Parker, Addie Cunningham and Mel Williams win the championship. LSA successfully fielded teams at the Senior National Championships for field and box competitions. Player participation continues to be a challenge at this level and LSA is part of an active working party to review the format of senior national competitions. ANITA LEWIS, STATE TEAMS REPRESENTATIVE
