Let’s take a walk down memory lane with theAlamo Bridge Club as our subject of interest.

Some of you may have to wander a little fartherback in time than others. The club was first

established in the 1960s and remained inbusiness until 2005. It was located at several

locations over the years, from Mulberry St. toLanark and Austin Highway, to Botts Lane. Did

you know that the “Alamo” was once owned byBobby Wolfe (yes, that Bobby Wolfe) and Paul

Lewis (Everette’s dad)? Other owners includedBetty Jo Mangan, Wanda Toupes, and a

consortium of Bill Hoffman, Eloise Jackson, DellaMac Arthur, Marie Bailey, and Barbara Parker.

Barbara took over sole ownership of the club

from the latter group and eventually sold theclub to Rich Lampman. During its lifetime, the

Alamo Bridge Club was an integral part of theSan Antonio bridge scene. Some memorable

players who played at the Alamo are E. X.Snovel, Jacque and Ziggy Tucker, Peggy Fritsch,

Dale Bennett, Barbara and Norm Caruthers,“Biig” Al Lochli, John “Toll Free” Watkins,

Darlene Riely, and Roger and Marge Boeka. Intune with Bob Hope’s theme song, Thanks for

the Memories, here’s to your taking fond travelsdown memory lane as a result of this reminder.

And, Remember the Alamo -- Bridge Club!

Remember The Alamo -- Bridge ClubMorning Side Series (Tuesday thru Saturday 10am)

Mary Ellen passed away in February 2017 after a long battle with

cancer. She was a coal miner’s daughter who was the first in herfamily to attend college, with a teaching scholarship to West

Virginia University in Morgantown.

She was a long-time bridge player, earning masterpoints tobecome a Silver Life Master. She translated her teaching

experience from the University by donating her time to novicebridge players at Fair Oaks Ranch Country Club. She also loved to

play golf. The LGA at Fair Oaks Country Club purchased anddedicated a tree in her honor on one of the golf courses. Mary

Ellen, with her southern hospitality, was a beloved friend to manyin both the bridge and golf communities. She is missed as a friend

and bridge partner.
