Bariatric Center Services Include: 1. Dedicated and specially- trained bariatric surgery healthcare team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and technicians 2. Patient navigator to guide patients and families through the weight-management process 3. Counseling provided by a trained nutritionist 4. An exercise routine and goals specific to patients’ unique lifestyles created by a physical therapist Surgery Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass are the two surgeries most commonly performed nowadays. Both procedures are done with a minimally invasive approach that minimizes postoperative pain and allows for a prompt recovery. The size of the stomach is reduced and patients feel full sooner with less food, so they eat less. In the case of gastric bypass surgery, the now-reduced stomach is reconnected to the small bowel. In the case of both surgeries, patients consume less calories and fat. “The best candidates for this type of surgery are patients who are severely obese and have unsuccessfully tried other weight loss methods without any long-term success,” says Dr. Macias, who specializes in minimally invasive surgical procedures including weight loss procedures as well as surgery to treat gastroesophageal reflux. With minimally invasive surgery, the surgeon makes four to six small incisions, rather than one large incision. Having bariatric surgery is a process, he explains. Before undergoing surgery, patients receive nutritional and psychological counseling. Saint Peter’s offers one-on-one counseling for patients before and after bariatric surgery. During the initial sessions, the nutritionist discusses diet, health conditions, current medications and past attempts to lose weight. Patients also receive information about nutrition following surgery. Throughout the process patients are strongly encouraged to attend free bariatric support group meetings. Two separate groups meet the second Thursday of every month; discussions are led in English and Spanish. People who have a body mass index of more than 35 are considered obese and are at a greater risk of either developing chronic disease, or if they are already suffering from a chronic condition such as diabetes, worsening their health to the point of being at risk for early death. Bariatric surgery, also referred to as weight loss surgery, is an option for individuals who find themselves living with the complications of obesity. The team at The Bariatric Center at Saint Peter’s University Hospital has developed a comprehensive weight loss program that includes nutritional counseling by a registered dietitian, behavioral coaching with a psychologist, and a fitness program developed by a physical therapist, in addition to surgery. “The multidisciplinary team at Saint Peter’s University Hospital provides all the tools needed in order to succeed in the patient’s quest for a new, healthy lifestyle,” says C. Aitor Macias, surgical director of The Bariatric Center at Saint Peter’s.
