Buy Fresh Buy Local is a national organization that connects consumers to fresh, locally grown food through the development of a community-based network. After taking over the Chesapeake chapter in 2010, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation continues to work as the primary coordinator for the regional sector. Through education on sustainable agriculture, promotional events, and resources such as this guide, the Buy Fresh Buy Local Chesapeake program aims to inform the public on how purchasing locally produced food and goods benefits the health of the Bay, protects farmlands, boosts local economies, and supports our greater community. The mission of the Buy Fresh Buy Local organization is to increase knowledge of how consuming locally grown and produced goods benefits the environment, economy, and society, and to promote reliable sources of consciously produced products in the region. Each chapter engages their community through memberships and partnerships with local farms, markets, restaurants, and other businesses. In conjunction with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s goals of protecting the Bay’s health and longevity as a national treasure, Buy Fresh Buy Local Chesapeake encourages the growth of local food systems through the specific lens to “Save the Bay.”

Buy Fresh Buy Local Chesapeake works to connect residents of the Maryland Chesapeake region with opportunities to buy locally grown, sustainably produced food.
Buying local food and goods is an investment in bettering the community. Keeping your dollar local supports farmers and artisans employing your neighbors and paying them a fair wage, rather than largescale industrial farms thousands of miles away. Nearly all of the profit earned from locally produced items stays within the local economy, whereas only a few cents on the dollar would if it been produced elsewhere. Jobs created by locally produced food and goods help to foster a more prosperous community.
Locally grown food provides multiple environmental benefits. Sustainable farming operations compliant with best management practices, such as planting 35-foot streamside buffers of native trees and shrubs to absorb runoff of excess fertilizer into waterways, protect water quality and the health of the Chesapeake Bay. Additionally, shipping food thousands of miles releases significant amounts of greenhouse gasses and other air pollutants into the atmosphere. The Chesapeake Bay airshed extends more than nine times beyond the Bay’s watershed, comprising 570,000-square miles across 15 states and Canada. These emissions from food transportation as far away as Kentucky and Indiana contribute to algal blooms, which create devastating oxygen-poor dead zones in the Bay and contaminate waters with heavy metals and pollutants that harm fish and other wildlife. Buying local eliminates the need for transporting food and goods across thousands of miles, significantly decreasing the pollution associated with these products.
Local food also has numerous benefits for public health. With fewer steps between harvest and your table, locally grown food has fewer opportunities for contamination, which promotes a safer food system. Additionally, as produce travels fewer miles between farms and plates, each item has more time to fully ripen before harvest, taking on an unmatched depth of flavor. More delicious fruits and vegetables encourage consumers to give healthy produce a more starring role in their diet.
As we work to promote the health of the Chesapeake Bay, a key piece of the solution includes redefining what it means to be a steward of this national treasure. Every Chesapeake-region consumer’s choices affect the health of our waterways and the Bay, therefore education through materials such as this guide and other Chesapeake Bay Foundation programming is paramount to achieving our goals.

Supporting farmers markets allows for greater connection between farmers and consumers while working to lower the expansive carbon footprint of the standard American diet. Produce in the United States travels an average of 1,500 miles from farm to table, greatly affecting nearby air- and watersheds through vehicle emissions and packaging pollution. A CSA, or community-supported agriculture, is a system where consumers subscribe to a share of a farmer’s harvest, receiving produce on a weekly or biweekly basis throughout the growing season. CSA members invest upfront, helping farmers offset the sometimes-unpredictable costs associated with their operation. These shareholders are investing in production, not product, claiming fiscal responsibility for both the risks, which include bad crop seasons and pest infestation, as well as the reward: the harvest. CSA shares typically run spring through fall, with signups available just ahead of the first harvest and often continuing into the start of the season.

Sustainably minded practices in livestock rearing have myriad benefits for the planet and the health of the Bay and its waterways. Pasture and rotational grazing reduce topsoil erosion, improve soil structure and quality, aid in pollution filtration, and heighten air and water quality. Additionally, a grass-fed diet is also better for the cows, enabling their digestive systems to harness greater nutrient value than from traditional corn or soy feed, strengthening their immune systems and, ultimately, yielding a higher-quality meat product. Additionally, rotational and pasture-based are key components to improving soil quality and protecting the Chesapeake Bay.
The Maryland Grazers Network is led by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in collaboration with the University of Maryland Extension, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Maryland farmers. This network connects experienced beef, dairy, sheep, and poultry farmers with producers looking to expand their practices to be more sustainable and learn more about grazing techniques. The Grazers Network Project Team provides technical assistance and includes experts in pasture and forage management, financial planning, marketing, and funding resources. With collaboration from Future Harvest Chesapeake Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture, the Maryland Grazers Network provides funds for the Amazing Grazing Directory, which lists over 200 grazers in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, and West Virginia.
