SUMMER West Richmond Church of the Brethren
Christian Ed Activities this Summer
Sunday School
While some churches discontinue Sunday school during the summer months, West Richmond will offer the full range of classes for both adults and children through July and August. Faye Urban is teaching a multi-age class for children. However, due to vacation schedules of teacher and student, the class will not meet on July 7, 21, and 28, or on August 4 and 11. Kevin Beers continues to use the video series on the History of Christian Theology in the upstairs adult class. David Brunk will facilitate the downstairs Questers adult class. The Questers will be using the book, Spiritual Literacy.
Children’s Church
Children’s Church will continue to meet on the first & third Sundays of the month in July and August. The children appreciate their new space in the White Building. They enjoy their time together and are growing closer through learning and sharing with each other.
Camp Bethel
Parents, remember, that scholarships for a week of summer camp at Camp Bethel are available. We will reimburse one half of the cost of the $350 registration fee for a simple week of camp with no add-ons. Special camps – Adventure, Rafting, Equestrian, Skills, etc., -- are not eligible for the scholarship. The Camp Bethel schedule and registration forms can be found online at www.campbethelvirginia.org. If you have questions, please contact Carol Goss or Sandra Lynch, our Camp Bethel representative.

“Connect your congregation for Annual Conference Sunday 2019!” says an invitation to the Annual Conference Sunday morning webcast on July 7. “Each year, we form one large worshiping congregation on Annual Conference Sunday, as many congregations and individuals tune into the webcast on Sunday morning.... By streaming the service from Annual Conference for the worship in your church, your congregation can worship along with thousands of other Brethren!” Differing time zones and worship start times are not an obstacle to a congregation joining in the live stream worship because the webcast can be rewound and paused and started as needed. Plan for worship start times after 8:30 a.m. (Eastern). Link to the Annual Conference daily webcasts of worship and business sessions and find more information about the special Sunday morning service at www.brethren.org/ac/2019/webcasts/#acsunday.
What you see to the right is a word cloud. According to Collins English Dictionary, a word cloud is a visual representation of the words used in a particular piece of text, with the size of each word indicating its relative frequency. As it reads in the brief description underneath, the words here are the top 1000 words in response to District Conversation questions on the denomination-wide Compelling Vision. You will notice that the most frequently used word is service. Next in size and boldness appears to be peace. Following in sequence, there seems to be several, community, others, feast, and then Christ, with Jesus, maybe being ever so slightly smaller.
My initial gut-level reaction to this exercise is that the Church of the Brethren considers service more important than Jesus Christ! I had to call my friend, colleague, and brother-in-Christ, Kevin Daggett, who helped lead these discussions throughout the Virlina and Shenandoah Districts to help me understand. Kevin stated many people’s reactions were similar to mine. However, Kevin clarified that the Compelling Vision questions assumed the responses were coming from a Christocentric perspective already. The words had more to do with how Brethren identified their faithful response AS followers of Christ. That helps! With this in mind, based on the words above, what insights can you glean into who we are as Brethren? This first week in July, our Annual Conference will take place in Greensboro, NC. Bob Gangwer, Zherina and myself will be there as your representatives to discover the conclusions to this yearlong process called the Compelling Vision. Stay tuned.

What Do You Tell Yourself Every Morning as You Start the Day? July: Jabez would say, "Oh, that you may bless me and enlarge my territory."
August: Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego would say, "We will not bow down to any image but will serve the Lord."
Each month we will include a new statement of faith here. Meditate on it! Speak it every morning.

Did you know that t-shirts can be made into diaper covers that go to Haiti through
Midwives for Haiti?
The Witness Commission noticed an article online in May through MESSENGER that had pictures and patterns and a link to a how-to video. They approached the Tuesday morning Ladies Circle with the information and now there’s a production line going! Some are cutting, some sewing, some ironing. Can you use scissors or a sewing machine? Do you have Tuesday mornings available? Do you want to know more? Talk with Judy McCloud (she did our first sample) or her helpers, Betty Altic and Sandi Davis. Or check out the article at http://www.brethren.org/messenger/articles/living-simply/t-shirts-into-diapers.html
