Throughout the year we will continue to promote and encourage further leadership opportunities, enabling students to grow and strive for their personal best. They outlined the value of a strong P&C, some planned activities for the 2019 year and encouraged families to join the team in contributing to an engaging and effective learning environment. We also welcome a new member to the Harcourt team. Miss Christine Kanaan has been appointed to Harcourt as a permanent teacher and will begin her journey with us teaching 5/6W. She has already spent time getting to know the school, its routines and direction and is looking forward to engaging in the wonderful learning opportunities planned this year. 01 Term 1 2019

Our Vision:

Our learning community at Harcourt Public School is committed to fostering personal excellence. Together we inspire curious, adaptable learners who actively engage in a complex and dynamic world. We value integrity, inclusivity and mutual respect.

The last five weeks have seen opportunities for community to learn more about what is happening at school and interact with teachers and other community members. Our meet the teacher and meet the executive morning was well attended as well as the P&C welcome morning tea. P&C representatives presented a greatly appreciated $3000 donation towards the current air conditioning project underway. They outlined the value of a strong P&C, some planned activities for the 2019 year and encouraged families to join the team in contributing to an engaging and effective learning environment.

We also welcome a new member to the Harcourt team. Miss Christine Kanaan has been appointed to Harcourt as a permanent teacher and will begin her journey with us teaching 5/6W. Kindergarten Issue 01 – Term 1, 2019

Kindergarten 2019

Kindergarten students have had a wonderful start to their primary school journey. Here are some things your Kindergarten child will be learning about in Term One:

English: Learning sounds and sight words, learning correct letter formations, small group reading and

writing activities.

Mathematics: Whole number, addition & subtraction, patterns & algebra, 2D shapes, length and positional language.

Geography: Students participate in discussing why places are special and how people care for them.

Students also locate familiar and local places on maps.

Science and Technology: Students will learn about the different places and spaces within our universe and on planet Earth. Students will investigate the material properties of common objects.

Creative Arts: Introduction to visual arts, music, dance and drama.

Sport: Students will participate in a range of physical activities designed to improve their fundamental motor skills and allow them to explore the different ways they control and move their bodies.

Personal Development and Health: Students discuss how to express their feelings, needs and wants in an appropriate way. They also explore how to relate well to others in work and play situations.

Stage 1 - Years 1 & 2 Issue 01 – Term 1, 2019

Welcome to Stage One Our Stage One teaching team have enjoyed getting to know each of our Year One and

Year Two students this term to begin our learning journey for 2019.

We are looking forward to meeting with you in our Parent Teacher meetings at the end of this term. If you would like to meet with us prior, please let us know and we will arrange a time that suits. We encourage these discussions at the end of the school day as we are responsible for our class in the morning and are busy preparing them for their learning.

Our learning journey this term includes:

English - Students are learning about imaginative texts through the theme of fairy tales. They are developing their reading strategies to improve their fluency, accuracy & comprehension. Students are learning how to write a simple imaginative text.

Mathematics – Students are learning their numbers and number patterns with strategies to add and subtract. They are learning about volume and capacity, time and two dimensional shapes. Students are learning about chance and the likelihood of something occurring.

Geography – Students will become familiar with the geographical features of some of Australia’s iconic landscapes through our unit titled ‘Features of Places’.

Science & Technology – Students will investigate the sources of light and sound, how they are produced and the role it plays in our lives.

Creative Arts – Students are practicing drama through mime, role playing and movement. Sport – Every Wednesday students will participate in activities that develop their kicking,

throwing, catching, vertical jump, dodging, skipping and striking skills. Personal Development and Health – Students will learn the skills to socially interact and get

along with others. They will also learn about sun safety through our sun smart program.

Stage 2 - Years 3 & 4 Issue 01 – Term 1, 2019

Welcome to Stage Two Welcome back to school for 2019. The Stage Two team hope everyone enjoyed their holidays and we are looking forward to showcasing different events and learning opportunities our students are participating in as the year goes on.

English – This term, students will be focusing on texts that entertain and persuade. They will be learning about various texts structures, language features and devices which help support their writing.

Mathematics - Stage Two will be focusing on whole number skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; time; problem solving skills and strategies.

Geography- Students will develop an understanding of place by examining similarities and differences between places within and outside Australia.

Science & Technology - Students investigate how food and fibre is produced in modern and traditional societies. They examine how food and fibre is obtained, they explore technologies and processes used to assist in their production and the contributions they make to society.

Creative Arts – Stage Two are studying various artists and artwork associated with the Pop Art genre. They explore different techniques and colours used to create meaning and interest. Personal Development and Health – Throughout the semester, students will be participating in fitness activities focusing on Athletic skills. They will also be taking part in lessons for Health regarding Safe living.

Stage 3 - Years 5 & 6 Issue 01 – Term 1, 2019

Stage Three It has been an exciting four weeks all year 5 and 6 students. All classes have settled in well with the teachers and students getting to know each other.

Meet the teachers

Our Stage Three team includes Ms. Kelly, Ms. Psomas, Mr Bowman, Ms. Nicos and our newest member, Ms. Kanaan. Ms. Kanaan will be teaching 5/6W for the remainder of 2019.

Mathematics

Over the last four weeks, students have been learning about place value of large numbers, exploring different number patterns and developing their ability to add and subtract problems using a number of different strategies. For the rest of the term students will be exploring multiplication and division, as well as developing their knowledge of fractions.

English

Students are focusing on texts that entertain their audience, such as narratives. They are learning to plan their writing and use sophisticated vocabulary to create interesting texts. In class, students are reading a number of different texts and developing their comprehension skills to gain a greater understanding.

EAL/D Teachers Issue 01 – Term 1, 2019

Meet the EAL/D Team

Kindergarten classes and Year One

I'm Ms. Speirs and I will be supporting classes in writing and oracy, in small groups in class and in a parallel writing group.

I am looking forward to working with the students and classroom teachers to develop the English skills of all.

New Arrival Students.

Our names are Ms. Fong and Mr. Freeman. This year we will be supporting newly arrived students, from

across the whole school, who need help with English so that they can better understand language used in their

classrooms.

Year Two and Year Three

I'm Mrs Tsiakoulas and my role is to support EAL/D students. This year I'll be working with Stage One (Year 2) and Stage Two (Year 3). Students will be

supported in writing and speaking and listening in Term.

I'm Ms. Cacciotti and this year I will be working with Stage Two and Stage Three. I will be supporting students in speaking and listening and writing.

Community Languages Issue 01 – Term 1, 2019

2019 Chinese CLOTE Program Overview

The Chinese CLOTE programme will focus on using authentic language indicated in NSW Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum and delivered through topic-based programme. The following is the scope and sequence for each stage. Early Stage One By the end of Early Stage One students interact in Chinese with their peers and teacher through action-related talk and play-based activities. Stage One By the end of Stage One, students interact in Chinese with their peers and teacher to exchange greetings and simple information. Stage Two By the end of Stage Two, students interact with others in Chinese to share information and participate in guided classroom activities that involve following instruction and collaborating with peers. Stage Three By the end of Stage Three, students interact with others in Chinese to exchange information and opinions. They engage in classroom activities and collaborate with peers to plan a group activity or share event.

Community Languages Issue 01 – Term 1, 2019

2019 Korean CLOTE Program Overview The Korean program for 2019 will focus on authentic Korean as indicated in the new Korean Syllabus. It will be delivered through interesting and relevant topics to the students’ everyday life. The Korean program is designed to provide the students with educational opportunity to learn linguistic and cultural understanding of the Korean language and Korea. Students will be experiencing diverse and interesting activities for each topic for the improvement of their literacy skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The students’ progress will be closely monitored and recorded through various formative and summative assessments. Early Stage One By the end of Early Stage One students identify key words and specific information in simple spoken and visual texts and share information. Students compose simple spoken and visual texts. They also describe aspects of self and their family background, and their own prior learning and/or experience of Korean. Term 1 - School life + Korean consonant Term 2 - My family + Korean vowels Term 3- All about me + Body parts Term 4 - Familiar places + Colours Stage One By the end of Stage One students locate and organise key points of information from simple spoken, written, digital and visual texts by using modelled sentence structures in Korean. They compose simple texts, using modelled language and illustrations to support meaning. Term 1 - Likes & Dislikes Term 2 - Wet and dry environments + Hobbies Term 3 - Healthy & unhealthy food Term 4 - Seasons + Telling the time

Stage Two By the end of Stage Two students interact with others in Korean to share information, experiences and feelings, and participate in tasks and activities that involve collaborative planning and simple transactions. Students locate and organise information from spoken, written, digital and visual texts, and respond to texts using the modelled language in Korean, in spoken, written and digital modes. They compose texts using formulaic expressions, modelled language and visual supports. Term 1 - People’s beliefs Term 2 - Korean housing & celebrations Term 3 - Weather & Writing a letter Term 4 - My community Stage Three By the end of Stage Three students initiate interactions in Korean with others to exchange information, ideas and opinions, and collaborate with peers to make choices and arrangements, organise events and complete transactions. They compose informative and imaginative texts for a variety of purposes and audiences. Harcourt Expectations Issue 01 – Term 1, 2019

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) At Harcourt PS, over the past two years, we have taken our first steps in implementing PBL. PBL is an approach to student wellbeing and behaviour, across the whole school, that aims to foster a safe and positive learning environment with the purpose of enabling student learning and wellbeing.

Our community, school staff and students decided on four expectations for all areas of the school.

In the classroom, our students have been learning what our rules and expectations look like.

For the rest of term one, Harcourt students are learning the following:

At home, Mum’s, dad’s and carers, use the language of PBL at home to remind our children what we all expect!
