New permanent teachers for 2020

Congratulations to our successful applicants

for the teacher positions recently advertised. Mrs Angela Tomiczek has been working with us for

five years and is thrilled to now have a (well deserved) permanent position. We are excited to

welcome Ms Bonnie Coady, presently at Wallerawang Public, to our staff commencing in 2020.

We had a very talented pool from which to select.

Due to dire weather, the Athletics carnival was postponed until tomorrow Thursday 15th August.

Best wishes to all of our competitors and many thanks to all the helpers who generously donate

their time and energy.

We are having the roof of the music room

and toilet block replaced. Work started last

week and is finishing this week.

Mrs Lanyon’s next event is the Upper Blue

Mountains Music Festival which will take

place at Katoomba High next week. Matinee

on Tuesday 20th and evening performance

on Wednesday 21st.

Summer uniform orders

A reminder that the closing date for all orders to be returned to the uniform shop is

Monday 19th August by 9am, along with a minimum 50% deposit. Minimal stock is kept

onsite so if your child needs new items for 2020, now is the time to order.

STAMPS Do you throw away your used stamps? If so, please tear off the stamp and bring it

to Sue in the school office for donation to the Red Cross. Money raised by the

foundation is used to support under-privileged families in Australia

ILLNESS AT SCHOOL AND NOTIFYIYING

Please do not send your child to school if they are sick. If your child has been vomiting or had diarrhoea, they must not have vomited or had runny

stools for a minimum of 24 hours (even if they feel better) as they may still be infectious. Staff have only the best interests of our students at heart when we ask this so as to avoid outbreaks in classrooms. We also have children with compromised immune systems at school for whom contracting these illnesses can have serious repercussions. It is important for these students that they participate actively in the day to day school program without any major limitations. Towards this end another major concern is if these children were to develop measles, chickenpox, whooping cough or influenza so I seek your cooperation in preventing this situation.

If your child has, or may have, measles, chicken pox or other infectious illness, I would ask that you please: 1. Do not send them to school. 2. Notify the School Principal as soon as possible. 3. Take them to your GP or medical centre to confirm diagnosis if possible. Thanking you in anticipation, Jane Davies Principal

A gentle reminder that all payments MUST be in by the

due date on the note. Owing to our Department of

Education system we cannot process money that comes in

after the closing date. You may find that the online payment may seem to work as this is the bank ’s system but the money

cannot be processed for that event and will be put into credit for your future use. If finance is an issue PLEASE complete the

assistance form BEFORE the due date. You are more than welcome to reimburse us after the date.

PAYMENTS

items in the office and at the moment they are short

on tracksuit pants, especially in the smaller sizes, and large jumpers. Any donations will be gratefully be accepted.

SECOND HAND UNIFORMS

STAGE 2 SCIENCE FAIR Stage 2 invited the school to our science fair in the hall early this term. In

the science fair, we displayed what we have learned about minibeasts

around the world, such as ladybugs, scorpions and bed bugs. We loved

answering questions about where they are found, what they can do, what

they eat and get eaten by and their life cycle. Some interesting facts we

learned include:

-Monarch butterflies can travel over 160km a day

-Bats enjoy eating scorpions

-Ladybugs can grow to 1.8cm in size

MUSIC NEWS BPS String Ensemble performs at the Opera

House

On Thursday the 1st of August, the 4

members of the BPS string ensemble went

to the Opera House to play the violin with

200 other string musicians and 700 recorder

players, in the Festival of Instrumental

Music. We prepared with a 4 hour rehearsal

and played to a full house in the evening. It

was an incredible experience and we

worked very hard on our pieces with our

wonderful teacher Marion Walker.

Festival of Instrumental Music—Recorders

Last week we had the honour of performing solos on the recorder at the Concert Hall of

the Opera House, as part of the Festival of Instrumental Music. We both felt incredibly

nervous to be performing in front of over two thousand people in the audience and over

seven hundred other recorder players on the stage! Our hearts were beating fast and our

legs were shaking but we performed together without any mistakes. We got such a thrill

when our names were announced as soloists from Blackheath Public School. In the end it

all went really fast and it was over before we knew it. We had an amazing time, one that

we will remember forever. It was one of the best days of our lives.

STAGE 1 ART GALLERY EXCURSION Stage 1 had a wonderfully exciting excursion to the Art Gallery of NSW and Botanic Gardens on Wednesday, 31st July. It was a very early start at school, but we excitedly boarded the bus and we were off by 7.30am!

The trip to Sydney was long, but we knew we had nearly reached our destination as soon

as we saw the beautiful Harbour Bridge. Bus number two had a little bit of an accident with an impatient taxi, but everyone was fine and we were lucky that we had an off duty policeman as a parent helper on the bus who was very brave and helpful!

Once we eventually made it to the Gallery, we were divided into groups and enjoyed a very informative tour of the gallery. We focused on the indigenous art and we learnt

many amazing facts about Aborginal art. We looked at other artworks, and we even saw a real Vincent Van Gogh painting!!

Lunch in the Botanic Gardens was magnificent. We were spoilt with beautiful weather

and lovely views across the Harbour. We also saw the real Bottle Tree and Iron Gates from the book “Alexander’s Outing” that we have been reading in class. The Ibis’s made eating lunch tricky, but we had a lovely time!

All the teachers would like to congratulate Stage 1 on their excellent respectful behaviour, and to all the parent helpers for spending the day with us.

NAIDOC EXCURSION

Following the positive response from our first workshop, we will be running another

Math’s Workshop for parents in Week 5—Wednesday, 21st August between 12pm

and 1pm to give you ideas for supporting your children in Maths. The workshop will

be held in Mr Yeong’s room which is located on the first floor of the main building. Mr Kelly and Mr Yeong

Last Tuesday morning, a small group of students attended a special excursion with Mrs Gillian, Ms Booth, Cat Corkins and

Ms Lamond, joining students from several other schools. We were picked up on a Big Red Bus, and travelled to Govetts

Leap to attend the Blue Mountains Heritage Centre, where we walked through the cleansing smoke and learnt a great

deal about Aboriginal history and tools from Chris Tobin. A highlight of the day was when Chris greeted us in Dharug, and

surprised some of our students who recognised their language! We then went for a short walk through the bush to make

some handprints on a tree at the lookout before being driven back to school. Thanks to the organisers, Fantastic Aussie

Tours and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services.

Premier’s Reading Challenge 2019 - the End is Nigh!

The final date for you to finish entering your reading records is just two and a half weeks away! Your entries need to be in by Friday 30th August, but I have another couple of weeks after that to coach the last few of you over

the line. I am immensely proud of the 17 students who have finished so far, but there are another EIGHTY-ONE of you who have started entering your books and not finished! I’d like to see as many of you as possible finish this year. Go, you reading legends! Here is a list of all those wonderful people who have already finished and

Book Parade and Bake-a-Book Day

Coming up on Monday 9th September,

we will be having a cracker of a day for

literature! After lunch we will be

holding our biennial book parade, and

parents will be invited to come along

and enjoy the spectacle. On the same

day we’ll be holding our inaugural

Bake-a-Book competition, an idea

shamelessly stolen from a very

successful, delightfully fun, calorie-laden event at Wentworth Falls Public School. The

basic idea is a cake decorating competition where children create a baked masterpiece

decorated to look like a cover, a scene, a character or a theme from a book. Cakes are

then sold to raise funds for library resources, which benefits the whole school

community. Deliciously. A note explaining in more detail will be forthcoming closer to

the event.

Lydia Williams’ soccer ball

I was lucky enough to win a soccer ball signed by Lydia Williams early this term, and I’d like to thank the P&C for giving me the opportunity to auction it at the Trivia Night last weekend. It raised $140 for the library! Thanks to everyone who won, and congratulations to the lucky high bidder (I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be a secret, so I’m keeping quiet!) Along with the soccer ball, I also won a copy of Lydia’s new picture book, Saved!!! This gorgeous book, about giving it a go and finding your “thing” is now available for loan from the library.

Borrowing

Students are welcome to borrow, even if it’s not their library day. Just ensure you bring a library bag and have no overdue books and you can borrow at lunch time on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, and after school any day Ms Lamond is in the library (which is most days). You will not be allowed

to borrow without a library bag (no, a hat or a jumper is not an appropriate substitiute!) Please make sure you return all overdue books. If you know you have lost or damaged a book, please see Ms Lamond to find out how much you owe, and payment can be made to the front office or to Ms Lamond.

KOALAs

By now every class has read all ten picture books selected as finalists in the children ’s choice awards. By the end of term 3,

all students will be invited to vote for their favourite, as well as voting in the other three categories. So if there are other

finalist books you want to read before choosing, get borrowing!

Thank you to all the people who braved the snow to attend the BPS Trivia Night on Saturday night! It was a really fun night and raised over $2500 for the P&C to continue to support the school and families. The event wouldn’t have happened without such a huge effort from Julie Kingswood and Mel McGrath - thank you both sooooooo much! Also, a massive thank you to the local businesses that contributed

so generously to our auction items and raffle prizes- - what an awesome community we have!

The BPS Disco is coming up on Friday, 23rd of August.

The theme is 80’s Fluro! Kinder & Stage 1 can dance the night away from 5–6pm, then Stage 2&3 will be partying on from 6.15–7.15pm. We need 6-8 people to help on the night

with ticket sales, food prep, serving and clean up at the end of the night. Get in touch!

Our annual Father’s Day stall will be held on Tuesday, August 27th*, between 9-11am.

Gifts will be between $5-10. *Sorry, the date was incorrect in the last newsletter! Are there a few mums who can help out on the day, from 8.30-11am?

Our first ever Obstacle Course Colour Run is on the 20th Of September. The link on the

note wasn’t quite right so if you haven’t found your way there already, go to https://nfp.everydayhero.com/au/blackheath-public-school-p-c to start collecting sponsors! And yep- we’re going to need lots of parents and carers to help set up, throw coloured powder and pack up from 12noon-3pm on the 20th September. We’d love to hear from you

if you can help out (and don’t mind getting coloured!)

The P&C is FUN!!! (see, we even use fun fonts sometimes!)

And it would be MORE FUN with MORE PEOPLE! The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, 16th September, at 6.30pm in the library. Due to changes to our By-Laws, this will also be the night of our Annual General Meeting (AGM), where all P&C Executive positions are declared vacant. It’s the perfect time to join the committee and take on a role- all the big events

will be over and you’ll have time to find your feet before the new school year begins! If you can’t make the meetings, or want to find out more about getting involved, please talk to Morgan, Ally, Ali or Stuart at school or contact us via email blackheathpublicschool@pandcaffilliate.org.au or Facebook @BlackheathPandC. But you don’t have to wait for a meeting, or even come to one- just get in touch! Does anyone even read this?
