The Master Builders Apprentice of the Year Awards incorporating the Ric New Awards showcase the quality of overall standard of achievement of apprentices and young achievers employed within the WA building & construction industry. Applicants are assessed on their overall standard of achievement and potential. Many of our past winners have become successful contractors and builders today, who have gone on to win other Master Builders’ Awards.



Applicants will be assessed on their overall standard of achievement and potential, taking all the information provided in this nomination form into consideration.

Three finalists will be selected for each category from whom one will be announced as the winner.

Judges are selected by Master Builders and no correspondence will be entered into, as the decision of the judging panel will be final.

ABOUT THE AWARDS



Applicants will be assessed on their overall standard of achievement and potential, taking all the information provided in this nomination form into consideration. Please complete each section of this entry form. Address all criteria and where there is insufficient space, please attach any additional information. Please include photocopies of testimonials and/or awards, trade results and trade certificates. Please ensure as much information as possible is provided in the entry as the judges review the submissions to determine the winners of each category.

Requirements for all Entries: 9 A completed entry form. 9 A description of the apprentice that addresses the judging criteria (Max 1pg per criteria). 9 Supporting documentation (Eg. copies of results, awards & experience references). 9 Please provide one (1) photo on USB (or by emailing to [email protected]) of your apprentice - one head

shot at a resolution of 300dpi, image size of 210mm x 297mm in jpeg format. The photo will be displayed at the awards night, so please provide a high-quality, respectable image.

9 Photos of physical examples of apprentices work conducted to be reviewed by the judging panel. 9 A synopsis/letter from the Apprentice detailing the most interesting work completed undertheir apprenticeship,

or what they are most proud of. In particular, noting unusual projects or work undertaken displaying a high level of skill.

A panel of three independent industry Judges (representatives of the building and construction industry familiar with, and holding experience in training and apprenticeships) will review each entrant’s submission and award one winner and two finalists for each category. A second round of judging will take place following the category results being determined, where a selection of Apprentices will be interviewed (in person, or over the phone in extenuating circumstances) by a panel of judges, each vying for the title of overall Apprentice of the Year. x Work ethic x Personal skills x Trade skills x Relationship with fellow workers and contractors x Ability to work unsupervised x Ability to think laterally x Level of competency x Academic results and awards x Non-academic awards, prizes or achievements x Work undertaken for the community or other work experience

x All forms must be fully completed, signed and received by the closing date of entries. x Master Builders reserves the right to refuse any entry, withdraw incomplete entries or remove entries

which do not meet the minimum criteria. x The judges must be satisfied that the entrant meets the criteria established for the awards. x Apprentices must be registered with the WA Department of Training & Workforce Development. x All documents submitted remain the property of Master Builders. x Any material supplied with the entry may be reproduced in media releases, publications, websites and

other promotional material at the discretion of Master Builders. The entrant indemnifies Master Builders against any claims in respect of copyright. Master Builders and associated media accept no responsibility for incorrect details, spelling or other incorrect information stated on the entry forms. MAJOR AWARD CATEGORIES Winners from across all categories compete for the best Major Awards. These are non-entered category as the best overall scoring Apprentices from all entries received automatically become finalists for these awards.

APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR (non-entered)Recognises overall best building and construction industry apprentices across all categories who have demonstrated commitment to their training. Applicants will be assessed on their overall achievement in studies and on-the-job training.

BEST REGIONAL APPRENTICE (non-entered)Recognises building and construction industry apprentices who have demonstrated commitment to their training. Applicants will be assessed on their overall achievement in studies and on-the-job training. The overall winner from winning Goldfields-Esperance, Geraldton-Midwest, Great Southern, South West and Kimberley-Pilbara Apprentice will go into the running for the ‘Apprentice of the Year’ Award, to be presented in Perth.

APPRENTICE CATEGORIES Awards which recognise a factor of Apprenticeship. Apprentices can be nominated for more than one category.

BEST BRICKLAYING APPRENTICECandidates undertaking a Bricklaying or Bricklaying (Housing) apprenticeship in the calendar year. Candidates may be from a Group Scheme or directly indentured to an employer.

APPRENTICE ENCOURAGEMENT AWARDThis new award category seeks to acknowledge a first or second year apprentice who you see as having significantly shone through, either from improvement and hard work, commitment to the employer, staff or other. This award is not based on academic ability but purely it is an acknowledgement from you to a worthy and well deserving apprentice.

BEST CARPENTRY APPRENTICECandidates undertaking a Carpentry, Joinery or Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship in the calendar year. Candidates may be from a Group scheme or directly indentured.

BEST DIRECT INDENTURED APPRENTICEThe apprentice must be or have been indentured to an employer in the calendar year who is a current Master Builders member (builder or sub-contractor).

BEST ELECTROTECHNOLOGY (ELECTRICAL) APPRENTICE Candidates undertaking an apprenticeship in Electrotechnology. Candidates may be from a Group Scheme or directly indentured to an employer during the calendar year.

BEST FLOOR & WALL TILING APPRENTICECandidates undertaking a Wall and Floor Tiling or a Tile-laying apprenticeship in the calendar year. Candidates may be from a Group Scheme or directly indentured to an employer.

BEST PAINTING & DECORATING APPRENTICE Candidates undertaking a Painting & Decorating apprenticeship in the calendar year. Candidates may be from a Group Scheme or directly indentured to an employer.

BEST PLUMBING APPRENTICECandidates undertaking a Plumbing & Gasfitting apprenticeship in the calendar year. Candidates may be from a Group Scheme or directly indentured to an employer.

BEST FEMALE APPRENTICEFemale apprentice who is employed in a construction trade by any employer or by a Group Scheme during the calendar year.

BEST SOLID PLASTERING APPRENTICECandidates undertaking a Solid Plastering apprenticeship in calendar year. Candidates may be from a Group Scheme or directly indentured to an employer.

BEST INDIGENOUS BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION APPRENTICEIndigenous apprentices in any construction trade. Candidates may be from a Group Scheme or directly indentured to an employer during the calendar year.

MARK ALLEN MEMORIAL TRUST FUND APPRENTICE SAFETY AWARD This award is for construction trade apprentices from other Group Schemes or direct indentured during the 2019 calendar year who have demonstrated high standards of safety and commitment to safety on the job. An additional entry form is required for this category.

EMPLOYER CATEGORIES Awards which recognise employers or trainers of Apprentices.

EMPLOYER TRAINER OF THE YEARRecognises the building and construction industry employers who are committed to training. Applicants will be assessed on their overall commitment to providing training to employees/ apprentices.

MARK ALLEN MEMORIAL TRUST FUND EMPLOYER SAFETY AWARD This award is for an employer of a construction apprentice/s who has demonstrated high standards of safety and commitment to safety on the job in the 2019 calendar year. An additional entry form is required for this category.

MASTER BUILDERS-DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE-BMW HEAD CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR AWARDHead contractors that have achieved good results in employing trainees and apprentices during the past financial year, in accordance with the Government Building Training policy, and in relation to the Department of Finance’s Building Management and Works’ projects will be invited to make an entry for the Award.

The winner of the 2019 WA Master Builders Apprentice of the Year Award automatically receives a nomination into the Master Builders Australia Apprentice of the Year Award. This award will be presented at the following year’s Master Builders Australia National Awards. Master Builders is keen to promote the training of all

apprentices through its annual Apprentice Awards.
