- All-American running back A.J. Hines returns for his senior season with 3,849 career rushing yards and 38 career rushing touchdowns, pacing all active FCS players in both categories. Hines, the reigning NEC OffensivePlayeroftheYear,postedaschool-recordsix-straight 100-yard rushing performances last season.

- Head coach Jerry Schmitt returns for his 15th season at the helm of the DU program and 20th overall as a head coach. He has tallied 92 wins at Duquesne,justfivevictoriesawayfromtyingGregGattuso, the school’s all-time winningest coach.

-QuarterbackDaniel Parr is back under center for the Dukes after completing 188-of-311 pass attempts for 2,447 yards and 20 touchdowns as a junior in 2018. The FAU transfer also rushed for seven scores, a program record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.

- The Dukes will look to replace four starters on the offensiveline,includingapairofall-conferenceselectionsinMattFitzpatrickandAlexConley,whoeach started 35 consecutive games for Duquesne. Nick Jordan also graduated after starting all 13 games at right tackle last season while Colin Wittig started seven contests in 2018. Gabe Spurlock, who has 19 straight starts returns along with Lyle Petrosky who started six games last year. Tight ends Bill O’Malley and Jake Dixon return for DU, as well.

- Replicating the production of DU all-time leading receiver Nehari Crawford will be no small task, as the Florida native capped his second-straight 1,000-yard season as a senior in 2018. The Dukes return veterans Kellon Taylor and Kareem Coles Jr.whofinishedsecondandthird,respectively,inreceiving yards last season. Taylor and sophomore wideout Aidan Cain each tallied a pair of receiving touchdowns, as well.

- On the defensive side, the Dukes return a veteran core up front led by all-conference performer Kam Carter.The6-4,295-poundseniorfinishedwith22tackles (seven solo) including 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks last season. Defensive ends Mike O’Malley (32 tackles, 8.5 TFL) and Chris Favoroso (31 tackles, 4.0 TFL) are also back for the Dukes.

- The anchor of the DU defense is linebacker Brett Zanotto, who earned All-NEC honors as a junior after tallying a team-high 89 tackles (54 solo) with sixtacklesforloss.AftertransferringfromMarylandfollowing his freshman season where he led all first-yearplayerswith23tackles,hehasstartedall24 games in his two-year Duquesne career with 148 total tackles.

- Fellow linebacker Tom Jurkovec also returns after making four starts in 2018, recording 32 tackles (19 solo) for the Dukes.

SchmitthelpedtheDukestoahistoricfinishin2018,winningtheirfifthNECtitle,earningtheirsecondautomaticbidtotheFCSPlayoffsaswellasadvancingtothesecondroundofthepostseasonforthefirsttimeinprogramhistorywitha31-10roadvictory at No. 16 Towson. Under Schmitt’s guidance, Duquesne closed out the season rankedinboththeSTATSFCSTop25andAFCACoaches’Pollforthefirsttimeever.

In a season with a pair games against Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponents, SchmittledDuquesnetoninewinsforthesecondtimeinhiscareeronTheBluff.

TheNECCo-CoachoftheYear,hewasalsorecognizedasafinalistfortheSTATSFCS Eddie Robinson Award for FCS National Coach of the Year. For the second straightyear,aDuquesneplayerearnedNECOffensivePlayeroftheYearlaurels,asrunningbackA.J.HinesrankedinthetopfiveintheFCSinrushingyards.HineswasnamedanAll-AmericanbyfivedifferentorganizationsandafinalistfortheSTATSFCSWalterPaytonAwardforthetopoffensiveplayerattheFCSlevel,aswell.

In addition, Nehari Crawford graduated following the 2018 season as the program’s all-time leader in receiving yards and receptions before becoming the second player to accept an invitation to the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl at the Ro in Pasadena, Calif.

The Dukes put together a seven-game winning streak in 2017, their most wins in a row since the 2002 campaign. Duquesne landed a league-high 12 players on the All-NECteamsincludingFirstTeamhonoreeandOffensivePlayeroftheYearTommyStuart,whobecamethefirstDukesplayertogarnertheaward.StuartwasalsoafinalistfortheWalterPaytonAward.

BenHuss,afour-yearstarterandall-conferenceselectionontheoffensivelinewasnamed an All-American in 2017 by the Associated Press, STATS FCS and HERO Sportswhilealsobecoming thefirstplayer fromDuquesne toplay in theNFLPACollegiate Bowl.

In 2016, Duquesne, which tied for the NEC title, was one of just four FCS programs withplayersamongthefinalistsforthethreemajorFCSindividualawards.LinebackerChristianKuntzfinished12thinthevotingfortheBuckBuchananAward(topdefensiveplayer),quarterbackDillonBuechelwasafinalistfortheWalterPaytonAward(topoffensiveplayer)andfreshmanA.J.Hineswasnamedwinnerofthe Jerry Rice Award (top freshman).

Schmitt, who played an important role in the development of the Duquesne football program as an assistant from 1985-87 and again from 1992-99, returned to the DU campusin2005afterspendingfiveyearsasheadcoachathisalmamater,Westminster College, in New Wilmington, Pa. The Pittsburgh native oversaw the program’s move to the Northeast Conference and ensuing adoption of athletics-based aid in February of 2008.

It is a transition that has been an overwhelming success, as over the past eight seasons, Schmitt’s Dukes have won more overall games (59) and conference games (35)thananyNECschool.Inaddition,DU-whichhasatleastsharedfiveofthepasteight NEC titles - is the only league school with six winning conference records in the past eight years.

Schmitt wasted no time putting his mark on the program by leading the Dukes to three consecutiveMetroAtlanticAthleticConferenceFootballLeaguechampionshipsandearningMAACCoachoftheYeartwotimesinhisfirstthreeseasonsasheadcoach.

In 2011, Schmitt continued Duquesne’s transition as a scholarship-granting associate member of the Northeast Conference by guiding the Dukes to a 9-2 record and NEC co-Championship with a 7-1 record. The 2011 co-title was part of a gradual progressionfortheDukeswhofinishedthe2010seasonwitha7-4recordandthirdplaceleaguefinishwitha5-3mark.

In 2013, Duquesne once again earned a share of the title - this time tying with Sacred Heart.The2014seasonsawtheDukesfinish6-6overall.

In2015,Duquesnewent5-1inconferenceplay,earningitsfirstoutrightNECtitleandtheleague’sautomaticbidtotheFCSPlayoffs,Duquesne’sfirst.

Under Schmitt, the Dukes have recording 40 wins in NEC play over the past nine seasonsafterpostinga4-11markintheirfirsttwoyearswhileintegratingascholarship model.

InSchmitt’sfirstseason,theDukesposteda7-3record(4-0intheMAAC)-againstthe most challenging I-AA mid-major schedule a Duquesne team ever faced - and finishedwithaNo.3nationalrankinginTheSportsNetworkI-AAMid-MajorTop10.The2005DukesfinishedrankedNo.1nationallyinI-AAtotaldefense,rushingdefenseandpassefficiencydefense.

Inyeartwo,SchmittagainledDUtoa7-3record(3-1intheMAAC)andeighthconsecutiveMAACchampionshipastheDukesfinishedrankedsixthinTheSportsNetworkI-AAMid-MajorTop10.The2006Dukesrankedsecondnationallyinpass-ingoffenseand15thintotaloffense.

In2007,DuquesnewonashareofitsninthconsecutiveMAACtitleinpostinga6-4overallrecord.FiveyearsagotheDukes,intheirfirstseasonasascholarshipprogramsince the 1950s, went 3-7 in the school’s inaugural season in the NEC and followed that with a 3-8 record in 2009.

In2010,withDU’sfirstscholarshipclasscomprisingagoodportionofthesophomore and junior classes, the Dukes broke through with their third place NEC finish.

Winning titles at Duquesne is nothing new to Schmitt, who helped the Dukes to their firstthreeMAACchampionshipsin1995,1996&1999andtheschool’sfirstEasternCollege Athletic Conference (ECAC) Bowl game in 1996, during his 11 years as an assistant.

Schmitt,whoservedunderthreedifferentheadcoachesinTerryRussell(1985-87),DanMcCann(1992)andGregGattuso(1993-99),wastheoffensivecoordinatorforhis last seven seasons at DU, during which time the Dukes posted a 53-21 record, won threetitlesandsaw16differentoffensiveplayersnamedFirstTeamAll-MAAC.Hewas promoted to assistant head coach by Gattuso prior to the 1994 season. Schmitt acceptedtheheadcoachingpositionatWestminsterinMarchof2000.

While at Westminster, Schmitt posted a 28-21 record in overseeing the Titans’ transition from NCAA Division II to the Division III level. He led Westminster to an 8-2 mark including a 5-0 record against teams from the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) in 2000. After a rebuilding campaign in 2001, Westminster continuedtomakestridesunderSchmitt’sleadershipin2002,astheTitansfinished6-4overall(4-1inleagueplay)andplacedsecondintheirfirstseasonofeligibilityforthe PAC title. In 2003, Westminster overcame a challenging non-conference schedule againstscholarshipteamstocontendfortheconferencetitleinthefinalweekoftheseason.In2004,theTitansralliedfroman0-2starttopostwinsinfiveoftheirlasteight games.

Schmitt’soffensessetfivesingle-gamerecordsandproducedfouroftheseven1,000-yard rushers in school history. Forty-four of his players earned All-Conference honors in the three years his players were eligible for post-season recognition.

Prior tohisfirst stopatDuquesne,Schmittestablishedhimselfat thehighschoollevel in western Pennsylvania where he served as head coach at South Fayette High School (1990-91),offensiveanddefensive linecoachatBethelParkHighSchool(1989),offensiveanddefensive linecoachatAvonworthHighSchool (1988)andoffensiveanddefensivelinecoachandjuniorvarsityheadcoachatWestAlleghenyHigh School (1983-84).

In addition to his football coaching background, Schmitt served as head girls basketball coach at Beaver Area High School from 1987-99 and has also served as headtrack&fieldcoachatWestAlleghenyHighSchool(1984)andWeirton(W.Va.)MadonnaHighSchool(1983).PriortoreturningtoWestminster,Schmittworkedfulltime as a teacher in the Beaver Area school district from 1987-99.

A 1983 Westminster graduate, Schmitt was a three-year letterman and two-year starteron theoffensive lineunderheadcoachJoeFusco, leading theTitans toanundefeated regular season as a senior in 1981.

Schmitt, who graduated from Pittsburgh’s Keystone Oaks High School in 1978 and his wife, Paula, who earned her master’s degree at Duquesne, reside in Pittsburgh withtheirsonMatthewJake.
