GETTING THE “W”Michigan State captured its first win of the season at DeMartin Stadium. This year, the Spartans are now 1-5-3 at home with two losses to ranked teams in No. 13 Washington and No. 20 Notre Dame.

CLOSE CALLSMichigan State has already played five over-time games in its first 14 outings. Last season, the Spartans played four overtime games all season, going 0-0-4 in those games. This year, MSU is 1-1-3 in extra time. Five of the Spar-tans’ six of defeats have been by one goal. The Spartans have lost four games 1-0, including two to ranked teams in No. 13 Washington and No. 20 Notre Dame.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATSThe Spartans travel to Evanston to take on the Wildcats of Northwestern. The Wildcats are coming off a big 2-0 win over Rutgers after a four-game losing streak. The squad has an overall record of 6-7-1 and a conference re-cord of 2-3-1. In their win over Rutgers, goals came from sophomore forward Jose Del Valle in the 10th minute and freshman midfielder Logan Weaver scored his first goal of his career in the 42nd minute.

The team is led by senior midfielder Matt Moderwell (3g, 5a) and sophomore midfielder Bardia Kimiavi (3g, 2a). The pair have scored six of the teams 12 total goals this season. Junior goalkeeper Miha Miskovic has been a true threat in goal for the wildcats. He has 41 total saves this season.

Head Coach Tim Lenahan is in his 18th season as head Coach of the Wildcats. He has brought the team to nine NCAA tournament appear-ances and a school-record 16 wins in 2008.

LOOKING AT THE SERIESMichigan State leads the series 32-7-5. The most recent matchup was last season when the game ended in a 0-0 tie even after two overtimes. However, in 2017 and 2016, the Spartans were able to defeat the Wildcats 2-0 on both occasions. From 1981 to 2004, the Spartans only lost three times to the Wildcats.

AROUND THE BIG TENRedshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Hunter Morse is among the leaders in several catego-ries in the Big Ten. He is first in the saves with 66, just ahead of Wisconsin’s Dean Cowdroy, who has 49 saves. Morse is also fourth in the league in goals against average (1.17). Morse also is second in save percentage (.795).

Sophomore forward Farai Mutatu is first in the conference in shots with 42, averaging 3.23 spg. Junior midfielder Michael Miller is tied

CoachesHead Coach - Damon Rensing (Michigan State ‘96, 11th season)Assistant Coach - Joe AhearnAssistant Coach - T.J.KolbaVolunteer Coach - Micah Collins

Former MSU soccer standout Damon Rensing became the fifth head coach in Spartan history on January 1, 2009 after taking over for the legendary Joe Baum, who guided MSU for 32 seasons.

In 2019, Rensing begins his 11th season as head coach, after serving as an assistant coach for 10 seasons at his alma mater. In nine years, Rensing has compiled an impressive 117-66-30 record (.623).

Rensing was named MSU’s head coach designate on Aug. 14, 2008 after Baum decided to make 2008 his final season as head coach. Rensing has spent nearly half his life in the Green and White with four years as varsity letterwinner, one season as an assistant with the women’s program and 10 seasons in his previous position. In his first 10 years as head coach, the Spartans have made eight NCAA tourna-ment campaigns, including a run to the Spartans’ first College Cup in 50 years in 2018.

The 2018 season was historic as MSU recorded a 14-5-4 overall re-cord en route to its first College Cup appearance under Rensing. Mid-fielder Giuseppe Barone captured first-team All-American honors as well as being named Big Ten Midfielder of the Year. Michigan State had another first when three Spartans were drafted on the first day of the MLS SuperDraft with DeJuan Jones and Ryan Sierakowski going in the first round and Jimmy Hague being drafted in the second.

The Spartan reached the Elite Eight in 2017 with a 13-3-4 overall re-cord and a stellar 5-0-3 record in Big Ten action. Michigan State con-tinued its dominating play at home with a 7-1-2 record at DeMartin. MSU used home NCAA Tournament wins against Virginia Tech and Western Michigan to reach the Elite Eight. MSU was stopped in pen-alty kicks by Big Ten foe Indiana.

In 2016, the Spartans returned to the NCAA Tournament, hosting the first round in East Lansing. MSU ended the season with a 13-5-2 record, including going undefeated at DeMartin Stadium with a 9-0-2 record. The nine wins were the most-ever at home. Freshman Giuseppe Barone captured Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors, while sophomore Ryan Sierakowski earned first-team All-Big Ten honors. Juniors Jimmy Fiscus and Ken Krolicki joined redshirt-soph-omore Jimmy Hague as second-team All-B1G honorees. Sierakows-ki, Hague, Fiscus and Krolicki all earned All-Region honors as well.

The Spartans ended the 2014 season with a 12-5-6 record overall and were 4-2-2 in Big Ten action. The 2013 season also saw Rensing named the NSCAA Regional Coach of the Year, while Kevin Cope earned All-America honors and was eventually selected as the 25th pick in the MLS Super Draft. Fatai Alashe was selected as the fourth pick overall by the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2015 MLS Super-Draft. His selection in the first round of the draft marks the highest-ever in school history, surpassing first-round pick Doug DeMartin in 2009.

In 2012, he guided MSU to its third Big Ten Tournament title in school history as the Spartans topped Michigan in overtime, 2-1. Rensing began his coaching career in 1997 when he assisted with the MSU women’s soccer team before moving to UNLV when for-mer MSU women’s assistant Staci Hendershott was appointed head coach of that program. After one year at UNLV, Rensing returned to East Lansing in 1999 where he became an assistant coach on Baum’s staff.

Rensing earned his bachelor’s degree from MSU in communication in 1997. He married the former Daune Koester in May 2004. The couple has two children, Anna and Drew.
