WELCOME TO THE GREATER SPRINGFIELD REGIONSpringfield, the fourth largest city in New England, offers a booming economy with more affordablepricing and rural feel than its big city neighbors that makes it a perfect destination for businessesor individuals. With a long history in manufacturing and growing education and health careindustries, the city’s economy is strong. A variety of attractions and entertainment options keeplocals happy and attract many visitors who contribute to a thriving tourism industry. A primelocation, educated workforce and low operating costs make greater Springfield ideal for anybusiness.

In total, more than 15,500 businesses have chosen to call greater Springfield home. Thesebusinesses, which employ more than 191,000 workers, span a variety of industries includingmanufacturing, healthcare, financial services, retail and more. Manufacturing is one of the largestindustries in the area and supplies products for a diverse range of specialties including aerospace,defense, medical devices, energy, industrial, consumer products and more. Firearmsmanufacturing remains a key part of the Springfield economy. Baystate Health, a nationallyrecognized teaching hospital, is Springfield’s largest employer and a main contributor to the robusthealth care industry. The financial services industry continues to boom in the city of Springfield,with many major banks and insurance companies locating here, including the Fortune 500 companyMassMutual Financial Group.

The area’s location inside the Knowledge Corridor, among the highest concentrations of collegesand universities in the country ensures an educated workforce to support the region’s businesses.With nearly 30 world-renowned higher educational institutions and over 100,000 students, theworkforce is plentiful to fill a multitude of jobs. Some of the country’s most innovative ideas comefrom the cutting-edge research and development within these region’s institutions. Employment inthe education sector itself is also high in the region with Springfield alone having three four-yearcolleges and other technical schools employing about 2,000 people.

Springfield and its surrounding communities are affordable sites for both businesses andemployees to locate. The cost of living in western Massachusetts is nearly 50 percent less thannearby major metropolitan centers like Boston or New York. Real estate costs are low for bothsingle-family homes – just below the national average - and for industrial and business sites. Manyof the municipalities provide pre-permitting sites and offer tax incentives for locating here, andsignificant investments in local infrastructure and broadband expansion, provide for a business-friendly environment. Since housing and the cost of living are lower in the region than other cities,this adds to the total cost savings for any business looking to locate or expand here.

TOURISMA diverse variety of recreational and cultural options in and around greater Springfield keep andattract its workforce and have helped build a tourism industry that contributes approximately $750million annually to the greater Springfield region. With museums, historical sites, sporting facilitiesand venues for music and theater, combined with many dining, shopping and lodging options in andaround the region, there is no lack of alternatives to attract visitors and entertain residents.

SHOPPING & DININGSpringfield also has a variety of shopping and dining options, enhanced by the 2018 opening of MGMSpringfield, a casino resort with a lively retail, dining and entertainment environment, which includesa hotel, movie theater, bowling alley, and outdoor skating rink, MGM is also committed to partneringwith the region’s entertainment venues to bring world-class entertainment to Springfield - it managesthe Mass Mutual Center, a venue for conventions, sporting events, concerts, and the SpringfieldThunderbirds hockey team.

Within a 10-minute drive, visitors can find malls, eclectic boutiques featuring local and internationaldesigners, restaurants specializing in family-friendly and ethnic cuisines, and artisan shops andgalleries.

ARTS AND RECREATIONThe numerous recreational and cultural options in greater Springfield are a driver for the region’seconomy. About 7.6 percent of the workforce is employed in the arts, entertainment and recreationand another 11.5 percent are employed at the area’s retail shops. These entertainment options notonly attract and retain a workforce, but also build a tourism industry that is critical to region’seconomy engine.

The tourism industry is strong in Springfield, with an abundance of historical sites, museums, sportingattractions and a major convention center. The industry accounts for a large amount of spending andemployment in the region. About $750 million is spent annually in the greater Springfield region fromvisiting tourists and the statewide tourism revenue is over $20 billion.

In addition, as a center for industry, Springfield has become a cultural and entertainment hub. Forcultural offerings, Springfield has five world-class museums affiliated with the Smithsonian Institutelocated in the heart of its downtown. The museums include the Michele & Donald D’Amour Museum ofFine Arts, the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum, the Springfield Science Museum, theConnecticut Valley Historical Museum and the Museum of Springfield History, the Lyman and MerrieWood Museum of Springfield History, as well as the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum and the Dr.Seuss National Memorial and Sculpture Park, a unique attraction that brings in visitors every year tosee full-scale sculptures in the birthplace of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. The collegesand universities in the area also offer their own art museums, which are open to the public and add tothe cultural offerings of the region.

The Springfield Cultural District is a growing initiative to bring arts and culture to downtownSpringfield. Its mission is to bring more vitality to the city by highlighting its outstanding culturalofferings as well as making arts and culture more accessible while creating connections betweenartists and visitors. The Cultural District offers a walking tour of the areas it encompasses.

The birthplace of basketball, Springfield is a major tourist attraction for sports enthusiasts and ishome to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The landmark structure, located along thebanks of the Connecticut River, houses 40,000-square-feet of basketball history and recognizes morethan 300 inductees from the sport. Many of its exhibits are interactive – entertaining sports fans of allages and interest levels.

The Eastern States Exposition lies just across the river and is the site of one of the top 6 fairs in NorthAmerica, attracting 1.5 million people annually and contributing $479 million to the local economy.

Historic and family-friendly attractions round out the tourist appeal ofthe region and the city of Springfield. The Springfield Armory is a well-known national historic site and served as America’s first armoryestablished by George Washington. The site now serves as a museumhousing one of the largest collections of firearms in the world. Familyattractions include Forest Park, one of the largest urban parks in thecountry, which also is home to the park’s zoo, nearby Six Flags NewEngland amusement park, more than 2,400 acres of parkland, tenniscourts walking trails.

ENTERTAINMENTThere are a number of live performance venues in the city’s downtown,which attract headline performers, as well as theater performances,sporting events and renowned music performances. Symphony Hallhosts concerts as well as Broadway and off-Broadway productions, andis home to the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, the largest symphonyoutside of Boston performing classical, pops, family, educational andchamber music. The Springfield Jazz and Roots Festival, now in itsfourth year, takes place at Court Square in August. The MassMutualCenter is a big economic driver for the city, offering a location forconventions, local sporting events and concerts. MassMutual Centerhas 100,000 square feet of space that includes a ballroom, five meetingrooms, 40,000 square feet of exhibit space and an 8,000-seat arena. Thearena is home to the Springfield Thunderbirds hockey team.

INNOVATIONSpringfield’s Innovation District is a vibrant center for entrepreneurship,culture and dining. The Innovation Center is home to Valley VentureMentors, a regional entrepreneurial accelerator. The center has plansfor a café and other tenants.


ECONOMYBUSINESS & INDUSTRY


ECONOMIC DIVERSITYSpringfield’s economy is a diverse mix of manufacturing, financialservices, health care, and education industries. Located within theKnowledge Corridor and at the Crossroads of New England, businessesin the area find an extremely educated workforce and superbtransportation infrastructure giving access in every direction. Recentinfrastructure improvements with more on the horizon and lower costsof doing business are just some of the attractive features for newbusinesses to locate here.

The Knowledge Corridor, a partnership established between Springfieldand Hartford, Connecticut and the surrounding region, provides thearea with a workforce educated in the area’s 30 colleges. The two citiesand the area’s businesses and educational facilities have collaboratedto promote the region’s economic progress by working in a partnershipthat provides a variety of resources to the new companies locating inthe region. Greater Springfield’s location is ideal because of the varietyof access points to the rest of New England and beyond. The city haseasy access to major routes including Interstate 91, running north andsouth, and the Massachusetts Turnpike, running east and west. Theseroutes connect Springfield to other major cities including Boston, New

York City and Albany. There are also abundant rail, bus and freightservices, augmented by Springfield’s newly-renovated Union Station,which offers the New Haven, Hartford, Springfield rail program.

Greater Springfield has kept the cost of doing business low and keptthe process easy in order to attract new companies. Manymunicipalities offer affordable real estate costs, pre-permitted sitesand other business incentives. The cost of living for the area’sworkforce is also lower in Springfield, about 50 percent less than itsneighboring metropolitan cities, which keeps regional wages lower thanother major metropolitan cities. Investments in infrastructure benefitbusinesses that locate in and around the city of Springfield. Springfieldand the surrounding area have undergone one of largest broadbandexpansions ever undertaken. All of these benefits make westernMassachusetts perfect for companies looking to relocate or expand.

Springfield’s long-established manufacturing industry continues togrow and to diversify, with more than 800 manufacturing companiesusing state-of-the-art technology and processes to produce a variety ofplastic, metal and advanced materials. The products created in theregion’s various companies supply the aerospace, defense, medical

device, energy, industrial, consumer product and other industries. Intotal, the area’s manufacturing industry employs 11 percent of thearea’s workforce and helps supply other area trades. Majormanufacturing employers in the area include Solutia, Inc., a globalmanufacturer of performance materials employing over 400 people.

Firearms manufacturing has a long history in Springfield, dating backto 1777 when George Washington selected the city as the nation’s firstarsenal. The companies located within the region offer the completesupply chain for firearms manufacturers, with companies creatingabrasives, cutting tools and fluids and shops providing specialtyservices like creating forgings and castings. Springfield is home toSmith & Wesson, the nation’s largest manufacturer of handguns,employing more than 1,700 people at its world headquarters.

Many of the area’s manufacturing companies specialize in theaerospace and defense industries. The Springfield area is known as ahigh technology precision manufacturing hot spot. The companiessupply mechanical components and sub-assembly to other majorcommercial manufacturers, including aircraft engine builders andmilitary equipment contractors, that help keep the country’s military

supplied. Companies located here including Millitech, Inc., Aimtek, Inc.,B&E Precisions Aircraft Components and more. Most recently,Chinese-owned CRRC USA Rail Corp., a subsidiary of the world’s largestmanufacturer of railroad cars and locomotives, started manufacturingat its $95 million Springfield-based national headquarters.

The education and health services industry employs the largestpercentage of the Springfield-area workforce at nearly 30 percent. Thehealth care industry is a major employer and economic driver inSpringfield. Baystate Health, which operates the major hospital in theregion, is also the largest employer in the area with 12,000 employees,and delivers more than $2.6 billion in yearly economic impact. MercyMedical Center, a member of Trinity Health Of New England, employsanother 3,100 people. The Center for Human Development, also inSpringfield, employs more than 1,400 people. The area’s manyeducational institutions not only educate the workforce, but alsoemploy a good portion of them. University of Massachusetts at Amherstis by far the area’s largest educational employer with 8,200 peopleworking there. In the city itself, Springfield College employs another675, Springfield Technical Community College another 880 and WesternNew England University has another 860 employees.

ECONOMY

Medical device manufacturing is also a growing industry in thehealthcare-focused region. There are now more than 300 medicalmanufacturing companies, who are supported with the area’snationally recognized research hospitals and other companiesfocused on high-precision technologies. The area’s many schoolsare also offering numerous programs to train an educatedworkforce in the medical device industry, including UMass Amherstand Western New England University with programs in engineering,biotechnology and more.

The financial services industry has seen a boom in the city ofSpringfield. Multi-national banks and many major insurancecompanies have located in and around the city. The Fortune 500company MassMutual Financial Group, an insurance and assetmanagement company, has long been located in Springfield and isamong the area’s largest employers with over 6,700 workers. TDBank is another major player in the financial services sector tosettle in Springfield. This company, one of the country’s largestcommercial banking organizations, employs over 600 people inSpringfield. Liberty Mutual Group, the nation’s sixth largestpersonal and car insurance company, is a newer addition to theSpringfield landscape and employs 350 people. Many other majorbanks and alternative financing companies round out the variety offinancial services offered in the region.

EDUCATIONACCESSIBLE EDUCATION

HIGHER LEARNINGSpringfield is one of the partner cities in the region known as the Knowledge Corridor. The Corridor, formed inthe early 2000s, is a business partnership between Springfield and Hartford, Connecticut, and thesurrounding communities. The two large cities, located with 26 miles of each other, have joined forces witharea businesses and educational facilities to promote the entire region’s economic progress. As a part of thecorridor, Springfield has access to a collaborative community of businesses, including several Fortune 500companies, and leaders working together to promote development. With 30 colleges and universities, theKnowledge Corridor has one of the highest concentrations of higher education institutions in the country.There are upwards of 160,000 students attending the schools in the region. Nearly 29 percent of the area’spopulation has a bachelor’s degree or higher –above the national average. The Knowledge Corridor lives up toits name and provides a highly educated workforce to any business wanting to locate here.

The largest school in the region is University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The flagship of the statewideuniversity system, UMass Amherst has more than 28,000 undergraduate and graduate students on its 1,450-acre campus and has over 1,100 faculty members and a total employment of 7,900. The state school is amongthe top public research universities in the country with researching activities totaling more than $195 millionannually through nearly 80 specialized research centers and institutions. Within the city limits, Springfieldoffers many private colleges and universities, including the American International College, SpringfieldCollege and Western New England University, and other well-known state and private colleges anduniversities surround the city, including Elms College, Smith College, Hampshire College, Mount HolyokeCollege, Amherst College, Bay Path University and Westfield State University. With this concentration ofquality educational institutions, there’s no shortage of educated graduates to fill positions in the growingSpringfield economy. Many of these schools are also the area’s major employers, with Westfield Stateemploying more than 600, Smith College at more than 1,000, Mount Holyoke and Springfield College eachemploying more than 600 and Western New England University employing another 860.

Private preparatory schools The MacDuffie School, Wilbraham-Monson Academy, Suffield Academy and TheWilliston Northampton School all attract students from around the globe.

The public school system and technical schools also support the many manufacturing companies located inSpringfield and the region. Many of the area public schools, including Springfield, offer a Machine ToolTechnology program for high school students to help them learn the skills required to operate importantequipment, interpret engineering drawings, and perform inspections. Springfield Technical CommunityColleges and Asnuntuck Community College offer manufacturing technology and mechanical engineeringtechnology programs that prepare students for positions at the area’s abundant manufacturing facilities.

The not-for-profit BaystateHealth, located in Springfield, has a diverse workforce of over 12,000 employees as part ofits integrated health care system serving over 800,000 people throughout western NewEngland. Other hospitals in the city include Mercy Medical Center, part of TrinityHealth of New England and Shriners Hospitals for Children. Trinity Healthof New England employs 3,100 people locally and offers a variety ofservices at Mercy Medical Center, including housing surgical, oncology,hearing, radiology and maternity centers, and is consistently recognizedfor its high quality stroke care. Shriners Hospital, a member of the MayoClinic Care Network, offers pediatric services including pediatricorthopedic, rheumatology and cleft lip and palate care using the latestinnovations in diagnosis and treatment for ages birth through age 18.

The Springfield region is the home to a growing number of medicaldevice companies as much of the manufacturing industry shifts itsfocus to the medical field. Area medical device manufacturingcompanies have a large market for their products with all of theactivities at Baystate and other nearby medical centers. There aremanufacturing companies that design medical products, including A-TSurgical Manufacturing making orthopedic supports, Texcel creatingimplantable devices and Marox Medical making orthopedic implants.Other area manufacturing companies provide goods for hospitals, likeCovidien, which supplies a range of needles and syringes; InstrumentTechnology Inc., which specializes in creating a variety of scopes;Super Brush, which makes swabs and brushes, and NationalNonwovens, which provides a multitude of textiles. Still others, likeApex Resource Technologies, Accelent/ Medsource, and MicroTestLaboratories provide medical design and testing services. This variety

of companies creates a collaborative environment to produce finishedproducts for the region and for export.

QUALITY CAREThe healthcare industry is dominant in Springfield. The city boasts aquality care and active research hospital, numerous medical devicemanufacturing companies and a number of health insurancecompanies. About 30 percent of the Springfield-area population work inhealth care and educational services, while another 11.6 percent workat the area’s many manufacturing companies, including the over 300companies in the area creating medical products. The local medicalservice options also keep the area’s workforce in good health.

FROM THE PRESIDENTThank you for picking up one of the mostvaluable tools in the region – the SpringfieldRegional Chamber’s 2019 Business Directoryand Community Guide! This Directory is filledwith valuable information about the region, itsresources and the more than 500 businessesof all sizes and industries that invest in thecommunity by investing in the Chamber.

In the past year, we have seen growth - inmembership which broadens the businessnetwork, in event attendance which increasesmarketing exposure, and the businesscommunity as a whole, with growth andexpansion across the region. We debuted newevents in response to member suggestions.We launched RiseUp Springfield to aid oursmall business community in reaching theirpotential. We served as a founding member ofthe Western Mass. Businesses Against HumanTrafficking coalition, taking a stand to protectthe safety of all, and we ramped up ourresources so that our members couldcapitalize on the goods and services beingpurchased by MGM. We continue to work hardto advocate on legislative issues that affectour members, and we are proud of ourconsistent and long-standing record of beingthe only Chamber in the region to offer thislevel of legislative advocacy.

One of the most significant initiatives weundertook last year was to develop a StrategicPlan, which identified our strengths andchallenges and which will serve as a blueprintto leverage our strengths, overcome ourchallenges, and capitalize on theopportunities ahead of us. The Strategic Planis a three-year initiative to promote ourstrengths, expand our existing businesses andemerging opportunities, and significantlyimprove the economic future for all who callthe Springfield Region home.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL OFWESTERN MASSACHUSETTS Founded in 1996, the Economic Development Council of WesternMassachusetts (EDC) successfully brings together the region’s privateand public leadership to create a positive environment for streamlinedeconomic growth. CEOs, college presidents and Mayors work togetherin a unique collaboration that is efficient and effective. By bringing theentire region together behind the common goal of economicdevelopment - jobs, investment and tourism visits have increased. TheEDC’s active marketing program promotes the region externally toattract businesses and promotes the region internally for the purposeof retaining businesses. The EDC’s Workforce, Government Affairs andInfrastructure Committees assure vital legislative issues areaddressed, the region’s public and private funding needs are met, andthat transportation and telecommunication highways support agrowing, competitive regional economy. MASSHIRE – HAMPDEN COUNTYWORKFORCE BOARDMassHire – Hampden County Workforce Board is a business-led, non-profit corporation established by state and federal legislation.MassHire is the region’s primary policy-making authority in developingand improving workforce and career skills, working in partnership withgovernment, business, labor, education and community-basedorganizations. MassHire coordinates funds and oversees all of theregion’s publicly-funded worker training and employee placementprograms and serves as a clearinghouse for labor market informationand hiring incentives. � Budget/Tax Policy: Budget/Tax Policy: advocating for rebuilding ofthe state's Stabilization Fund, adequate funding for local aid with anemphasis on targeted investments to meet the Skills Gap; andopposing any increase in income tax or added surtax on business

� Energy: encouraging innovative ways to moderate these costs

� Transportation: supporting investment and reforms and ensuringour infrastructure meets the needs of our region
