MEDIA INFORMATIONThe Liberty Athletics Department is served by an athletics communications offi ce staff that works diligently to promote the individual and team accomplishments of student-athletes, coaches and staff . The offi ce members handle all sport and department communications and media relations needs, and work to serve the working media.

Credentials Requests for season and single-game credentials should be emailed to the appropriate communications representative at least 48 hours prior to the requested event. Due to space limitations, credentials will be issued to full-time journalists from media outlets that cover Liberty Athletics regularly and substantially or to representatives who regularly and customarily perform services for that outlet.

Work-Related Equipment BagsMembers of the media will be allowed to bring work-related equipment bags (laptop computers, radio/TV broadcast equipment, still and video cameras, etc.) through Media entrance near the East Ticket Booth. Work-related equipment bags will be searched by Williams Stadium security.

Postgame InterviewsPostgame interviews are held on the fi rst fl oor of the Liberty Football Center. Todd Wetmore, Liberty Associate AD for Communications, will ask for requests during the fourth quarter of the contest.

ParkingLiberty University has designated the Yellow lot on University Blvd. (Speakman Lot near the Liberty University Bookstore) as reserved media parking for home football contests. Please contact the Liberty Athletics Communications Offi ce to obtain a parking pass and information on how to access the lot on game day.

PhotographersLiberty University strictly enforces a photo credential approval policy designed to best allocate working credentials for photographers to maximize coverage in a safe, professional working environment. Unfortunately, it is not possible to accommodate all requests. Due to limited space, credentials will generally not be issued to freelance photographers without a specifi c assignment received in writing from the assigning organization. Photographers are to stay behind the red line that surrounds the playing fi eld and are not allowed in the team box on either sideline at Williams Stadium and are prohibited from going on the fi eld at any time. The designated work area for photographers during the 2019 season is on the second fl oor of the Williams Stadium Carter Tower.

matchup notes“4 DOWNS” WITH THE RAGIN' CAJUNS

Saturday's game will mark Liberty's fi rst road contest of the 2019 season. The Flames are just 1-7 in their last eight road openers, with the lone victory coming at Baylor on Sept. 2, 2017. Meanwhile, Louisiana will be playing its 2019 home opener. The Ragin' Cajuns have won their

fi rst home game of the season in 10 of the last 11 years, with the only exception being a loss to Boise State on Sept. 3, 2016.

Both Liberty and Louisiana are looking to bounce back from setbacks in their season openers. These two teams are not accustomed to slow starts in recent years. Liberty has not begun a season 0-2 since 2012, while the Ragin' Cajuns' last 0-2 start came in 2013. Both teams

feature relatively new head coaches. Hugh Freeze will be coaching his second game at Liberty, while Billy Napier is in his second season at Louisiana.

After facing zero teams from Louisiana during its fi rst 46 football seasons, Liberty will soon become well acquainted with Pelican State opponents. After Saturday, the Flames have three more matchups scheduled with Louisiana squads in the next two years (2020-21), includ-

ing one more with Louisiana and two with ULM.

Both Liberty and Louisiana committ ed 4+ turn-overs during season-opening losses to Power Five opponents. The Flames turned the ball over four times against Syracuse, while Louisi-ana committ ed fi ve miscues versus Mississippi State. Louisiana QB Levi Lewis has made only

four career starts, while Liberty QB Stephen Calvert has started 31 times.

LAST MEETING WITH A SUN BELT OPPONENT

OCT. 13, 2018LIBERTY 22, TROY 16LYNCHBURG, VA. (WILLIAMS STADIUM)

• A nine-yard TD pass from Stephen Calvert to B.J. Farrow with 2:23 remaining in the fourth quarter capped off the Flames' game-winning 14-play, 89-yard drive.

• Liberty's defense limited Troy to 293 total yards and forced three turnovers as the Flames halted the Trojans' sev-en-game road win streak.

• Calvert was 17-of-32 passing for 238 yards and two TDs.

• With Antonio Gandy-Golden sidelined for the game, Far-row stepped up for 101 yards on eight receptions.

A Liberty Win Would ...

• Maintain the Flames' perfect all-time record (4-0) versus Sun Belt Conference opponents.

• Avoid the Flames' fi rst 0-2 start since opening the 2012 season (Turner Gill's fi rst at Liberty) at 0-4.

• Make the Flames 1-1 after two games for the second straight year and the sixth time in the last seven seasons.

• Snap the Flames' four-game road losing streak.

• Halt Louisiana's four-game home winning streak and make the Flames the fi rst non-conference team to win at Cajun Field since Boise State on Sept. 3, 2016.

• Improve the Flames' all-time record to 4-6 when playing 1,000 or miles away from Lynchburg.

• Make Louisiana the 17th diff erent state where the Flames have won a game in program history.

2019 UNIFORM TRACKER

today's game at a glance

2: The 2019 season is Liberty's second as an FBS member, following 30 seasons of competition at the FCS (1-AA) level.

6: The 2018 Flames went 6-6, becoming the ninth team in NCAA history to win six or more games during its fi rst season of FBS competition.

7: Seven Flames have been selected in the NFL Draft. Most recently, Walt Aikens was taken by the Miami Dolphins in the fourth round of the 2014 Draft.

8: Liberty won eight Big South Conference titles (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016).

9: Hugh Freeze is Liberty's ninth head coach in pro-gram history.

10: Ten Flames have been named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.

10: Liberty won a program-record 10 games in 2008, fi nishing at 10-2.

11: Eleven 2019 Flames (Elij ah Benton, Michael Chorowicz, Ethan Crawford, Rion Davis, Dontae Duff , Zac Foutz, Frankie Hickson, Sam Isaacson, Da-mian King, Malik Matt hews and Thomas Sargeant) have completed bachelor's degrees and are cur-rently working toward master's degrees.

13: The Flames have posted a .500 or bett er record for 13 consecutive seasons (2006-18), going 94-55 during that span.

47: The 2019 campaign is Liberty’s 47th football sea-son.

25,000: The seating capacity of Williams Stadium was expanded to 25,000 for the 2018 season. The Flames have welcomed 20,000+ fans to Williams Stadium on seven occasions, including a stadi-um-record 22,551 for a Sept. 19, 2015 victory over Montana.

LIBERTY FOOTBALL BY THE NUMBERS

THERE'S A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHINGLiberty and Louisiana will be meeting on the gridiron for the fi rst time on Saturday.

This is the second straight week the Flames will be fac-ing a fi rst-time foe, after opening the season by playing host to Syracuse on Aug. 31.

Liberty will also square off with two more fi rst-time opponents later in the season, including Rutgers (Oct. 26) and BYU (Nov. 9).

The Flames will be playing in Louisiana for the fi rst time in program history. The Pelican State will be the 28th state Liberty has visited in its 47 seasons of playing football.

Liberty has never faced an opponent from Louisiana in program history.

SUCCESS VS. SUN BELTLiberty is 3-0 all-time against Sun Belt Conference foes (teams that were part of the conference at the time of the meeting).

55-48 OT win at Appalachian State (Oct. 11, 2014)41-33 win at Georgia State (Oct. 3, 2015)22-16 home win vs. Troy (Oct. 13, 2018)

That is the Flames' best record against any active FBS conference.

Sun Belt - 3-0Mountain West - 1-0Big 12 - 1-1Conference USA - 1-1MAC - 2-9American - 0-1SEC - 0-1ACC - 0-7

Liberty has never faced a member of the Big Ten or Pac-12.

The Flames are scheduled to face at least one Sun Belt opponent during six of the next seven years (2020-26).

FAMILIAR FOESDuring Hugh Freeze's last four seasons as Ole Miss' head coach (2013-16), Louisiana head coach Billy Napi-er was the wide receivers coach on Nick Saban's staff at Alabama.

Ole Miss and Alabama split their four meetings during those two seasons, with the Rebels claiming back-to-back victories in 2014 and 2015. However, the 2014 triumph has since been vacated.

Freeze has matched up against Louisiana twice as head coach, but Saturday will mark his fi rst visit to Cajun Field.

On Nov. 12, 2011, Freeze's Arkansas State Red Wolves notched a 30-21 home win over Louisiana.

Freeze's Ole Miss Rebels defeated Louisiana 56-15 on Sept. 13, 2014, but that win was later vacated.

MAKING CONNECTIONSLiberty redshirt senior OL Dontae Duff and Louisiana sophomore S Mekhi Garner both graduated from Po-teet High School in Mesquite, Texas.

BATTLING BOWL TEAMSLouisiana is the second straight 2018 bowl team Liber-ty is facing to begin the 2019 season, following its 24-0 season-opening loss to Syracuse.

The Ragin' Cajuns lost to Tulane in last year's Cure Bowl.

The Flames will later match up with 2018 bowl qualifi -ers Buff alo (Sept. 14), BYU (Nov. 9) and Virginia (Nov. 23).

Last season, Liberty knocked off a pair of bowl teams from the 2017 campaign, including Troy and New Mex-ico State.

HOME VS. ROADLiberty struggled in road games during its fi rst sea-son of FBS competition a year ago. The Flames went 1-5 away from Williams Stadium, with the lone victory coming at New Mexico (52-43 on Sept. 29, 2018).

Liberty has lost its last four road games entering the 2019 campaign and is allowing an average of 48.3 ppg in road contests at the FBS level.

Conversely, the Flames have fl ourished at home. De-spite its season-opening setback to Syracuse, Liberty owns a 5-2 home record as an FBS member.

ROAD WARRIORSLiberty is traveling more than 1,000 miles for the fi rst of three times this season (also at New Mexico State and BYU). This will be the fi rst season the Flames have ever traveled 1,000+ miles for a road game three or more times.

The Flames are 3-6 in program history when venturing more than 1,000 miles from Lynchburg.

Sept. 7, 1991 - 35-14 loss at Boise StateSept. 18, 1993 - 17-14 win at Texas StateSept. 24, 1994 - 35-7 loss at Boise StateNov. 21, 1998 - 45-35 loss at Cal PolySept. 15, 2012 - 34-14 loss at MontanaSept. 17, 2016 - 29-14 loss at SMUSept. 2, 2017 - 48-45 win at BaylorSept. 29, 2018 - 52-43 win at New MexicoOct. 6, 2018 - 49-41 loss at New Mexico State

WE'LL BE BACKAfter Saturday, Liberty will return home for three straight home games. The Flames will wecome Buff alo (Sept. 14), Hampton (Sept. 21) and New Mexico (Sept. 28) to Williams Stadium during the span.

The only other FBS teams who will play four home games before the end of September this season are Boston College, Michigan State, Pitt and Washington.

10: WR Antonio Gandy-Golden needs 10 receptions to overtake Pat Nelson for third place in program history. He is also 10 yards away from passing Kelvin Edwards for the third spot on Liberty's all-time re-ceiving yards list.

5/11: K Alex Probert needs fi ve made extra points to move into fi fth place all-time for the Flames. The redshirt junior is also 11 points away from becoming the fi fth Liberty kicker ever to reach 200 points.

114: RB Frankie Hickson is 114 rushing yards shy of 2,000 for his career. He has rushed for 114 or more yards fi ve times in his career.

300/404: QB Stephen Calvert's next 300-yard passing game will be the 13th of his career, breaking the program record he currently co-holds with Rob-by Justino. Calvert needs 404 passing yards to join Josh Woodrum and Justino as the only Flames ever to throw for 9,000 yards during their career.

LIBERTY'S RECORD WHEN ... Trends/Streaks• The Aug. 31 game against No. 22 Syracuse began Liberty’s second season at the FBS level and its fi rst as a fully bowl eligi-ble team for the 2019 season.• The Flames became the 130th FBS team in the country when the NCAA announced Liberty had completed its two-year FBS reclassifi cation process on Aug. 1, 2019.• The loss to Syracuse snapped Liberty’s two-game win streak in season openers following a 48-45 at Baylor in 2017 and a 52-10 win over Old Dominion at home in 2018 and a four-game home winning streak, dating back to the 2018 season.• The Louisiana game marks Liberty’s lone road game during the month of September, as the Flames will host Buff alo (Sept. 14), Hampton (Sept. 21) and New Mexico (Sept. 28) to round out the month’s schedule.

Coach Freeze Health TimelineThe start of the 2019 season has been a challenge for fi rst-year head coach Hugh Freeze due to back spasms that even-tually led to surgery. • Aug. 3 – Freeze leads Liberty during its fi rst practice of Au-gust Training Camp• Aug. 4 – Freeze meets with the media on Football Media Day following the team’s second practice of the year• Aug. 10 – Freeze started to experience back pain, but still coached Liberty during its fi rst full scrimmage of training camp• Aug. 11 – Freeze’s back pain worsened, forcing Liberty’s head coach to miss his fi rst practice• Aug. 15 – Freeze was transported from Lynchburg General Hospital to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Char-lott esville, Va. for further treatments • Aug. 16 – Freeze underwent back surgery and while in sur-gery, doctors found Freeze was also batt ling a serious staph infection• Aug. 21 – Freeze was released from University of Virginia Medical Center and relocated to the Fairfi eld Inn and Suites just off the Liberty University campus, allowing the football staff to meet with Freeze before and after practice sessions • Aug. 23 – Freeze held a press conference at the Fairfi eld Inn and Suites to answer the media’s questions about his health mid-afternoon and later in the day surprised the Flames by returning to practice with the help of a golf cart• Aug. 24 – Freeze witnessed his fi rst in-person practice in nearly two weeks when Liberty held a mock game practice one week prior to its home opener against Syracuse • Aug. 31 – For the fi rst time in his nine-year coaching career, Freeze coached from the press box, doing so from a hospi-tal bed and communicating to the team in the locker room through Webex video conferencing technology

Off ense• Liberty’s returning players accounted for 84.0 percent of the Flames’ total points scored in 2018 (335 of the team’s 399 total points).

• If Liberty was eligible for the national stat rankings in 2018 (was not due to FBS transition process), the Flames would have ranked No. 33 in the country in passing yards per game (261.5) and No. 34 in scoring off ense (33.3 points per game).• The Flames have had one of the more prolifi c passing off ens-es in the country the last two seasons, averaging 309.9 pass-ing yards per game in 2017 (3,409 yards and 29 TDs) and 261.5 yards per contest in 2018 (3,138 yards and 21 TDs).• The Flames fi nished their season opener against No. 22 Syr-acuse with 234 total off ensive yards, with 103 yards coming in the fi rst quarter (2nd – 7 yards; 3rd – 35 yards; 4th – 89 yards).• Liberty fi nished the Syracuse game with minus-four team rushing yards, its lowest total since rushing for minus-23 yards in the 2016 fi nale at Coastal Carolina.• Liberty’s lowest rushing total in four seasons was not helped by the fact that Liberty allowed Syracuse to record eight sacks for a loss of 51 yards. • The Flames only recorded fi ve carries of fi ve or more yards against No. 22 Syracuse, with three of those allowing Frankie Hickson to lead Liberty’s limited rushing att ack with 11 carries for 29 yards. • The Flames turned the ball over four times in the game on two Stephen Calvert interceptions and a pair of lost fumbles (Calvert and Joshua Mack).

Defense• If Liberty was eligible for the national stat rankings in 2018 (was not due to FBS transition process), the Flames would have ranked No. 123 in the country (out of 139 teams) in total off ense (484.8 yards allowed per game) and No. 117 in scoring defense (36.8 points per game allowed).• Since beginning the FBS reclassifi cation process two years ago, the 368 total off ensive yards Liberty allowed to No. 22 Syracuse is the fewest the Flames have allowed to a Power 5 opponent (2017: Baylor – 532 yards; 2018: Virginia – 389 yards; Auburn – 531 yards). • The Flames recorded three turnovers against No. 22 Syra-cuse (2 INTs and 1 FF), keeping the nationally ranked visitors within reach of Liberty for most of the game. • The Flames allowed the Orange to keep drives alive, as Syra-cuse converted on 8-of-19 third-down plays and 2-of-4 fourth down plays.

Special Teams• Liberty returns all its key special teams players from the 2018 season, including the return of 2016 FCS Freshman All-America kicker Alex Probert.• K Probert missed the half of the 2018 season with an in-jury and worked his way back into the lineup for four out of the last six games, handling extra points and fi eld goals (4-of-5 FGs/19-of-20 XP). He missed his lone fi eld goal att empt against No. 22 Syracuse, a 43-yarder that sailed wide right during the fi rst quarter.• P Aidan Alves had a nice day against No. 22 Syracuse, fi nish-ing the game with eight punts for an average of 43.9 yards per punt (sixth career game averaging 40.0 yards per punt).

17-14Calvert's career record as a starting quarterback. He has started 31 straight games since taking over as the starter as a true freshman against Robert Morris on Oct. 1, 2016.

5 TDsCalvert threw for a career-high fi ve TDs twice in 2017, including Sept. 9 vs. Morehead State and Oct. 21 at Monmouth. It is just one off of the school single-game record and the most by a Flame since Biff Parson's fi ve TD passes against Wingate in 2000.

44 CompletionsCalvert completed a Liberty and Big South-record 44 passes during a season-opening victory at Baylor on Sept. 2, 2017. He shatt ered the previous Liberty mark of 34 completions, set twice by Josh Woodrum (2012 and 2015).

60 Att emptsCalvert's career-high 60 pass att empts at Baylor on Sept. 2, 2017 were another school record, eclipsing the previous standard of 57. Phil Basso was the most recent Flame to throw 57 passes, doing so against Central State in 1983.

447 Passing YardsCalvert's third program record at Baylor on Sept. 2, 2017 came courtesy of his 447 passing yards. He took down the Liberty mark of 441 yards set by Phil Basso against Carson-Newman in 1984.

12 300-Yard GamesCalvert has thrown for 300+ yards 12 times in his career, including three 400-yard outings. He passed for a Liberty freshman-record 350 yards during an Oct. 22, 2016 victory over Monmouth. He co-holds the Liberty record for most 300-yard games, along with Robby Justino.

FULFILLING THE MISSIONWhen Dr. Jerry Falwell founded then Lynchburg Baptist College in the fall of 1971, he painted a clear vision for its athletics department when he stated, “it is our plan to have our athletic program compa-rable to USC, to Notre Dame, to Alabama, to anyone in time.” Although the athletics department moved to the NCAA Division I level on Sept. 1, 1988, the “time” Dr. Falwell spoke about is now. The Flames football program played its fi rst season at the FBS level in 2018, taking the next step to fulfi ll its found-er’s visionary dream.
