Vancouver’senormoussoundstageswerehometo thephysical setscreated forKringleCottage,Santa’sWorkshop, the North Pole’s town hall, a suburban rooftop for Santa’s-in-training and aPhoenixshoppingmall.TheentireSoundstageGbecametheinteriorandexterioroftheshoppingmallinspiredbyDesertRidgeMarketplaceinPhoenix.Thesetwasdividedintothreebasicparts:amainplazawithpalmtrees,adanceplazaanditssurroundingpassages,anditwassurroundedbybluescreen,asanythingabove16feetwouldbecreatedwithvisualeffectsinpost-production.Making rainyVancouver feelbelievableas sunnyPhoenixwasachallenge,butcinematographerRussellCarpenterknewexactlywhathewasdoing.“Throughcleverscheduling,thebrillianceofourdirectorofphotography,andsomegoodluck,wemanagedtopullitoff,”laughsproductiondesignerMaherAhmad.“It’snotthathardtomakeChicagolooklikeNewYork,buttomakeVancouverlooklikePhoenix,that’shard,”KringleCottage,whichoccupiedtheentireStageIandincludedbothindoorandoutdoorportions,wastheoneseteveryonelovedtovisit.“Youwalkinandthelevelofdetailinthesetdecoratingwasjustsoimmenseandsorich,withlayeruponlayerofdetail,”saysexecutiveproducerJohnG.Scotti.“Thefirelightgaveitthatreallyhomey,warm,superinvitingfeelingandmadeyouwanttositdownandtakeoffyourcoatandrelax.”Ahalf-timberedTudorandJacobethanstylehomeindesign,completewithsnowintheyardandaworking ice path, Kringle Cottage is amulti-generational, two-story family home that has beenaroundfordecades.“Everyaspectoftheproductiondesign;thesets,thelocations,theprops,thedecor,thewardrobe,wasmeticulouslythoughtout,”saysKendrick.Noelle’sroomisfilledwithkeepsakesfromherchildhoodthatshecan’tletgoofjustyet,and,beingverycreative,shehasanartdeskthatsheusestodesignandcreateornateholidaypop-upcards.“YoucouldliterallyopeneverydrawerinNoelle’sroomandtherewouldbeChristmas-ystuffinit,”

saysKendrick.“Allthatdetailisreallyhelpful,becauseitfeelslikethisfullyrealizedNorthPole,anddoingthingslikemylittlebitskatingoutthefrontdooroftheKringleCottagefeelsveryimmersive.”OneofthebiggestchallengesfacedbytheproductionwasbuildingaNorthPolefromthegroundup,andWhistlerOlympicPark,a legacyvenue fromthe2010WinterOlympics,was theperfectsetting.Picturesqueandbeautiful,thesitewasoriginallyconstructedfortheOlympicskijumpingandNordiceventsandwaslargeenoughtoaccommodatethemassiveset,aswellasthesupportvillageofheatedtents,trailersandtrucksneededtotakecareofcastandcrew,whichonsomedaysswelledtonearly500people.ThedesignfortheNorthPolevillageisamoderntakeonthetownofBedfordFallsfromtheclassicChristmasfilm“It’saWonderfulLife,”oneofLawrence’sfavoriteChristmasfilms.Thesetconsistedof19buildingsaroundanactualicepond,andsomeofthebuildingswerequitesubstantialinsize.Theiceponditselfwaslargerthanaprofessionalfootballfield(160ft.longx100ft.wide).“What’slovelyisyoudoallthese3Dcomputerrenderingsanddrawingsandillustrationsformonths,andthenwhenyoufinallyseeitinfrontofyou,it’sjustsoamazing,”saysLawrence.LawrencewantedaNorthPolethathadahistorywithinteriorsthat lookedrealandlivedin,yetweresomewhatmagicalatthesametime.“ThisisthefirstNorthPoleIknowofthat’sactuallybeenbuiltoutside,”saysAhmad.“Thestructureshadtobebuilthigheroffthegroundthannormaltoaccommodatefortheexpectedsnowfall.”Over200carpentersandpaintersworkedtirelesslyforfourmonthstobuildthetownwhiledozensofbuyersandsetdresserswereacquiringjusttherightitemstofillthosesets,allofwhichhadtobeChristma-fied.Itwasamassiveundertakingwithcarpentersandpainterstrippingovergripsandelectricianstryingtomountelaborateriggings,all inanefforttofinish intime,butthefabulousresultsmade itallworthwhile.Whenitcametowardrobe,costumedesignersGaryJonesandMitchellTravershadtheirworkcutoutforthemwithcloseto100speakingrolesand300extras.TheysetupcostumeworkshopsinNewYork,TorontoandVancouverwhere30sewersandcraftspersonsworkedforfivemonthstodesign,fitandmanufacturethehundredsofoutfitsneededfortheNorthPoleandPhoenixsettings.Jones,TraversandteammadeeverythingfortheNorthPolecostumes,fromshoestotopstopantstoheadwear,andtheelfcostumeswereeachcomprisedof5-10clothingitems,aswellascreatingmultipleoutfitsforNoelleandMr.Claus.WhileNoelleissomewhatofaslob,sheisstilloneofthemoststylishresidentsoftheNorthPolewithherownuniqueflair.Noelle’ssignatureoutfitsare:herred-golddressandshortShearlingcoatandherblueChristmasskatingoutfitlookfortheearlyNorthPolescenes;andthegreentunicdresswithpatchworkcast

~ You Know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen ~ BecauseSanta’sreindeerplaysuchavisibleandimportantrolein“Noelle,”visualeffectssupervisorArielVelascoShawdecidedearlyoninpre-productionthattheywouldbefullycomputer-generatedcharacterssothateachreindeerwouldhavetheirownuniquecharacteristics.“Eachhas itsownlookandpersonalitytodifferentiatewho’swho,”saysexecutiveproducerJohnG.Scotti.“WehaveourtakeonthetraditionalreindeercharacterseveryoneknowsandlovesandintroduceanentirelynewreindeercharacternamedSnowcone.”SnowconethereindeerisNoelle’sbestfriendandconstantcompanion.Hyperandunabletocontrolhisgiddiness,emotionsand/orhismovements,hedesperatelywantstobecomeapartofSanta’selitesledteam.TheanimationworkonallthereindeerwascompletedinMontreal,IndiaandLondonduringpost-productionwiththefilm’skeyvisualeffectsvendorMPC,thesamecompanythatworkedwithJonFavreauon“TheJungleBook”and“TheLionKing.”Duringfilming,humanactorsinbluevisualvisualeffectsonesiesstoodinasproxyreindeerto interactwiththeleadcastandbackgroundplayers.“We cast eight body doubles with a head height essentially the height of a reindeer, which isanywherebetween4’11”to5’3”,”saysShaw.“Theseindividualsactuallyhadtogetintoareindeerheadandwouldactwiththepersonalityofthereindeertheywereplaying.”For Santa’s flying sleigh that transports presents every year on Christmas, the special effectsdepartmentcreatedahydraulicgimblewhichnotonly lookedgood,but couldwithstandall theabuse it would take. Although the design work for the sleigh began one year before principalphotography,theactualconstructiontookjustthreemonths.Thechassiswasbuiltlikeacarandweighedmorethan1,000pounds,asitneededtobestrongforalltheabuseitwouldtake.“Ourgiantgimblewasshakenandtwistedanditdoveandwentuphighanditspunaround,”explainsAhmad.
~ Jingle Bell Rock ~ Writer-directorMarcLawrenceloveseverythingaboutChristmas:thesnow,thelights,thetoysandall the presents, but it is the holidaymusicwhich he ismost fond of. “There’s a long standingtraditionofJewsbeingenamoredofChristmasthatisalmostcliché,”hesays.“Maybeit’sbecauseitisnotspecificallyourholidaythatmakesChristmassoattractivetous,butifyoulookatthetopten Christmas songs, many of them have been written by Jews, like Irving Berlin and ‘WhiteChristmas.’”
