‘Out of This World’ Activities Encourage Children’s Summer Reading in Hamden
This year Hamden Public Libraries’ summer reading program, designed to serve as a means for maintaining children’s reading skills during the long summer hiatus from their classrooms, ex-plores the reaches of space with its S.T.E.M.-based theme, “Universe of Stories”.
Beginning June 12 children may register to
participate in the summer-long program at any of
the three Hamden Public Library locations or on
the library’s website www.hamdenlibrary.org.
Reading progress can be tracked on our special
reading logs or online. Not-yet-readers can log
time they are read to. Prizes and raffle tickets are
awarded as reading goals are accomplished. Stu-
dents who choose to keep reading can come to the
library for a special second tracker sheet and earn
more chances to enter the raffle. Raffle winners
will be announced on August 15th at the summer
reading finale.
During the summer months the library will
offer a variety of fun and educational programs
including Connecticut Water Authority’s Bubble Pro-
gram, Rocket Science with Jane Copes and the return
of the Llama in the Library at Miller Library, The Se-
cret Lives of Owls and the CT Water Authority’s
Slime Program at Brundage Community Branch and
Science Outside the Box and Alien Cartooning at
Whitneyville Branch. (A complete program list is in-
cluded in this newsletter.)
All programs are free and open to all, but registra-
tion is required. Register online at hamdenlibrary.org
or call the appropriate branch for the programs in
which you wish to participate.

Interlibrary Loan Service: The Basics Hamden Public Libraries are always striving to obtain
books and other materials that meet the diverse needs of
our clientele. And yet, there will always be some materi-
als our patrons would like to read or hear that we do not
own. This is where interlibrary loan (I.L.L.) comes into
play.
Many patrons make good use of our I.L.L service. Last
year we borrowed 1,973 items on behalf of our patrons
and loaned 1,447 items to other libraries. However, I’m
certain there are those who are unaware that they have
the ability to access materials fro other Connecticut and
out-of-state libraries.
Here are a few basics for those new to I.L.L.First, I.L.L.
services are free. Requests can be made in person, by
phone at 287-2680 or through our website at www.ham-
denlibrary.org. Second, they are only provided by your
hometown library. Hamden Public Libraries do I.L.L. re-
quests for Hamden residents only. Finally, music cassettes
and CDs and videocassettes and DVDs cannot be borrowed
through I.L.L.
