Emanated from the tears of the compassionate Avalokiteshvara, peaceful White Tara is said to witness the suffering of beings through her seven eyes, and she soothes their fear, calms their anguish, heals their suffering— both individual and communal—and extends their lives. This is a lineage practice particularly relied upon in times of domestic and community turmoil and disharmony, and when personal or family health is threatened. White Tara practices have long been popular in Kagyu and Nyingma communities; this particular short practice was composed years ago by Sakyong Mipham to soothe illness, disharmony, and suffering in the Shambhala community. The lung (reading transmission) will be provided, and the course will be comprised of practice sessions and talks on compassion practice and the tradition of White Tara. Prerequisite: This course is open to practitioners who have a grounding in mindfulness meditation (at least one year) and who are ready to commit to a compassion practice. White Tara Our Shrine Room

    Kindful Resilience Introduction to Viniyoga

    with Jan Beange

MoveWell ~ BreatheWell ~ MindWell ~ Be Well

    August 6, 13 and 27 from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM

    DROP-INS WELCOME

"Your breathing is the closest you can come to a picture of your mind....When you're hungry, you breathe in a special way; when you're full, you breathe in a special way; when you're happy, you breathe in a special way; when you're sad, you breathe in a special way." Chogyam Trungpa -- The Path is the Goal Do you know how to use your breath to see the portrait of your mind? Does your practice allow you to become aware of the breath and the environment you have created around the breath? Do you want greater freedom and ease in body, mind and heart? Then dive into an exploration of Viniyoga with Jan Beange (RYT500), integrating gentle movement, breath, meditation and sound. Viniyoga methods create a deep connection between breath, body and mind. Through gentle breath-centric movement, you can learn how to use your breath patterns to discover, recover and coordinate with your fundamental well-being. Recognizing the present in this way enables body and mind to be synchronized for general health, well-being, natural ease and contemplative insight. For more information, please contact Jan at (415) 315-9871. Cost is $15.00 with sliding scale available.

Why is it? Looking up in the bluest of skies Through the copious gaps in the oaks I think I know where the sound originates. But, there's never a plane to be seen; Sky is too large for my mind

    About the Teacher:

Acharya Judith Simmer-Brown, Ph.D., is Distinguished Professor of Contemplative and Religious Studies at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, where she has taught since 1978. As a Buddhist practitioner since the early 1970’s, she became a student of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche in 1974, and was empowered as an acharya (senior teacher) by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche in 2000. Her teaching specialties are meditation practice, Shambhala teachings, Buddhist philosophy, tantric Buddhism, and contemplative higher education. Her book, Dakini’s Warm Breath (Shambhala 2001), explores the feminine principle as it reveals itself in meditation practice and everyday life for women and men.

    Sensory Awareness Session

August 31st 10:00 AM until noon Sessions will then resume in October

Sensory Awareness is a mindfulness practice through which we connect with our own natural intelligence and vitality; we discover what responds in us in the midst of change; and we learn to rely on our sensations as guides to the fresh terrain of each moment. When we surrender to our own natural responsiveness, we do rise up rooted like trees, ready to meet what comes. All of us face, or will face, moments of stress and difficulty in our lives. In these moments, can we return to our senses? Can we feel how we tighten or contract? Can we pause in the midst of tightness and open to the next breath and the next moment? The practice of Sensory Awareness provides tools for recognizing and living with immediacy and presence in all aspects of our lives. Classes involve a series of gentle and interesting experiments, and there are no prerequisites for these. These sessions will resume in October.

For further information, please contact Gene Tashima at (530) 756-5750

Being with Aging: An Exploration Mondays 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

In this series of conversations, we are exploring the challenges and opportunities of aging in a society of imbalances: between safety and freedom, between long life and quality of life; and between giving and receiving care. Through videos, readings and conversations, we are examining the experiences of aging in our community. Too often old age is seen as a diagnosis rather than as an opportunity for human dignity and possibilities.

Beginning July 29 we will read and discuss the book A Year to Live: How to Live This Year As if It Were Your Last by Stephen Levine.

You are welcome to jump in whenever you can, this is an on-going conversation. Please join us.
